With sexual dysfunction becoming a new topic to explore in the study; race relations leading to Robert to return; and us meeting Francis, a lot happens in this episode.
Amari-Sali1 September 2014
Warning: Spoilers
I feel like as much as the time jump can be justified, it is going to take a few episodes to get used to. If just because some characters have changed for the better; others oddly have stayed the same; and then you have the issue of who got to stay post-time jump and who gets to stick around. Like, for example, I am unsure why, of all people. Dr. Langham is still around and Scully has vanished. Also, considering all the years which have gone by (only two+), why is Virginia just now going back to school? You'd think, to honor Dr. DePaul, she would have been gone back to school for her doctorate. Add in Flo, the diet pill pusher; Robert still being around, but not Coral; and you are left with the feeling that maybe you can adjust, but at the same time you sort of feel that this time leap could have been executed better.

Topic 1: The Veil Profit Ball – Libby & Bill

The IRS is ready to audit Bill's practice and despite Betty's warnings, he has been dragging his feet on becoming some sort of non-profit. But with this Veil Profit Ball, and a dinner with the chief of police, he thinks he can convince the chief to join his board of trustees. Thing is, as has long been established, Bill isn't a people person so Betty has Virginia join their little dinner. Something which you can see, in a low key way, Libby is growing tired of. For while she seems to not mind Virginia being around, a part of me thinks she is slowly growing used to the idea of Bill maybe having a mistress, or a work wife if you want to use a euphemism.

This doesn't mean she isn't jealous though. For with Virginia having a place in Bill's life, in an active role, and Libby still in a position hoping Bill's decisions don't leave her homeless, she decides to try to help get the chief of police on the board by helping his wife with this Veil Profit Ball by getting donations. Something which she seems rather good at for she gets $300 in donations. So her being good at fund raising, using her sugar sweet southern charm, seems to be a talent. One which Bill sort of praises.

Topic 2: Dr. Virginia Johnson – Virginia and Barbara

Despite Betty finding a way to get her CPA in accounting, and Virginia surely getting paid enough for a quality baby sitter, it seems she during the time jump, and up until now, remained just Bill's assistant on the study. Something strange to me since she seemed so gung ho about getting her degree back in the day. Plus, considering how with Betty helping she could have easily taken one or two classes while her kids were in school, and still helped Bill, it is odd that it took Barbara coming in to make her realize she needs to go back to school. Especially since you'd think after Dr. DePaul's comment, when she gave the Pap Smear away, that would have jump started Virginia into refocusing on school.

But, alas, instead the reintroduction of Barbara has Virginia reconsidering going to school. For psychology at that. For, you see, with a third of patients being rejected for the sex study due to impotence, it creates an idea in Virginia's mind about how to help these people like Barbara, or those who can't get it up, keep it up, and climax too quickly. And with Betty sharing some of her expertise from her former line of work, it inspires Virginia, along with bringing up Barbara's repressed memories, to really look into the psychological part of sex and not just focus on the physical.

Topic 3: A Ghost from the Past – Bill and Francis

When it comes to Bill's close relationships, and past, we largely know nothing. His relationship with his mom is strained, and he was abused while she was around, we know that; Scully was the ideal father figure to him, and made for a good mentor, we know that; Libby he likely married only to move up in his work place, that's obvious; and he is in love with Virginia, but likely doesn't want to divorce Libby since that wasn't socially acceptable at the time.

Leading to the question of who is this guy Francis? Someone who seems to have known Bill in college; had a close relationship with him, almost hinting they may have been lovers; and yet now there is this weird distance which seems to have come from Bill abandoning him. Making it seem Betty isn't the only one with someone waiting in her closet. But the truth is though, it seems Francis maybe Bill's brother from one of his dad's affairs. A kid who didn't get as much time with Bill's dad, and perhaps resented Bill for it. However, once he got to know his big brother he grew attached and Bill eventually cut him off. Why? One could only assume triggering memories. But with Francis trying to have a child, and being quite adamant on Bill being his doctor and them having some sort of relationship, it seems he is here to stay. Making me hope Bill's mom comes around just to see her interact with Francis.
