Exclusive: Mad Dog 2020 Casting, a 25-year-old British agency that has supplied background actors to productions including Call the Midwife and Doctor Who, is ignoring court orders to pay clients for work completed last year.
Mad Dog 2020 continues to trade despite failing to observe multiple county court judgments in favor of supporting artists owed hundreds of pounds from 2023. The company has also been accused of ghosting clients chasing money.
The payment issues have been rumbling on for many months, despite Mad Dog pledging to process all outstanding payments by the end of January 2024. Some clients have received the money they were owed, but others continue to chase. Equity and Bectu, two of the most prominent UK creative industry unions, are supporting affected members.

It’s perhaps no surprise that for their big return to the small screen, Wallace and Gromit will face off against their iconic foe, Feathers McGraw, once more in Vengeance Most Fowl. The BBC have confirmed that the new film will be bigger in scope than the four short films – A Grand Day Out, The Wrong Trousers, A Close Shave and A Matter of Loaf and Death – and will in fact be a feature film...

Residuals, royalties and an end to “exploitative practices” should be enshrined into UK law, according to the Writers Guild of Great Britain (Wggb), which has issued a manifesto for the incoming government.
Alongside demands around AI and fair treatment, the Wggb’s ‘Putting Writers at the Heart of the Story’ document called for “an end to ‘in-perpetuity buy-out’ clauses and other exploitative practices, through legislation that requires fair remuneration for creators including royalties and residuals.”
The document comes a few months after the U.S. Writers Guild secured improved streaming residuals as part of its high-profile deal with the AMPTP. In the UK, however, Deadline revealed that Doctor Who had shifted away from a residual model for its writers after Disney+ came on board.
Since then, the Wggb in the UK has struck a first-of-its-kind deal over live-action scripted series with Netflix, along with landing a 10% pay rise and improved residuals with the BBC.

Steven Moffat has penned cancel culture comedy drama Douglas Is Cancelled. Here’s the trailer for the new programme.
Before Steven Moffat became known for writing some of the greatest episodes of Doctor Who, like The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances, The Girl In The Fireplace, Blink, Silence In The Library/Forest Of The Dead and then showrunning the Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi eras, he was a prolific comedy writer.
His first series, Press Gang, was a huge success and he followed it up by drawing on his own divorce for the fantastic, farcical Joking Apart. Though school sitcom Chalk was a misfire, his greatest sitcom success was Coupling, a tightly plotted ensemble sitcom that included one episode with half the dialogue in Hebrew and another in split screen, with several plots taking place simultaneously.

Matt Smith may play a fan-favorite Targaryen right now, but there was another Targaryen descendant who has always had fan support for being the best Game of Thrones character. Fans may get riled up for that exact reason at Smith’s recent comments on who would win a battle between Daemon Targaryen and Jon Snow. Smith shared that Daemon would emerge victorious over Kit Harington’s Jon Snow in such a scenario.

Such a fight would never take place in the Game of Thrones universe because of the 200-year gap between the storylines. However, Smith shared that his character’s ownership of the large red dragon Caraxes would make him a clear winner over Jon Snow.

The fact that Matt Smith has been in three of the most well-known franchises in the world is proof of his extraordinary acting talent. He has seen the best and the worst of it all, whether it was the mysterious former Doctor Who, a Marvel villain in Morbius, or an insane Prince Daemon Targaryen in the Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon. He recently recalled meeting Kit Harington, during the early days of Game of Thrones.

Being so popular around the world for so many years has its own advantages and disadvantages for Doctor Who. On the one hand, the show has already spawned many successful series with many new actors. On the other hand, the moment the fan-favorite actor leaves the show, the fans begin their war against whoever comes next.
This was the case in 2010 when fans of the 10th Doctor, played by David Tennant, rioted against his successor, Matt Smith. The actor was only 26 when he took over the role of the centuries-old alien, so viewers doubted he could pull it off. His predecessor, however, was much friendlier, and way more helpful.

