In early January, the hosts of Netflix’s feel-good series Queer Eye reunited for what might be the last time at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards. Through tears and smiles, Bobby Berk, Karamo Brown, Tan France, Antoni Porowski, and Jonathan Van Ness proudly raised their long-awaited golden statues.

Queer Eye hair expert Jonathan Van Ness just gave fans a glimpse into his love story with new husband Mark Peacock. On Jan. 2, the Netflix star posted an Instagram slideshow featuring photos of him and Mark, along with pics leading up to their private wedding day. He also included a sweet caption talking about how he and his new spouse first got together. "We went on a date in London, which turned into more dates whilst I was on comedy tour," the Gay of Thrones actor began the post. "At the end of that time I was taking my mom, aunt & friends on a mini break to Amsterdam. I wanted @marklondon to come with but, was it a bit intense to ask Mark to come after a couple...

“Queer Eye” has won Best Structured Reality Program at the Emmys twice in a row (2018-2019), which is why it’s so strange that its quintet of co-hosts has never been recognized by the television academy, even with a nomination. Could Bobby Berk, Karamo Brown, Tan France, Antoni Porowski and Jonathan Van Ness finally break through in the race for Best Reality Host? They’ll have to overcome the television academy’s unusual bias against non-competitive shows.
The Emmys introduced the Best Reality Host category in 2008. And though hosts of both competitive and non-competitive reality shows have always been eligible, that first list of nominees was strictly competitive: Tom Bergeron (“Dancing with the Stars”), Heidi Klum (“Project Runway”), Howie Mandel (“Deal or No Deal”), Ryan Seacrest (“American Idol”) and winner Jeff Probst (“Survivor”).

Jonathan Van Ness, the TV personality and grooming expert on Netflix’s “Queer Eye,” opened up about his HIV-positive diagnosis in an interview with the New York Times on Saturday.
“When ‘Queer Eye’ came out, it was really difficult because I was like, ‘Do I want to talk about my status?,'” he told the Times. “And then I was like, ‘The Trump administration has done everything they can do to have the stigmatization of the L.G.B.T. community thrive around me.’ … I do feel the need to talk about this.”
The conversation comes in advance of the Sept. 24 release of Van Ness’ memoir, “Over the Top,” which he said will reveal more insight into “the effervescent, gregarious majestic center-part-blow-dry cotton-candy figure-skating queen” that viewers have come to know him as from “Queer Eye.”

“Queer Eye” star Jonathan Van Ness wants you to know that he’s more than just a “yas, queen”-espousing ponytail with a mustache who’s ready to make you over.
In a recent New York Times profile written by Alex Hawgood, the Netflix reality TV star who last weekend destroyed the Creative Arts Emmys red carpet, Van Ness touches on the issues he covers in his upcoming memoir, “Over the Top.” Van Ness talks about his punishing upbringing as a much-bullied, closeted young gay man, as well as his addictions to drugs and anonymous chatroom sex, and being diagnosed with HIV.
“I was too fat, too femme, too loud and too unlovable,” Van Ness said of his childhood in Illinois as the gay son of a family that owns the Wisconsin television empire Quincy Media. An early addiction to binge-eating preceded fixings for cocaine, meth, and internet-arranged sex with older men.

An employee at Old Navy’s Philadelphia store accused the company of purposefully sidelining people of color during a taping of Netflix’s “Queer Eye,” saying white employees were bused in from other stores for the day of the shoot.
“[M]y job is nothing but people of color,” Monae Alvarado, an employee at the Center City location in Philadelphia, wrote on Facebook last week. “Most of us did an overnight to help make the store look beautiful. Today they brought all these workers from other store around the region and they were all white. They had us standing in the back not to be seen while the other workers from another store get to work on our floor like it’s their store.”
Two other anonymous employees of color shared similar stories with Philadelphia Magazine, with one accusing the company of racism in its staffing choices on the day of the taping.

For Jonathan Van Ness, best known as the grooming expert within Queer Eye’s Fab Five, the summer of 2019 came with mixed emotions. Seeing the Netflix reality series pick up six more Emmy nominations was, of course, cause for celebration. Just two months earlier, though, the pop culture aficionado said goodbye to HBO’s Game of Thrones, a series he and millions of others had loved—and with it, his Funny or Die short-form series Gay of Thrones—the combination of which was a somber affair.
With Queer Eye, Van Ness saw his life transform overnight, going from a celebrity hairstylist to an international celebrity, working on multiple fronts as a TV personality, author, political activist, and influencer. What some may not realize, though, is that Gay of Thrones was the project that put Van Ness on the map. Coming together five years before Netflix’s Queer Eye reboot, the...

One of the saddest things about the conclusion of “Game of Thrones” — apart from who died, who said goodbye and who was exiled — was that it meant the end of “Gay of Thrones,” the Funny or Die web series in which “Queer Eye” star Jonathan Van Ness recapped the show through his uniquely fabulous perspective. Well, “Game” and “Gay” are both nominated for Emmys this year, so Lena Headey joined Van Ness to wish each other luck. Watch the special Emmy edition of “Gay of Thrones” above.

