- Death changes lives forever as a mystery arises; Scarlett and Gunnar receive an offer from Kelly Clarkson; a video adversely affects Juliette's reputation; Rayna is under intense pressure to succeed.
- Juliette practises 'Dreams' on stage, the song she wrote with Avery. We see Peggy's body being taken away by the coroner whilst Rayna and the girls comfort Teddy. At the end of Juliette's song, Glenn and Avery applaud and Avery compliments her on how beautiful it sounds. She seems embarrassed after what happened at Avery's hotel room with Scarlett.
Rayna and the girls watch Teddy on television. He's holding a press conference to confirm what happened to Peggy. He explains that she was accidentally shot by a man who was trying to target him instead. The man in question was found dead by the police of an apparent suicide. Maddie asks Rayna if that means that it's all over and nobody is trying to hurt Teddy anymore. Rayna says that's exactly what it means - although she doesn't look so sure. Teddy tells the press that the man who shot Peggy was made redundant prior to the incident and blamed Teddy for his unemployment. He tries to hold it together as he looks down at his wedding ring on his left hand.
Avery finds Juliette talking to her band members. He needs to talk to her. He explains that he's left her some voice messages but she says that she's just been busy. Emily, Juliette's assistant turns up after being away for a while because her Aunt wasn't well. The girls hug and look really pleased to see each other. Avery politely excuses himself. Juliette asks Emily if she's up to speed with everything. 'The new head of Edgehill is an ass, you have a 19 year old twit opening up for you and everybody thinks you broke up the world's most beloved couple.' The girls laugh at how ridiculous it all sounds. 'Welcome back to my life.' Juliette says.
Layla and Brent are waiting for Will at a radio station. Will is late and Layla and Brent are confused at his absence as this is really unlike him. Layla says the last time she spoke to him was before her set at the festival. It suddenly clicks in Brent's mind that Will must have quickly taken off after they slept together. He looks worried. The radio DJ signals that he is ready for the interview. Brent says that Layla will just have to talk for Will as well.
Deacon speaks with his friend, Joey, about his music. Joey loves the idea of starting up a solo career for Deacon. However, Joey isn't really impressed with the songs that Deacon has been writing on his own. He asks him to tap into the magic that Deacon had when he wrote with Rayna. Joey says that his partner will be in town soon and asks Deacon to come up with something really great for him to hear. 'You bet.' Says Deacon.
Brent shows up at Gunnar's place and asks if either Gunnar or Zoey have seen Will. Brent explains that the Luke Wheeler tour is on a break and nobody has heard from Will since the festival. Zoey asks if they should call the cops but Brent tries to reassure mostly himself by saying that Will probably just needed to clear his head. He tells Zoey and Gunnar that the tour starts back up again in two days and that if Will isn't there then he will get dropped.
Avery returns home and he apologises to Scarlett for being late. He says that Glenn invited him to hear Juliette sing the song they wrote together. He says that it sounded pretty great. Scarlett asks if that's the reason why Juliette knocked on Avery's hotel door at two in the morning the other week - to tell him that she was going to sing their song. Avery looks panicked and says that it was and then says that he doesn't know why celebrities do the things that they do. Scarlett doesn't look so convinced. She gets a call from her publisher. They tell her that Kelly Clarkson wants to record 'Fade Into You.' A song that Scarlett and Gunnar wrote together.
Rayna and Bucky talk about Highway 65. They have started up on a website and the tabloids are printing columns about it. Although Edgehill are trying to make it sound like they got rid of Rayna. Rayna says that she's going to meet with Liam that afternoon to start sequencing the album and to choose a single and a release date. Bucky suggests looking into some market research to see which song will really pop as a single. Rayna says that she's already looked at the research that Jeff gave to her and that she'll be damned if she lets Edgehill have any say or influence on how she goes about creating her album for Highway 65.
Juliette and Emily leave the venue of Juliette's stage only to be bombarded by more paparazzi and members of the public screaming abuse at her. She doesn't seem too phased by it today as she gets into her car and tells Emily that they are just exercising their human rights. 'And here is mine' she says before giving them all the finger out of her car window.
Zoey and Gunnar search Will's place for any clues as to where he may have gone. They find his cowboy hat on the bed and Gunnar says that Will was probably in a bad place when he left because it's bad luck to leave a hat on a bed. They look at his search history on his computer and find a place called Echo Ridge.
Liam surprises Rayna and he flirts with her and begins kissing her neck. She politely pushes him away and says that she's kind of seeing somebody. She says that it's Luke Wheeler and Liam says that now he understands the miserable look that Luke gave him when he walked by to meet her. Rayna shows Liam the market research from Edgehill and he urges her to burn it because the music is more important than the numbers.