*Warning — this review contains some spoilers for '73 Yards'*
With last week’s incendiary chamber-piece ‘Boom’, Steven Moffat took Doctor Who back to basics, delivering in the process the first true classic of the show’s latest reboot. Give it some time, and Russell T. Davies’ follow up, '73 Yards', may yet prove to be its second. Emphatically swinging the series’ genre pendulum back from sci-fi to the supernatural, Davies' latest self-penned offering is a deliciously dark, near-Doctorless diversion into folk horror territory. Eerie, elegiac, and ambiguous almost to a fault, it's a properly haunting tale that’s destined to be talked about, debated, and theorised upon for years to come.
Right from the get-go, it’s clear this isn’t going to be your average episode of Doctor Who. A pointed lack of opening titles adds an extra chill to ‘73 Yards’’s cold open, which sees the Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa...

BBC boss Tim Davie has issued a dire warning over the future of public service broadcasting globally. “It’s scary. It’s really problematic,” he said. “I mean not ‘marginally troublesome.’ I would say it’s a red alert situation in many many markets.”
Davie warned the situation was only getting worse as politics becomes “more polarized.”
Davie was speaking at the Deloitte and Enders Analysis Media & Telecoms 2024 and Beyond Conference in London on Tuesday morning alongside Channel 4 boss Alex Mahon, managing director of ITV Studios Julian Bellamy and Sarah Rose, president of Channel 5 and regional lead for Paramount on a panel headed “U.K. television’s digital age.” The panel was moderated by Deloitte partner Rupert Darbyshire.
Mahon also spoke of public service broadcasters’ (PSBs) “battle for truth and trust” which she said is something “very different to something aggregated and algorithmically served.” PSBs were particularly important for young people,...

“I don’t want to be a market failure,” which is “what’s happening around the world” to public service broadcasters, BBC boss Tim Davie told Deloitte’s Media & Telecoms 2024 and Beyond Conference in London on Tuesday. “It’s scary,” he said, speaking of a “red alert situation” in many parts of the world.
Davie in an appearance lauded the U.K. production sector for its success, but also noted that “many decisions we make are uneconomic.” That said, while the goal is to continue making and airing hit shows that audiences enjoy and love, “we don’t have to make the numbers work on every single show” as a public broadcaster to ensure important, educative and other shows make it to the screen, he emphasized.
“We have a rich history of working together” with other companies, Davie said about the BBC, as well as other U.K. public broadcasters.

Doctor Who is currently in full flow, with three episodes left of Ncuti Gatwa and Millie Gibson’s first series before all the series 15 speculation and the long wait for the Christmas special begins. The peerless Inside No. 9 is also midway through its current (and final) run, with just two episodes to go, so catch up on that on BBC iPlayer if you haven’t been watching weekly.

Warning: Spoilers ahead for Doctor Who season 14, episode 5, “Dot and Bubble.” Viewers Draw Comparisons to Black Mirror The latest episode of Doctor Who, “Dot and Bubble,” has sparked a flurry of reactions among fans, with many branding it as a Black Mirror rip off. Daisy Ridley, known best for her role as Rey in the "Star Wars" sequel trilogy, had a brand new, critically acclaimed movie in theaters this past weekend. One would be forgiven for not knowing that, though, as Disney didn't launch a huge campaign for the release of "Young Woman and the Sea." Be that as it may, the Mouse House believes they have a winner on their hands, which is why they put the movie in theaters in the first place. But it's not trying to rake in big bucks at the box office, that's for sure. In fact, the studio isn't even reporting box office numbers for the film at all.
Disney is not sharing official figures for "Young Woman and the Sea," which is odd for a company known for its dominance at the box office in the 2010s. Granted, Disney hasn't been nearly as dominant in the pandemic era,...

