Like so many of the comic-book supervillains that populate it, writer-director Vera Drew’s The People’s Joker arrives with an origin story. An “autobiographical transgender coming-of-age story,” the film stars Drew herself as Joker the Harlequin, an aspiring trans comedian who moves to a dystopic Gotham City and finds herself navigating both her own transition and the world of illicit underground comedy. The characters and settings are largely parodies drawn from DC Comics, but Warner Bros. wasn’t in on the joke, and after the film’s premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival back in 2022, the studio sent Drew a letter threatening legal action, and all future screenings were canceled.
After a long period of further delays and secret screenings of the film as Drew sought to make sure that she was fully protected from legal action under fair use has allowed for a fully legal release—complete...

Typically, saying you're more excited about something other than the new Lady Gaga project is fair grounds for having your queer card taken away, but an exception can be made in the case of "The People's Joker." Indeed, as intrigued as I am to watch Gaga's Harley Quinn sing and dance her way through a toxic romance with Joaquin Phoenix's Clown Prince of Crime in Todd Phillips' "Joker: Folie à Deux" (a sentence I couldn't have imagined writing after watching Phillips' original Scorsesean DC drama for the first time back in 2019), it's Vera Drew's trans-coming-of-age DC Comics superhero parody that has my current attention.
Drew, similar to her fellow trans comedienne Harper Steele (the subject of Will Ferrell's acclaimed upcoming Netflix documentary "Will & Harper"), has quietly worked on some of the more memorable and daring comedic offerings of the past decade. In addition to editing Scott Aukerman...

The People’s Joker, Vera Drew’s debut feature about a trans woman working in a comedy set in the Batman universe, has been pulled from the Toronto International Film Festival for further screenings after its world premiere.
“The filmmaker has withdrawn this film due to rights issues. We apologize for any inconvenience. Current ticket holders will receive an email from TIFF customer relations with information on their purchase,” TIFF said on its website for The People’s Joker on Wednesday ahead of another screening at Scotiabank Theatre tonight that is now not going ahead.
Festival organizers confirmed the withdrawal of the queer coming-of-age tale from its additional play at TIFF. The filmmakers behind the movie, including the production banner Haunted Gay Ride Productions, offered no direct comment when The Hollywood Reporter reached out.

The People’s Joker: Comic book satire pulled from TIFF by Warner Bros. due to copyright infringement
In an interesting (although unsurprising) turn of events, a film showcased at only one screening during the Toronto International Film Festival has been pulled Wednesday morning due to rights issues and has had future screenings canceled. The film in question is called The People’s Joker, which uses many references and likenesses to the famous DC villain, The Joker, as well as references and callbacks to past Batman-related movies and properties. The film comes from director, Vera Drew, and is a satire on the comic book character where the Joker’s transformation journey is turned into a transgender journey.
According to That Shelf, the movie was pulled because Warner Bros had apparently served a cease and desist to both TIFF and the filmmakers due to copyright infringement. Few works of pop culture have a higher barrier to entry than “On Cinema at the Cinema,” but even fewer are as rewarding to new viewers willing to invest countless hours of their lives. Tim Heidecker and Gregg Turkington’s longtime Adult Swim series is ostensibly a parody of syndicated movie review shows like “Siskel & Ebert & the Movies,” with the entirety of each episode taking place on a chintzy talk show set. But over the course of 12 seasons and countless spinoffs, it has evolved into something much, much weirder.
Each episode features Heidecker and Turkington hosting their own public access show about movies, with the two men reviewing films they clearly haven’t seen (a running gag is that every single film receives a perfect “five bags of popcorn” rating). But the real action begins when the reviews end, as they frequently devote a majority of their airtime...

