James Pendrick has diversified into motion pictures, with sound, and has invited a chosen audience of friends, investors and even his rival, Thomas Alva Edison, to be present. During the show, one of the main investors is shot dead. Murdoch, Brackenreid and Crabtree are on hand to start investigating immediately. They quickly determine the moment that someone fired the shot, but it takes the observations of Dr Ogden to discern that the man who died was quite likely not the intended victim.
Pendrick is sure that Edison is the culprit. He believes that Edison is out to ruins him, while Edison, for his part is sure that Pendrick is violating patents held by him.
Pendrick's movie is about a detective called Murdoch, and he arranges to film in Police Station 4, but during the filming, the actor playing Murdoch is shot and wounded. Once again, it seems that someone else may have been the intended target.
For once, this episode is short on clues, even if it is long on knowing self-referential comedy. Even so, there is enough for sleuths in the audience to get their teeth into.