Deacon struggles to write a song for Joey and his partner. Megan comes home and says that she doesn't want to distract him. 'Its a little late for that' says Deacon. They kiss.
Teddy is looking at Peggy's wedding dress. The girls show up and comfort him. 'She was nice' says Maddie.
Gunnar drives through Echo Ridge and finds Will's motorcycle.
Juliette shows up at her stage venue and is once again heckled by the public, who hold bibles and chant hateful jingles towards her. Juliette spots Layla giving an autograph to one of Juliette's haters and she isn't happy. She storms up to Layla and Layla immediately begins to walk away. One particular man shouts abuse about Juliette's mother. Juliette turns to the man as he says that her mother is in Hell because God punishes the wicked. She walks right up to the man, with Layla and Glenn quick in pursuit and says 'There is no God that would listen to a crackpot like you.' Glenn quickly pulls her away and tells her not to react to these people.
Gunnar finally finds Will sitting on a bank in Echo Ridge. He asks him what he thinks he's doing. Will looks to be in a bad way. He looks dirty and he's crying. Will tells Gunnar to stay away. 'I'm disgusting!' Will screams before running away.
Scarlett shows up at Gunnar's place looking for him. Zoey answers and says that he's not there. Scarlett asks her if she can get Gunnar to return her calls and Zoey says that she will. Scarlett turns away and Zoey asks if she wants to come in and talk. 'No, thanks' Scarlett says. Zoey then begins to tell her how she's sick of feeling guilty. And that she fell for Gunnar for the same reasons that Scarlett did and if she can't understand that, then there isn't any more that she can do. Scarlett walks away.
Juliette and Emily drink champagne at Juliette's home and toast Emily's return. Emily's phone buzzes and she picks it up and says that she has set up her phone to notify her when anything new about Juliette appears online. She looks distraught at she plays a video of Juliette earlier that day reacting to the man who bad mouthed Juliette's mother. The video shows Juliette simply saying 'There is no God.' Somebody has tampered with the video to make her look bad. Emily says that she will call Juliette's lawyer and Glenn to tell them that the video has been tampered with. Juliette looks horrified.
Rayna and Bucky listen to The Cadillac Three' - a band that Rayna is thinking about signing to Highway 65. The band are really good and Rayna loves them. She says that she'll get back to them. Bucky looks at his phone and says that the duet that she did with Luke has just hit number six on iTunes and is still climbing. Rayna is pleased because if the duet does well then it will help her sell her album. Bucky asks if 'Better Days' is the song that Rayna wants to use for her single. She says that according to the Edgehill market research, there isn't a song on the album that would do well as a single. Bucky asks if she has spoken to Liam about it and she says that she has but now that Highway 65 is her own label, she has to take the market research seriously.
Gunnar sits in the dark, where Will ran away from him. He has made a fire and Will returns. Gunnar guesses that Will's sudden disappearance had something to do with Brent. He tries to comfort him but Will says that he wanted to die and the only reason he came to Echo Ridge was because he didn't have the courage to do it. He tells Gunnar that he was standing on the train tracks and Gunnar is furious. He pushes Will to the ground and tells him that there are other ways to get through things. Both boys calm down and Gunnar makes Will promise that he will call if things ever get messy again.
Deacon continues to struggle with his song writing. Megan brings a snack over to him and Deacon shrugs her off, coldly. They argue because Deacon is frustrated and blames Megan for distracting him. She grabs her coat and says that she won't be a distraction anymore.
Gunnar and Will continue to talk by the camp fire. Gunnar tells Will that it's the 21st century and that it's okay to be whatever he wants to be. Will says that it won't be acceptable if he continues to do what he does for a living. Will also reassures Gunnar that he won't try to hurt himself again. He tells Gunnar to go on home so that they can both get some sleep.
Teddy arranges a meeting with the detective in charge of Peggy's murder case. The detective is alarmed to see that Teddy has been reading through the case files and strongly recommends that he doesn't look at it all. Teddy tells the detective that he's only been the mayor for less than a year and the man who shot Peggy lost his job five years ago. He says that it doesn't make sense and that he's worried that this isn't over. The detective offers Teddy some form of security. Teddy says that it's not himself that he's worried about.
In Pittsburgh, Juliette is out in public and a bystander throws black paint all over her. Everybody cheers. Glenn ushers Juliette away.
The next morning in Echo Ridge, Gunnar stands on his truck to find some cell phone reception. He receives numerous texts from Scarlett, saying that Kelly Clarkson wants to record their song. Will shows up and Gunnar says that he slept in the truck. Will looks happier and Gunnar tells him about the news. Will congratulates him and looks genuinely pleased.