It’s hard to define exactly what actor/comedian/musician Tim Heidecker does — the deliberate result of a Dead Sea-dry sense of humor that can make even his most committed supporters feel like they’re not always in on the joke — but if anything binds his various projects together it might be a consistent effort to explore the value of absurdity in an increasingly absurd world. You can see it in “The Comedy,” a semi-improvised satire in which Heidecker gave one of the decade’s great performances as a trust fund man-child who gets unmoored between irony and entropy. You can hear it on albums like “Too Dumb for Suicide: Tim Heidecker’s Trump Songs,” in which he mocks our reality TV president in order to grapple with the futility of mocking our reality TV president.
And you can watch it darken and metastasize for hours and hours and...

Outside of his wildly experimental work in TV comedy, Tim Heidecker has made a name for himself embodying variations on the cringingly awkward doofus you’d do anything to avoid talking to at your friend’s next BBQ. Few are more skilled than Heidecker at playing passive-aggressive and entitled jerks: you could argue he’s the Michael Jordan of middling white men.

What is it about the complete lack of faith in the government and the consistent empowerment of white supremacists that tickles so many so-called liberal filmmakers? Last year it was director Adam McKay’s “Vice,” and now it’s “Mister America,” director Eric Notarnicola’s uncomfortable mockumentary presumably meant to parody modern political decay.
But because it is filmed like a documentary, with an uncomfortably convincing central performance by actor and co-writer Tim Heidecker, it almost does seem like a completely unqualified Tim really is running for San Bernardino district attorney. In today’s political climate, where a man was elected president of the United States just weeks after being accused of sexual harassment, it wouldn’t be unbelievable to watch a similarly unfit white guy, who also narrowly escaped criminal prosecution, confidently run for major office.

If you are of voting age in the United States today, you know that stranger things have happened than someone like Tim Heidecker getting elected to public office. But in a world where Americans are getting punked on an almost daily basis by their TV-famous cretin in chief, do we really need a smug fake-news “documentary” making a mockery of the political system?
Maybe that’s too literal an assessment of “Mister America,” the latest oddball installment in the long-running performance-art curiosity that is “On Cinema at the Cinema,” in which a character named Tim Heidecker (played by absurdist comedian/outsider artist Tim Heidecker) pretends to run for district attorney of San Bernardino, Calif. Will he win? That is so not the point in this consistently obnoxious, #onlyfans offering () whose very existence seems to be the punchline to a joke that goes, “Just how far are they going to take this?...

No, it’s not Greta Gerwig’s next film project, but it could be just as transformative for the film industry. Tim Heidecker, one of the brilliantly silly minds behind “Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!”, is coming out with a new political mockumentary just in time for the 2020 election. “Mister America,” which just released an intriguing first trailer, follows the comedian as he campaigns for San Bernardino District Attorney. Written by Heidecker along with director Eric Notarnicola and Gregg Turkington, “Mister America” looks like just the thing to help you through election fatigue.
The official synopsis reads: “A freshman filmmaker follows Tim Heidecker during the final month of his campaign for district attorney. What begins as a profile of an outsider candidate facing an uphill battle evolves into a study of toxic delusion as Tim’s motivations and controversial past begin to unravel his candidacy. Ostensibly a parody of know-nothing movie-review culture couched in Tim Heidecker’s inimitable, increasingly prevalent “weirdness,” the long-running On Cinema gradually reveals itself as one of the great contemporary chronicles of obsessiveness, loneliness, greed, idiocy, evil, failure–the pillars of our existence. Were it only as funny as it is, I still wouldn’t be able to wait for Mister America, Heidecker and Gregg Turkington’s big-screen transition.
Directed by Eric Notarnicola, it follows Heidecker’s (speaking for his character) campaign for District Attorney of San Bernardino County following his acquittal of nearly 20 murder charges–itself the subject of The Trial, a mini-season that’s one of the most radical adaptations of a different form (here the televised trial) I’ve ever seen a work of fiction take on. Magnolia Pictures has nabbed North American rights to “Mister America,” a feature-length comedy that’s being billed as an extension of the world of “On Cinema,” the cult Adult Swim show.
The film stars “On Cinema” hosts Tim Heidecker and Gregg Turkington and follows Heidecker’s attempt to enter the world of politics. Eric Notarnicola, who previously oversaw several episodes of the show along with its 2018 Oscar special, directs. Magnolia is eyeing a fall theatrical release.
In the movie, Heidecker beats a murder charge for selling faulty e-cigarettes at an Edm festival, and mounts a campaign to unseat the San Bernardino District Attorney. His effort to win voters tries to overcome a lack of experience and funding by leaning into the candidate’s personal likability. It does not go well.
“We unleashed Tim into the real world to run the worst campaign in modern history, and document the process,” said Notarnicola in a statement.

