Say what you will about superhero fatigue in recent months, but there's no denying that James Gunn is assembling quite a list of talent for his new DC Universe. Even though he's right in the middle of filming for "Superman", that hasn't stopped him and co-ceo Peter Safran from looking to the future for another superhero movie coming down the pipeline. After news broke earlier this year that "House of the Dragon" star Millie Alcock would be suiting up as Superman's superpowered cousin, the upcoming "Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow" film now has its director. That's maybe not the order of hiring we'd usually expect to see, but welcome to franchise filmmaking, folks!

DC looks to have found its Supergirl director in Craig Gillespie, the man behind the camera for films like Cruella, I, Tonya, and GameStop stock drama Dumb Money. Last year, Gunn remarked that when it comes to Supergirl, “we see the difference between Superman who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he was an infant, versus Supergirl who was raised on a rock, a chip off Krypton, and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life, and...

It’s up, up and away for director Craig Gillespie, who is in talks to helm Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.
The filmmaker joins James Gunn (Superman) and Andy Muschietti (the Batman feature The Brave and the Bold) among the filmmakers building out the slate of projects for DC Studios, the Warner Bros. division led by Gunn and Peter Safran.
With Gillespie, DC gains a tried and true helmer known for putting a grounded yet stylish spin on projects such as Disney’s Cruella, the skating drama I, Tonya and TV’s Pam & Tommy. He was last in theaters with the GameStop movie Dumb Money.
Supergirl stars House of the Dragon‘s Milly Alcock, who will play Kara Zor-El, the cousin of Superman. The feature is inspired by the Tom King and Bilquis Evely comic and will depart from the earnest take on the character audiences may know from the CW Supergirl series.

Thompson and Stone both had more than a good time doing Cruella. The feature saw Thompson’s ambitious fashion designer, Baroness von Hellman, taking Stone’s Cruella under her wing. The two characters would soon engage in a heated rivalry, both trying to come out on top in the fashion world.
Because of their fierce competition, Thompson’s Baroness spent much of the film being cruel to Stone. But Thompson asserted there were no hard feelings had between the actual actors. Thompson even had a good time playing nasty for a change.

Disney+ is officially in its Taylor Swift era.
With the launch of “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour (Taylor’s Version)” on Disney+ on March 14 at 6 p.m. Pt, the megastar is getting a homepage takeover on the streamer. For one day only, the service’s main screen will feature nine curated sets of titles inspired by each of the singer’s eras — including “Fearless” (e.g. “Moana”), “1989” (e.g. “The Little Mermaid”) and “Midnights” (e.g. “Cinderella”).
The Swift takeover of the Disney+ homepage will be worldwide with a few exceptions, including Turkey, where the film will not be available until April 3.
Disney reportedly paid more than $75 million for worldwide streaming rights to “The Eras Tour” concert film, which Swift’s company produced. The newly expanded version of “The Eras Tour” on Disney+ — clocking in at three and a half hours — includes five bonus songs: “Cardigan,” from “Folklore,” plus four...

Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things is nominated for eleven Oscars, including best picture, lead actress and director. The Oscar nominated genre comedy arrives on Hulu today, ahead of the Academy Awards this weekend.
This year’s Oscars ceremony airs on Sunday, March 10.
At the box office, the awards recognition and positive word of mouth drove Poor Things to an incredible $100 million worldwide, a huge success story for arthouse cinema at large.
Emma Stone stars alongside Willem Dafoe in Poor Things from Yorgos Lanthimos (The Killing of a Sacred Deer, Dogtooth), a Frankenstein-like tale based on the 1992 novel by Alasdair Gray. Ramy Youssef, Jerrod Carmichael, Christopher Abbott, and Mark Ruffalo also star.
Lanthimos’ latest tells “the incredible tale and fantastical evolution of Bella Baxter (Stone), a young woman brought back to life by the brilliant and unorthodox scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter (Dafoe). Under Baxter’s protection, Bella is eager to learn.

The films up for the 2024 Best Makeup and Hairstyling Oscar are “Golda,” “Maestro,” “Oppenheimer,” “Poor Things,” and “Society of the Snow.” Our current odds show that “Maestro” (10/3) is favored to win, followed in order by “Poor Things” (71/20), “Oppenheimer” (9/2), “Society of the Snow” (9/2), and “Golda” (9/2).
This lineup is the category’s second in a row to include a 54% first-timer majority, thus constituting a new trend after 70% remained the norm for the preceding half decade. The present rookie subset consists of “Golda” trio Suzi Battersby, Karen Hartley Thomas, and Ashra Kelly-Blue as well as one artist from each other film: Luisa Abel (“Oppenheimer”), Ana López-Puigcerver (“Society of the Snow”), Lori McCoy-Bell (“Maestro”), and Josh Weston (“Poor Things”).
McCoy-Bell and Weston share their respective nominations with Kazu Hiro and Mark Coulier, each of whom succeeded on two of his previous four outings. While Coulier won for “The Iron Lady” (2012) and “The Grand Budapest Hotel...