Warning: Contains some spoilers for ‘Dot And Bubble’
For anyone who might’ve found last week’s folk horror-inflected episode of Doctor Who, ‘73 Yards’, a little too ambiguous, you’ll have no such quibbles with the series’ follow-up offering, ‘Dot And Bubble’. A candy-coloured cautionary tale about the perils of tech dependency and online echo chambers set in a world where everybody lives in literal social media bubbles, the fifth episode of Russell T. Davies’ Who reboot is about as subtle as a flatulent Slitheen. But unsubtle doesn’t necessarily mean ineffective, and despite the heavy-handedness of its opening throes, Davies’ Black Mirror-riffing latest eventually builds to a flooring sucker punch of a finale that would stop even Charlie Brooker in his tracks.
After the darkness of ‘Boom’ and the wintry chill of ‘73 Yards’, ‘Dot And Bubble’ sees Davies whisk viewers away to Finetime, a pastel-paletted, domed-in alien idyll populated by rich-kid human colonists.

Matt Smith’s role as Daemon Targaryen in House of the Dragon may be his most anticipated performance today, but that was not the case when he was cast in Doctor Who in 2009. The actor faced a lot of early criticism from fans of the franchise just because he was an unknown star.

One of the most attractive qualities of Doctor Who is the fact that the show constantly changes the actors who play the main roles of the Doctor himself and his companions. While some may find the recasting annoying, as the actors whose characters you liked leave the show forever, others find that this change is what keeps the show interesting.

First things first: yes, that is her real name, or at least the one that she’s gone by professionally since 1980 (you can check the end credits on previous shows). Susan Twist is indeed the actor who has made a cameo appearance in every episode of Doctor Who this series, as well as the 2023 Christmas special and anniversary adventure “Wild Blue Yonder”.
That fact is worth establishing because “Susan Twist” is a ridiculously fun name for a Doctor Who actor to have. That’s because the show’s first season in 1963 introduced a 15-year-old character named Susan Foreman, the Doctor’s granddaughter. Susan was left behind on 22nd century Earth after falling in love with a local boy, and was told by the Doctor in 1964 episode “Flashpoint” that one day he would come back (though if he did, we never saw him do it).

If you needed to know who the Fifteenth Doctor is, then “Space Babies” told you: he’s not just the guy who saves the babies from the monster, he also saves the monster itself. That episode established the Doctor and Ruby as equal opportunities rescuers; not only extending the hand of help to the adorable, but also to disgusting creatures made of snot. “That’s what you do,” explained Ruby in the series 14 opener, “you save everyone.”
As hero manifestos go, it couldn’t have been clearer. And then… it instantly stopped being true. Over the course of the next four episodes, the Doctor didn’t save a soul.
In “The Devil’s Chord”, John Lennon and Paul McCartney struck the chord that banished Maestro. In “Boom”, the AI version of dead Vater infected the ambulance system and saved Ruby’s life.

The sci-fi genre has always been one of the most beloved among cinephiles as it gives us a new look at a particular technology or our world. There was a time when Max (formerly known as HBO Max) was the place for peak sci-fi shows but after taking off Westworld and Raised by Wolves from the service, and since then it has been lacking a bit regarding sci-fi shows. But still, we picked the seven best sci-fi shows that we could find on Max.

The face of British science fiction for decades has been The Doctor: an ancient Time Lord, a grumpy, sarcastic, lonely traveler with an extravagant taste in clothing.
He travels alone in a spaceship that looks like a 1960s police box from the outside, and only occasionally takes along ordinary people who become heroes next to him.
And it's time to choose the best incarnation of the Doctor, let's go!
5. The Thirteenth Doctor – Jodie Whittaker
The 13th series of Doctor Who turned out to be almost the most problematic in the show's history. Even before it started, fans were divided into two camps – those who supported the creators' decision to make the Doctor a woman, and those who did not.
The changes affected not only the gender of the main character, but also the plot, as well as the Doctor's companions, of which there were three. Despite all the controversy surrounding the Thirteenth Doctor,...

House of the Dragon co-creator Ryan Condal had Matt Smith’s face in mind when he wrote the role of Daemon Targaryen in the series. Soon, he met with Smith to discuss the role along with co-showrunner Miguel Sapochnik in 2020. Smith agreed to the role but he had his concerns about the series. He was worried that the series came too soon after Game of Thrones ended and that audiences had already seen this story.