Who would have thought that a ’90s ‘slacker’ independent filmmaker would make such a strong romantic statement? Well, it’s not all romance in the old sense. In what must be a project of love, Richard Linklater examines the ongoing love life of Jesse & Céline, in three movies spread across eighteen years. The conversations are as free- flowing as are the cameras roaming through European back streets. Thanks to the commitment of Julie Delpy and Ethan Hawke, the in-depth relationship seems real.

Richard Spencer, a prominent member of the so-called “alt-right” who has called for “peaceful ethnic cleansing,” was punched in the face following Donald Trump’s inauguration on Friday. As you can imagine, a wave of sympathy (read: gifs, memes and hashtags) immediately followed after video of the incident made its way online. Among the many to chime in is Tim Heidecker of “Tim and Eric,” who recorded a song called “Richard Spencer.” Listen below.

Spencer — who, contrary to said video evidence, tweeted on Friday that he “can take a punch” — has called Martin Luther King, Jr. a “fraud and degenerate” in the past. He also, in case you’ve already forgotten, got his clock cleaned a couple days ago. Heidecker’s piano ballad chronicling the event revolves around a few key lines: “You can’t wish anyone dead,...

In early December, the political crisis engulfing South Korea took a consequential turn when the country’s Parliament voted to impeach President Park Geun-hye. The crisis – spurned by an ongoing political scandal involving corporate coercion, government embezzlement, and a religious shaman – has crippled the government and scandalized the nation, leading to massive protests on the streets of Seoul.
While it is unclear if President Park will remain in office – the country’s Constitutional Court will now decide whether to let the impeachment stand – it seems clear that this scandal will have far-reaching effects in South Korea, up to and including its vibrant film production industry.
There’s certainly no love lost between Park’s government and many of the leading light of the so-called Korean New Wave. Indeed, many of the actors and directors who, building on local acclaim and box office success, burst onto the international stage in the early to mid 2000’s,...

Arnold Schwarzenegger's Commando is a badass movie that follows a retired black ops commando as he takes on a barrage of South American criminals. It's hilarious to see what it would look like as a 1980s Japanese TV series.
The spoof comes from Eyes On Cinema, and there's just something strange and funny about seeing Schwarzenegger obliterate a bunch of bad guys to the sweet sounds of a Japanese pop song. It may be absolutely ridiculous, but it sure is entertaining. ...

Director Jim Jarmusch sat down with New York Film Festival Director Kent Jones for this year’s On Cinema master class, to discuss some of his favorite films and directors, including Samuel Fuller, Abbas Kiarostami, Aki Kaurismäki, Robert Wise, Nicholas Ray, and others. You can watch the entire one-hour conversation in the video above. Jarmusch had two films at the 54th New York Film Festival: Main Slate selection Paterson starring Adam Driver, and Gimme Danger, a documentary on Iggy Pop and the Stooges, which will open at the Film Society of Lincoln Center on October 28.

Unless you live in New York City and have some cash to spend or a P&I pass to wave, the New York Film Festival can feel a bit distant. But the Film Society of Lincoln Center does what’s possible to bring some of that experience to the non-metropolitan types, especially with their live events — which, in turn, is great #content for us to share. (Not to reveal too much about how the sausage is made, but…) The most enticing released this year, at least so far, is an On Cinema talk with Jim Jarmusch, who did the career-and-philosophy rundown for about an hour with the one and only Kent Jones. If you know his films and even a bit of his temperament, you have some idea of what to expect.

