- The head of an Internet company ostensibly for finding lost loved ones is really a front for selling personal info. Carter has to train a new cop while she looks for Beecher's killer and a new vigilante named Collier makes his appearance.
- The next number the machine dispenses is for Wayne Kruger, an Internet genius and head of a company called Life Trace, which allows people to find others through information readily available already on the web. However, Finch learns that Life Trace's primary goal, its money making venture, is as a data broker, selling the information it gathers to people who will pay for it. As Kruger prepares to make what is perhaps the biggest deal of his career, he wants to be as open and transparent as possible with his prospective clients... or so he says. Finch, Reese and Shaw also learn that there was a class action lawsuit against Kruger and Life Trace by people who were ultimately hurt by the information that was provided through the site. They believe Kruger is the target, as someone or some people, probably a coalition of those behind the lawsuit, want to expose Kruger in very public means for not being as open concerning his own life as he purports. They have to wade through the list of several hundred of those involved in the lawsuit to find who is targeting Kruger most vehemently. Meanwhile, Carter, in order to work days, decides to go into the trainer's program. As such, she receives a rookie partner, Officer Mike Laskey. Carter doesn't want Laskey to be an obstacle to her missions - to find Beecher's killer and assist Finch and the team whenever required - but she may have a different viewpoint when she learns more about Laskey's own motivations.—Huggo

But soon Kruger's credit card is denied to pay for his wedding anniversary party. Reese and Shaw attend the party and someone replaces his video of celebration with his wife per one showing him having an affair with another woman. Then a comment Kruger made about the body of his assistant to his partner is leaked to her and she quits her job. An old DIU case when Kruger was a student is leaked to his partner and he is asked to leave the company by his partner and the board. While leaving the building, his elevator drops with him inside. He drives his car, but someone hacks his command and he loses control and flips the car. Reese brings him to his apartment, where Finch and Shaw are waiting for them. Finch has analyzed the lawsuit and believes Stu Sommers, who had his daughter killed by a stalker that had found her location in Kruger's site, is behind the recent events. - Open with Finch tells Reese and Shaw there is a new number.
Carter runs into Quinn while putting flowers at Beecher's grave. They briefly discuss the case and Carter tells him she thinks there is more to his murder than meets the eyes. After she leaves Quinn makes a call, telling someone Carter might be a problem.
Carter calls Fusco and asks him to pull Beecher's case.
Finch tells them the new number is Wayne Kruger, who runs Life Trace. It's a "people search service," which really means he's a data broker. Selling information about people to individuals and the government. It's technically legal.
Shaw is waiting for Kruger in the elevator. She's able to pair his phone and watches him sit down to a meeting. Kruger is sitting down with a large retailer that is looking for a date partner. During the meeting Kruger is able to wow one of the executives by figuring out his wife is pregnant based on his grocery consumption. Kruger talks about all the uses for data and it seems to go over well. One of the retailer execs asks about privacy, a question which Kruger brushes aside. The plan is to meet the following morning.
Finch has Carter looks into Kruger. She doesn't find anything. Carter is back in a uniform working a beat. She's not thrilled.
An employee tells Kruger his credit card was denied while trying to pay for his upcoming anniversary party.
Reese and Shaw attend Kruger's party and listen to him address the crowd. Finch has found that Kruger has gone out of his way to scrub negative press from the internet. During a loving montage featuring pictures of Kruger and his wife, someone splices video images appearing to show Kruger with another woman. He orders it turned off and his wife slaps him across the face.
Shaw sends Finch restaurant security camera that appears to show the woman behind the video. He thinks the woman is Karen Mills, is part of a class action suit against Life Trace. Finch also finds the name Sherry Harper. Harper's daughter was killed by a stalker who found her address using Life Trace.
Carter and her partner pull over Mills. Mills says she got a package from someone with a DVD and instructions on what to do. Mills tells Carter that Kruger's site ruined her life by exposing old pictures taken by an ex-boyfriend. She lost her fiancé.
Kruger's assistant quits after someone sends her an unflattering comment Kruger made about her body. Collier, one of the retailer's execs tells Kruger they are backing out after word of a past DUI surfaced. Kruger is asked to take a leave of absence.
In the elevator Kruger gets a call from a robotic voice. The car stops and start to plummet. The brakes are engaged just before it crashes to the ground floor. Reese tries to stop Kruger in the garage but is a second too late.
Finch learns that Dennis Paulson, another member of the class action suit, was the person who cleaned out Kruger's bank accounts. Like Mills, he received information anonymously.
Fusco tells Carter that Beecher's file has been frozen.
While Kruger drives somebody takes over the dash of his car and begins playing the video. He then loses control of the car itself and it's flipped. Reese was right behind him and rushes to the vehicle.
Reese brings Kruger to his place where he is joined by Finch and Shaw. Finch discovers that the father of the girl killed by the stalker is named Stu Summers and has been posing as a janitor at Life Trace for the past few months. He has a background in sophisticated electronics.
While alone with Finch Kruger seems to have no remorse for the death of Summers' daughter. Kruger gets a voicemail from Collier with word there is still one more chance for him to make the deal. Finch sees that the message was already listened to by someone, likely Summers. While Finch attempts to help secure the meeting, Kruger knocks Finch over the head.
After he wakes up Finch contacts Reese and lets him know that Kruger is gone. Kruger is now armed.
We see Summers waiting in the hotel lobby. Kruger sneaks up on him with his gun pointed at him. Kruger brings Summers into the meeting with him but Collier tells him that the deal is now over. Kruger snaps and points the gun at Summers' head. Summers manages to disarm him just as Reese walks into the room. Summers details the blame he places on Kruger and his company. Reese asks him "what would Chloe want?" and Summers puts down the gun. At this moment Collier shoots both Reese and Kruger and tells Summers to leave. Collier stands over the wounded Kruger and tells him he's part of a group of thousands, there to exact revenge on those who strip people of their privacy. He shoots Kruger in the head and leaves. Reese wakes up, his bulletproof vest having caught the bullet. Shaw arrives and brings Reese out of the area.
Carter's rookie partner said he chose to work with her based on her history. He's now worried she's not interested in training anyone. It seems to work.
Finch tells Reese and Shaw that Collier took a position with his company a few months earlier to begin dismantling Kruger's life. Finch thinks Collier may just be the beginning.