Smith’s concerns were unfounded as the first season of the series received an overwhelmingly positive response from GoT fans. He is all set to return to the role in HoTD Season 2, which will focus on the Dance of the Dragons, the Targaryen Civil War between Rhaenyra’s team Black and Alicent’s team Green.

With its list of new releases for June 2024, Disney+ isn’t going to beat the “only a Star Wars and Marvel streamer” allegations. That’s because there is just one major new release and it’s of the Star Wars variety.
Thankfully, Star Wars: The Acolyte, premiering on June 4, sounds pretty good! This series from Leslye Headland (Russian Doll) is set during the end of the High Republic era and will follow a respected Jedi master (played by Squid Game‘s Lee Jung-jae) investigating a crime that brings him back into contact with his former Padawan (Amandla Stenberg).
Aside from that, Disney+ has little else going on this month. But a fresh Star War and more episodes of Doctor Who should be enough for most of us.
Here’s everything coming to Disney+ this June.

Everyone's fears about AI and other advanced tech scream to be addressed by sci-fi, and Doctor Who rose to the challenge.
Doctor Who Season 1 Episode 5 revolved around a futuristic world where spoiled rich kids all had their personal AI assistants and were constantly plugged into video chat. No one could see the monsters right in front of them.
The message was obvious, yet the story needed to be told.
Lindy's Unlikability Was a Huge Problem
Although the Doctor and Ruby tried to guide the protagonist, Lindy, at times, the story focused on Lindy.
It was reminiscent of "Blink," which told Sally Sparrow's story of her battle with the Weeping Angels. David Tennant's Doctor appeared only in a video about the phenomenon, except Sally Sparrow was much easier to root for.

Warning: this Doctor Who review contains spoilers.
When teasing “Dot and Bubble”, Russell T Davies described the episode to Doctor Who Magazine as a “step into Black Mirror territory”. It certainly wears that inspiration on its sleeve, down to the specific instalment of Black Mirror it seems to be aping, “Nosedive”. The arch, vaguely Stepfordian tone, the broad swipe at social media, and the pastel tones of the production design are all very evocative of that episode of Charlie Brooker’s dark anthology show.
But this story of a far-future gated community where vapid rich kids are being systematically eaten alive by horrifying giant slugs also owes a tonal debt to Black Mirror. While for the most part a pitch-dark comedy, and generally pretty effective on that front, “Dot and Bubble” also shares Black Mirror’s self-consciously bleak world view, which – like the aforementioned vapid rich kids – takes some digesting.

Spoilers below for both "Doctor Who" and "Black Mirror."
In a recent interview about the latest "Doctor Who" episode, showrunner Russell T. Davies teased that the show would "step into 'Black Mirror' territory." It turns out that Davies is a big fan of the dystopian anthology series and its creator, Charlie Brooker. But even as his latest episode took inspiration from the show, he promised it'd still have that "Doctor Who" spin:

One of the greatest fears of many actors is being typecast after a successful role. It just so happens that after seeing an actor do a great job as a certain character once, casting directors all over Hollywood want them to do the same thing again and bring the same level of success to their project.
Sometimes, however, the similarities between two characters an actor plays are nothing more than coincidence. Such is the case with Baby Reindeer star Jessica Gunning and the obsessive personalities of her characters in other series.
Is Jessica Gunning in The Outlaws Season 3?
Of course, after Jessica Gunning's brilliant performance in the black comedy-thriller Baby Reindeer, which blew up the top of Netflix and stayed there for weeks, audiences were looking for more TV shows and movies starring the actress. And to the viewers’ surprise, there weren't too many options.

There’s quite the mystery surrounding the Doctor’s (Ncuti Gatwa) latest companion, Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson). And so far, over the course of Doctor Who Season 1 (the sci-fi series’ third), rather than answers, we’re just adding to the questions we have about her.
