Robert Rodriguez’s nonsensical yet charmingly unpretentious film about the power of hypnosis makes for a fast-paced pre-summer throwback
Before the inevitable bloat of summer lands with exhaustingly overextended runtimes and confusingly interconnected universes, there’s some unpretentious fun to be had with Robert Rodriguez’s daft and brief little B-movie Hypnotic, written in 2002 and made as if it was shot soon after. It’s such a curiously dated thriller, from the score to the direction to the casting to the overall vibe, that at times it feels like Rodriguez is in full pastiche mode, as if this was a Far From Heaven-level homage deliberately designed to recall a very specific moment in cinema history.
Maybe he’s trying to feed into our collective desire to see mid-budget genre films that look like real films again, rather than whatever washed-out pieces of content Netflix dumps on our smartphones, and whether intentional or not,...

In the emotionally charged, wild and humorous world of sixteen year old James Whitman, we see his struggle to overcome anxiety and depression by seeking advice from Dr. Bird - an imaginary pigeon therapist - in the wake of his sister's disappearance. Based on the book by Evan Roskos. This indie film stars Lucas Jade Zumann as James Whitman, with Taylor Russell, David Arquette, Jason Isaacs, Chase Stokes, Tom Wilkinson, and Michael Cole as Walt Whitman. This looks like it has some really creative filmmaking throughout, drifting into the fantasy realm to tell this story of loss and love. It's a really lovely, amusing trailer,...

Comedy legend John Cleese has signed on to star in The Great Emu War, an Australian-set action-adventure comedy inspired by ridiculous true events in the outback in the 1930s.
Aussie comedians Monty Franklin and Jim Jefferies and New Zealand funnyman Rhys Darby (What We Do in the Shadows, Flight of the Conchords) are also attached to the film, which Franklin wrote, inspired by real events in Western Australia in 1932 when the Australian army declared war on the country’s wild emu population. And lost.