Quentin Tarantino has never been one to shy away from lauding his filmmaking heroes for their work or heaping on the homages to other cinema classics in his own works, and fans of the “Inglourious Basterds” and “Pulp Fiction” director’s films often find much to explore and discover within his frames. One such example are some of the (very sexy) parallels between Tarantino’s still-maligned “Death Proof” and Brian De Palma’s similarly overlooked “Femme Fatale,” especially when it comes to a pair of tantalizing dance scenes.

Tim Heidecker and Gregg Turkington’s particular brand of cringe humor isn’t for everyone, but the duo’s latest season of their wonderfully deranged (and honestly, kind of sad, but on purpose) Adult Swim movie review show, “On Cinema,” is tapping into the kind of broad comedic strokes the pair don’t normally go for. Gregg Turkington's comedy isn't for everyone. Under his guise as sleazy, skeezy, button pushing standup Neil Hamburger, he has perversely offended audiences with his ribald, off-putting show captured on a handful of cult classic records. Move over Alicia Vikander —it looks like 2015 is going to belong to Gregg Turkington. The host of the one of the most important film criticism shows ever, "On Cinema At The Cinema," Turkington has been quietly showing off his tremendous acting talent. "Imagine a soldier the size of an insect—the ultimate secret weapon." Ahead of Ant-Man’s July 17th release, a humor-heavy new trailer for the film has arrived, giving us another look at Paul Rudd in the titular role, Corey Stoll as Yellowjacket, Evangeline Lilly as Hope Van Dyne, and Michael Douglas as Hank Pym.

Over five seasons, Tim Heidecker and Gregg Turkington have been changing the face of film criticism with "On Cinema At The Cinema" on Adult Swim. The pair has brought audiences unbiased reviews, pure movie passion, and thus a much needed voice in the stale arena of movie journalism, but as season five wound down, problems began to surface between the duo. An apparently troubled Heidecker left the show in the hands of Turkington, and headed to Jackson Hole, Wyoming, leaving many to wonder what the future of the program might be. Well, not only has season six returned, but so too has Heidecker, taking the reins once again after the debut episode hosted by Turkington alone. And late last week, I got on the phone with both of them to talk about the new season of the show, whether they can put the focus back on the movies and away from Heidecker's personal life,...

“Scott, I’ve been watching you for a while now. You’re different. While there’s always something stirring about one Marvel project or another, there’s one property that’s been suspiciously quiet as of late. It’s been a good six weeks since we’ve had any news on their troubled title, Ant-Man. Even then, it was a straw-clutching report about Evangeline Lilly’s haircut.
Now, however, we have something a bit more exciting, as THR reports that Weeds star Martin Donovan has joined the cast. As secrecy surrounding the pic is paramount, there’s very little they can reveal about who it is he’ll be playing. In fact, this is all they would offer:
Donovan’s role is being kept under wraps, but sources say it is pivotal to the story.

Yesterday marked the first day of principal photography for Ant-Man. If I’m to be honest, I’m still a bit bummed that Edgar Wright and Joe Cornish have left the project. I think their take on the Marvel Universe could have been one akin to James Gunn’s approach to Guardians of the Galaxy. Alas, we are still getting an Ant-Man film and the casting is pretty great. We also have a look at Paul Rudd as Scott Lang Aka Ant-Man.

Marvel’s Ant-Man has only been in production for a mere 24 hours, but the studio has already released the first official image of Paul Rudd as conman-turned-superhero Scott Lang.
Rudd looks appropriately un-heroic here, sporting a dark hoodie, black gloves and an eyebrow bandage. We know that Lang was quite the troublemaker before running into former Ant-Man Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) though (who gives him the Ant-Man tech and trains him to be a superhero in order to pull of a dangerous heist), so he definitely looks the part in this first photo.