Deacon sits in his truck and gets a call from Joey. He says that he expects a brand new song from Deacon in two days to present to his partners. Deacon says that it won't be a problem. It becomes apparent that Deacon is sitting in the car park of a liquor store.
Emily comforts Juliette. Juliette gets a call from Avery but doesn't answer because 'talking gets her into trouble.' Emily says that it's a shame that they don't have a video of the full footage to show everybody the truth. Juliette says that even if she stood on a stage and screamed the truth at the top of her lungs - nobody would believe her. Emily asks if she thinks the public would believe Layla, because she was standing right behind Juliette when the footage was captured on video.
Rayna meets with Teddy and he asks if the girls can stay with her. He explains that the man who tried to kill him, may not have acted alone and that the whole case doesn't add up. The bottom line is, Teddy was the target and he's still alive so he wants to protect the girls. Rayna understands.
Layla sits in Juliette's kitchen as Juliette's asks for a favour. She says that she needs Layla to talk to the press and tell them the truth about what she said. Layla declines at first and says that she's not going to risk her reputation for Juliette. Juliette then says that if all of this controversy doesn't go away, then the tour will. She also says that she'll owe Layla a favour. Layla smiles, looking smug.
Scarlett and Gunnar sing 'Fade Into You' for Kelly Clarkson. Scarlett looks in awe at Gunnar as they sing although he doesn't look too connected to anything but the music. Kelly is really impressed and asks if they could write some more songs for her. Scarlett quickly declines and says that their current situation means that they could never sit and write together. She walks out of the studio.
Will shows up in Pittsburgh and bumps into Layla. She says that she was worried sick and automatically gets defensive and asks Will if he left because of her. He says that it wasn't but that he just needs to focus on his music. He gets into an elevator and leaves Layla with tears in her eyes.
Rayna and Liam talk about her album. She says that she sent Better Days to quite a few people and that the vibe that she got from them, told her that it isn't the single that is going to launch the album. Liam gets angry because she sounds like she's being influenced by the market research and isn't listening to her instincts. Rayna says that she is risking everything that she has on this label and that she has two daughters that she needs to protect too. He softens up and says that she's right.
Scarlett is with Avery, telling him that she can't be around Gunnar without wanting to punch him in the face. Avery looks seriously fed up of hearing about the whole Gunnar and Zoey situation and says that he doesn't understand why she's making such a big deal out of it. He asks if she still has feelings for him and she instantly retaliates by asking if Avery has feelings for Juliette. He says that he doesn't but Scarlett says that you don't just turn up at somebody's door at two in the morning unless something is pulling you there. Avery tries to deny it but Scarlett says that she has seen the way Avery looks at Juliette. She says that they rushed back into their relationship and tried to pick things up where they left off but that it isn't going to work because neither of them are the same. Avery agrees.
Gunnar is back at home, furious that Scarlett blew their chances with Kelly Clarkson over her jealousy. Zoey is shocked that Scarlett would behave in such a way. Zoey says that she should be sorry but she's not, because she's in love with Gunnar. He says that he loves her too. They kiss.
Megan is at Deacon's place and he apologises for being so rude to her. He tells her that the writing isn't going well because all of his number one hits were written when he was in a place of pain. He's finding it so difficult to write a song because he's happy. They hold hands and smile at each other.
Layla faces the press to tell them the truth about what Juliette said. Juliette and Glenn watch nervously from an adjoining room. They fear that Layla will not tell them the whole story. However, she pulls it off flawlessly and tells the press that Juliette said 'There is no God that would listen to a crackpot like you.' Juliette says that she hopes that this will work because if not, then her career will be over.
Rayna returns home to applause from Bucky. Her duet with Liam just hit number one on iTunes. Rayna tells him that she isn't going to use Better Days as the single so this means that she'll need to write a new song. Bucky tells her that she can do it because he remembers a time when Rayna and Deacon used to write future number ones between dessert and coffee.
Brent bumps into Will and Will is totally hostile. Brent tries to calm him down but Will just get angrier. 'Nothing is going to be fine between us, ever again.' He says and storms away.
Maddie is at Deacon's place and they are writing songs together. Rayna shows up with Daphne to pick Maddie up. Maddie asks her mum if she wants to listen to the song that she and Deacon just wrote together. Maddie and Deacon play together and it's beautiful. As they play, we see Scarlett heading back to the tour bus with her suitcase and guitar. Rayna is almost in tears at Deacon and Maddie's song. We see Teddy looking at pictures of Peggy. He cries. Avery leaves Juliette a voicemail and tells her that he's there for her. We see Juliette watching television. The news shows protestors setting fire to her albums. A lone tear runs down her cheek.
