- "Nashville" - "I'm Tired of Pretending" - Dec. 4, 2013
Layla has been overstaying her set and Juliette is enraged. Glenn says he'll take care of it but Juliette takes matters into her own hands-- at the goading of Charlie Wentworth-- and she retaliates by flip-flopping Will and Layla's sets, meaning Layla gets a shorter set. Layla tries to apologize but Juliette isn't having it.
Charlie returns to declare his undying love for Juliette and she tells him she doesn't believe him. He continues to pursue her and has her tune into "Extra" where they announce that Charlie and Olivia are getting divorced. She is surprised. He then shows up at her next gig and she again begs off saying she doesn't want to be known as a home-wrecker. He tells her how special she is and she says she likes the way she sees him. But Glenn thinks Charlie brings out the worst in her since he's the one that gets her to sink Layla.
Charlie comes to see Juliette and once and for all, she tells him, as tenderly as possible that he needs to get back with Olivia.
Maddie has asked Deacon to give her guitar lessons which ruffles Teddy's feathers but they acquiesce. They talk about playing and she asks why he never made another record he says it just never panned out after he started working with Rayna but he reports that he is playing a little set at the music festival that Teddy is putting on.
But when Maddie signs up for an open mic for kids and Teddy, Peggy, Rayna, and Deacon all show up to support her she asks Deacon to come sing with her and Teddy blows a gasket and confronts Deacon on the street and tells him not to try to muscle in as father. Deacon says it was Teddy who told him to man up and be responsible and he was just doing what Maddie asked of him and it was a surprise to them all. Maddie comes out and sees this and stalks off. Teddy finally comes clean with Peggy that Deacon is Maddie's biological father. He then also kicks Deacon off the Music City Music Festival bill.
Deacon rants to his girlfriend that he has rights too and, as a lawyer, she agrees but asks if he's ready to take on being a parent.
Maddie goes to Rayna sad about how the day turned out and how both men are upset when she is with one or the other. She wonders if she shouldn't see either of them anymore. Rayna says that would be a shame and they both love her. Maddie says if they loved her they wouldn't act that way. She says it doesn't feel that way.
Rayna goes to Teddy and Deacon to talk about Maddie. She talks about being estranged from Lamar and how much of a loss that was and she won't let that happen to Maddie. She loves them both and she doesn't want them to give her a reason to shut out the two most important men in her life.
Rayna visits Lamar in prison and he says he needs a character witness at his trial so he can get out of jail and be put on house arrest instead and asks her to reach out to Tandy because he hasn't been able to get in touch with her. Rayna does and Tandy is noncommittal about going. She goes to see the U.S. attorney who counsels her against doing it. Instead Rayna takes the stand to testify that he is not a flight risk but this is not enough for the judge who sends him back to jail.
Rayna asks Tandy what happened. Tandy says she didn't know their dad as well as she thought and she needs to keep her distance for awhile. In prison, Lamar tells his lawyer that Tandy will regret this betrayal of not showing up and that she has some skeletons he's willing to expose.
Over on the Luke Wheeler tour, Will has a little too much fun at the after party and ends up diving off a bar at an after party and no one catches him but the floor. Much to Layla's dismay since he is her "boyfriend" and they were supposed to be doing early morning interviews. Brent arrives the next day after Will is checked out by a doctor and tells him that after this and the report of him getting in a fight in Houston Brent is going to be his babysitter. Brent says he's just doing his job, Will asks if he's sure about that. Brent tells him to fix things with Layla. He does, he gives her flowers, apologizes about the night before and says he's sorry their sets got flipped. She asks him to duet with her in his set as a way to make it up to her. But when Juliette gets wind of that she sinks that too by taking her spot in the duet. Will and Juliette comisserate at the bar and he admits that he's dating her as a means to an end and one day he'll find someone who makes him feel like the best version of himself. This brings Glen's words about Charlie back to Juliette who calls Avery on the way home and reaches out to hang out as a friend. Meanwhile, Layla is being the worst version of herself: Layla retaliates by calling TMZ and tipping them that it was Juliette that broke up Charlie and Olivia Wentworth's marriage.
Scarlett is feeling lonely so she calls Avery and he says he will kidnap Zoe and they will come visit her in St. Louis. But when they arrive and Scarlett sees how the three of them have become friends she feels like she's on the outside of that too. Avery tries to comfort her as does Zoe and she seems to feel a bit better. Zoe and Gunnar decide they have to tell Scarlett but before they are able to Scarlett walks out into the hotel hallway as they're leaving and finds Gunnar and Zoe kissing and is gobsmacked. She glares at them and walks off.
