I’m a big fan of what John Carney does when he mixes music with cinematic storytelling. He has an undeniable talent for taking songs and using them to tell a story, as you might have noticed. Once was our first example of this, with Begin Again being another winning one. Now, Carney is back this week with Sing Street, another indie musical romantic comedy/dramedy that is as good as he’s ever been. It’s a charming and delightful film, while also having a bit more on its mind than you might initially expect. It’s a winner for Carney and easily one of my favorite movies of 2016 so far. Oh, and you can probably pencil it in for an Oscar nomination (or possibly two) in the Best Original Song category. The film is, structurally speaking, sort of like a hybrid of Begin Again and Once. Set in 1980’s Dublin,...

Writer/director John Carney has found quite a comfortable niche crafting dramedies with a strong musical element. He broke out in 2007 with "Once" (which took home an Academy Award for Best Original Song) and a couple years back, was far less successful with music industry tale "Begin Again." Now, he's headed to the Sundance Film Festival with this latest, "Sing Street," and he's hoping to hit all the right notes once again. Read More: 2016 Sundance Film Festival Adds New Films By Antonio Campos, So Yong Kim, Felix van Groeningen, And More Starring Ferdia Walsh-Peelo, Lucy Boynton, Jack Reynor, Aidan Gillen, and Mark McKenna, the '80s-set story follows a young teenager who starts a band, and finds inspiration and romance. Here's the official synopsis: With 1980s Dublin mired in recession, Conor’s parents move him from a comfortable private school to a rough inner-city public school where the scrappy 14-year-old forms a band.

Putting a two-episode taste of HBO’s epic “Game of Thrones” series on IMAX screens has only served to make the argument for weekly theatrical release of each upcoming episode of author George R.R. Martin’s “A Song of Ice and Fire” fantasy juggernaut. The Season 5 trailer that aired following Thursday night’s Los Angeles IMAX screening of Season 4 episodes “The Watchers on the Wall” and “The Children,” drove the point home.

How do you rank perfection? Duncan has a go, as he lists the top 25 Jason Statham films...
For regular Den Of Geek readers, it will come as little surprise to see this list come round. We've chosen our favourite Statham films before, but such is the productivity of the great man, it was decided that a mere top ten was no longer large enough to contain his ever growing body of work. Last time I mentioned updating this piece to the man himself back in 2012 due to his insane workload, he cracked up and responded, “My productivity is overwhelming! 'Have a fucking day off!'”
Since this list has now expanded to encompass 25 of his movies, it seemed only right to include multiple sequels, with his big trio of action franchises all spawning some thoroughly entertaining fare worthy of mention, though I’ve tried to exclude the personal bias that...

Review Ron Hogan 5 May 2014 - 07:47
With great stories and performances, Game Of Thrones season 4 appears to be getting better by the episode. Here's Ron's review...
This review contains spoilers.
4.5 First Of His Name
David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have done an absolutely amazing job of adapting the A Song Of Ice And Fire universe into a television series, and full credit to HBO for letting them do all the things they want to do with their show universe. Every week I sit down to watch the new episode, and at some point or another I glance at the clock and realize that 45 minutes of my life has disappeared into Westeros. The show just moves so smoothly, transitioning gracefully between characters and settings, from the other side of the Wall to Essos and back to King's Landing, that it seems like no time has passed.
It seems that no matter...

After King Joffrey’s (Jack Gleeson) death at the reception of his wedding to Lady Margaery Tyrell (Natalie Dormer) in Game of Thrones, the killer was a mystery to those who hadn’t read George R. R. Martin’s Song of Ice and Fire. In "Oathkeeper," the mystery is solved.
Lady Olenna Killed Joffrey
Lady Olenna Tyrell (Diana Rigg), the grandmother of Joffrey’s wife of a few hours, is the one who committed the final act of murder. She admits her guilt to Margaery before leaving King’s Landing for Highgarden while giving her advice about how to use her skills as the wife of a king – more specifically to the young and impressionable Tommen – to thrive and use her will.
Though Olenna is technically the killer, she didn’t commit regicide without help. Petyr Baelish (Aiden Gillen) was the brains of the operation. He had a necklace made...