The films in contention for the 2024 Best Costume Design Oscar are “Barbie,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Napoleon,” “Oppenheimer,” and “Poor Things.” Our current odds posit “Barbie” (10/3) as the frontrunner, followed in order by “Poor Things” (7/2), “Killers of the Flower Moon” (9/2), “Oppenheimer” (9/2), and “Napoleon” (9/2).
Since she was previously feted for “Anna Karenina” (2013) and “Little Women” (2020), Jacqueline Durran’s ninth career nomination for “Barbie” could make her the dozenth costumer with three or more wins. As is the case this time, her 2020 bid resulted from a collaboration with director Greta Gerwig, while her 2013 one was her third of five for a Joe Wright film, after “Pride & Prejudice” (2006) and “Atonement” (2008) and before “Darkest Hour” (2018) and “Cyrano” (2022). Her remaining two bids came for “Mr. Turner” (2015) and “Beauty and the Beast” (2018).

Emma Stone feared that she would "fail" Bella Baxter as a character in 'Poor Things'.The 35-year-old star plays the lead role in the acclaimed Yorgos Lanthimos film about a woman who goes on a journey of self-discovery after being brought to life and admits that she initially doubted that she would be able to live up to the part.Speaking to Variety magazine, Emma said: "I think because I had lived with her in my mind for so long and I was so deeply in love with Bella, it terrified me not to live up to her as a character. I felt like I was failing her in the first week, and failing Yorgos. It was just difficult."The 'Cruella' star – who was honoured with the Best Actress in a Leading Role gong for her portrayal of Bella Baxter at the BAFTA Film Awards last weekend – revealed...

“Peoor Things” got a big boost in its Oscar bid for Best Costume Design with a win for period pictures at the Costume Designers Guild Awards on Feb. 21. It prevailed over three of its Oscar rivals, “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Napoleon” and “Oppenheimer” plus “Maestro.”
The fifth Oscar nominee, “Barbie,” won the fantasy/sci-fi race. The other CDG winner was the contemporary film “Saltburn”
In its 25-year history, the CDG has previewed only 12 of the Oscar winners for Best Costume Design: nine of these have been period pictures and three have been sci-fi or fantasy flicks. Of the last six Costume Designers Guild Awards winners three have gone on to repeat at the Academy Awards: “Cruella” in 2022, “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” in 2021 and “Black Panther” in 2019.
Last year, “Everything Everywhere All at Once” pulled off an upset in the fantasy/sci-fi race over eventual Oscar champ “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

“Maestro” did well at the Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild on Feb. 18 winning two of its three bids. It claimed the prizes for both period/character makeup and special effects races but lost period/character hairstyling to “Barbie,” which was snubbed by the Oscars. Likewise for “Saltburn,” which won both contemporary makeup and hairstyling.
Of this year’s other Oscar nominees, “Poor Things” lost all three of its bids just hours after pulling off an upset at the BAFTAs, “Golda” and “Oppenheimer” were each defeated in a single race while “Society of the Snow” was snubbed by the guild.
These wins boost the odds for “Maestro” to prevail at the Academy Awards. In the decade-long history of these guild honors, there has been just one year when an Muahs winner did not go on to claim the Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling.

“Poor Things” has performed well throughout this awards season, winning Best Comedy/Musical Film at the Golden Globes and snagging 11 Oscar nominations in total. That is the same number of awards the Searchlight Pictures movie was nominated for at the BAFTAs, where we predict it to perform well.
One person who is set to have a good night at the British film awards is Tony McNamara, who adapted Alasdair Gray‘s 1992 novel of the same name. McNamara previously worked with Emma Stone on “Cruella” and “The Favourite,” the latter of which was another Yorgos Lanthimos film. McNamara co-wrote that period piece with Deborah Davis. The duo was nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay at the Oscars in 2019 but lost to “Green Book”.

Kathryn Newton channeled her inner “Lisa Frankenstein” for a special screening of the film at the Hollywood Athletic Club, donning a dramatic black corseted Vera Wang gown with exaggerated tulle hips.
“There was no other dress option. I have a little heart I took from my last boyfriend,” Newton told Variety on the black carpet, pointing to her blood-red heart-shaped choker and giggling, “Just kidding – I don’t have a boyfriend!”
In the film from Zelda Williams, Newton’s Lisa and a re-animated corpse dubbed “The Creature” (Cole Sprouse) embark on a murderous journey to make him whole by claiming some of his missing body parts from the living. Even though Sprouse doesn’t speak a single word in Diablo Cody’s campy script, communicating only through grunts, Newton says they had no trouble selling their chemistry.
“Have you looked at Cole Sprouse? It’s very easy to have chemistry.

Do movie stars exist anymore? The consensus seems to be no. Or, at the very least, new ones aren’t being created past the generation of roughly Leonardo DiCaprio. Which is a shame, because if movie stars were still allowed to thrive in Hollywood now, Emma Stone would certainly be one of them.
After several supporting roles in films like “Superbad” and “Zombieland,” Stone practically burst onto the scene in “Easy A,” her first leading role. As the sharp-tongued but likable teen protagonist in Will Gluck’s comedy, Stone defined her star image immediately: an everywoman appeal mixed with pure charisma, a playfully snarky disposition, and a genuine talent at comedy that makes her pop off the screen. From that film and her Golden Globes nomination, the then 22-year old Stone quickly moved from the teen comedy world into broader pastures, though the projects she chose didn’t always match her potential.

“The joy is working on the films in the first place,” says “Poor Things” hair, makeup and prosthetics designer Nadia Stacey. “You get to see them and go, ‘I can’t believe my name is on that.’ To start getting all this recognition for it as well is just amazing.” It isn’t the first time she’s teamed up with director Yorgos Lanthimos and actress Emma Stone. Emma Stone tells Variety that shooting for Disney’s “Cruella” sequel will begin “Hopefully sooner rather than later.”
Stone, who plays the titular anti-hero Cruella de Vil in the 2021 live action prequel to “101 Dalmatians,” added that the follow up film is “a work in progress.”
Stone continued to offer updates on the anticipated sequel on the red carpet for the Palm Springs International Film Festival on Thursday night. When asked about revisiting the iconic antagonist, she said, “It’s a blast. She’s a blast. So yeah, we’ll see. It’s a work in progress.”
The first “Cruella” was a box office success, amassing more than $220 million at the global box office. News of a developing sequel broke only weeks after the film’s release in theaters. Stone was confirmed to return to the franchise in August 2021. Director Craig Gillespie and screenwriter Tony McNamara are also expected to return.

Three of our five predicted nominees for Best Costume Design at the 2024 Oscars reaped bids on January 4 for the Costume Designers Guild Awards.
“Killers of the Flower Moon” and “Poor Things”contend here in the period picture category against “Maestro,” “Napoleon” and “Oppenheimer.”
The Oscar frontrunner, “Barbie” vies here in the sci-fi/fantasy race against “Haunted Mansion,” “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes,” “The Little Mermaid” and “Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire.”
‘The contemporary costume contenders are “American Fiction,” “May December,” “Nyad,” “Renfield” and “Saltburn.”
Our two other predicted Oscar nominees — “The Color Purple” and “Wonka” — can take heart that the guild often overlook films that go on to contend at the Academy Awards. Indeed the 2020 Oscar winner for Best Costume Design, “Little Women,” was snubbed by the CDG as were two of the other nominees, “The Irishman” and “Joker.” The guild honored...

Emma Stone has always been known for her unique voice, but the Easy A star once sounded even deeper than she does now. So much so that she needed professional help to change it.
Emma Stone revealed where her raspy voice came from Emma Stone | Karwai Tang/WireImage
Stone confided that there was a simple explanation behind her deep voice. It all came down to the actor crying excessively back when she was still a baby.
“My mom dealt with a screaming baby 24 hours a day for the first six months of my life – I screamed myself hoarse every day and developed nodules as an infant,” Stone once said at a press conference according to Your Next Shoes. “So I have calluses on my vocal cords, which makes me lose my voice all the time and makes doing something like screaming in a scene, over and over, really rough, because...

Unlike the theater, movies don't typically have a long rehearsal process before shooting, but the wildly weird Yorgos Lanthimos likes to create the feeling of a theater troupe in his casts. Lanthimos is known for his unconventional style, and his process is no exception. His thespian approach helps his actors get comfortable with one another and adapt to the director's strange style in a way that they would not have time to do on a typical film set. But what exactly goes on at a rehearsal for movies like his latest triumph, "Poor Things?"
Emma Stone stars in the 2023 adaptation as a mad scientist's experiment who breaks free of men who seek to control her and also explores her newfound sexuality. The "La La Land" actor was also in Lanthimos' last film, his 2019 period drama "The Favourite." Despite Stone's reputation, she too is at "The Lobster" director's mercy during rehearsal.

After :a[Free Guy]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/reviews/free-guy/' }, :a[The Adam Project]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/reviews/the-adam-project/' } and the recently resumed Deadpool 3, you might think that director Shawn Levy and star Ryan Reynolds would want to spend time with other people. But their respective families will have to make further accommodation as they're teaming back up for a new project –– albeit one that will wait awhile and that Reynolds is currently only attached to produce, but may step in front of the camera for if the script works out.
As to that screenplay? It's largely a mystery, but one that Deadline has heard is high-concept, global heist caper. You know, a bit like that other one Reynolds is already involved in,:a[Red Notice]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/reviews/red-notice/' }.