“It’s been such an incredibly transformative time in my life, where I’ve learned so much about myself,” explains Jonathan Van Ness. “Including that I wanted to be an entertainer. Evocative purple skies bear witness to a tantalizing and determining fling in Lucio Castro’s structurally audacious debut “End of the Century,” the gay equivalent of Richard Linklater’s “Before” trilogy, distilled into a single film that’s constructed of buoyant encounters separated by two decades, conversational walks through a European city, and the illusion of a married-with-children future.

“Queer Eye” grooming guru Jonathan Van Ness has come a long way since Funny or Die introduced him in “Gay of Thrones,” a satirical take on the HBO fantasy hit that launched in 2013.
“I used to feel like I got a lot of no’s,” Van Ness told TheWrap. “‘Gay of Thrones’ was the only thing I ever really did. Mice, landline telephones and sex scenes — these are a few of Julia Garner, Marsha Stephanie Blake and Michael Kelly’s least favorite things.

TV is bigger than ever, and thus so are the Emmys, but not everyone has the ad budgets of Netflix, Amazon, NBC Universal and other small-screen heavy-hitters. But Funny or Die may have the last laugh. They created do-it-yourself campaign ads made up of the Fyc screeners that have been sent out by other companies, which means that Netflix, Amazon and NBC Universal (among others) are kind of financing Funny or Die’s campaign for them. What could you call this — redistribution of wealth? Emmy socialism? Can we get a retweet from Bernie Sanders or Aoc?

There are lavish Emmy campaigns with elaborate Fyc spaces, panels and food for TV Academy voters in addition to custom-made mailers. And then there are shows with little on no Emmy budgets, forcing their producers to get creative. That is the case with Comedy Central’s Corporate and the team from Funny or Die, who had a similar idea this year, using other series’ Emmy screeners to promote their shows.
Over at Funny Or Die, they used all the Fyc mailers they had received during the campaign to create Diy ads for Billy On the Street; Brockmire; Gay Of Thrones; I Love You, America with Sarah Silverman; No Activity; and American Vandal.
The folks at Comedy Central’s Corporate also thought of a way to help people rid of the ton of screeners they have piling up in their homes or offices — by setting up three pop-up recycling stations throughout Los Angeles.

“Game of Thrones” fans have lots of opinions about this week’s episode, “The Bells,” which featured controversial payoffs for Daenerys (Emilia Clarke), Cersei (Lena Headey) and Jaime (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau), among others. Could Daenerys Targaryen's hair be full of secrets? Game of Thrones' final season is hurtling toward its April premiere, but it's possible that Emilia Clarke unknowingly spoiled her character's ultimate fate way back in September 2017 with an innocent-enough Instagram. If you work in television in any capacity, there are over a hundred categories in which you could be nominated for an Emmy, largely in below-the-line capacities. And what we find every year is how often, behind the scenes, the nominees still happen to be heavily male versus female — while certain fields like casting and make-up do lean heavily towards women nominees, there are still many areas where they struggle to be acknowledged.
Below are some (not all) of the shows featuring deserving women who, this year, received important recognition by the Academy for the work that happens behind the scenes, from writing to editing to production design to directing.
“Twin Peaks”
Outstanding Production Design For A Narrative Contemporary Program (One Hour Or More)

Jonathan Van Ness is having an extremely good year, and in particular, an extremely good day. When the Emmy nominations were announced this morning, Van Ness was surrounded by his Queer Eye costars to discover that not only was the critically acclaimed Netflix series nominated for an Emmy (or several), but so was his hilarious Game of Thrones recap show, Gay of Thrones. After also scoring a nomination in 2016, Gay of Thrones wasn't eligible in 2017 due to the fact that Game of Thrones aired later in the year. Other than depriving him of another year at the Emmys, Game of Thrones' airing schedule also created a pretty interesting schedule for Jonathan. "Last year, I shot Gay...

If we earned four Emmy nominations, we’d be pretty excited, too.
The cast and crew of “Queer Eye” snapped up four Emmy nods, the first since the reboot hit Netflix in February, which includes Outstanding Structured Reality Program, Outstanding Casting for a Structured Reality Program, Outstanding Picture Editing for a Structured or Competition Reality Program and Outstanding Cinematography for a Reality Program.
During the announcements, the “Queer Eye” team was huddled around a TV listening to the nominations, and when their show is announced, the room erupts.

Before “Queer Eye” was a twinkle in our queer eyes, there was “Gay of Thrones.” Starring everyone’s favorite long-locked mother of unicorns, the Funny or Die series features “Queer Eye” hair stylist Jonathan Van Ness rehashing each “Game of Thrones” episode, and it’s exactly as amazing as that sounds. Spewing cultural references like dragonfire, Van Ness and his rotating cast of guests assign clever nicknames to each character: Daenerys is “Christina Aguilera,” Cersei is “Vintage Mia Farrow,” and Arya is “Baby Kill Bill,” as a small sampling. As guests sit in his stylist’s chair, Van Ness rattles off the drama of Westeros with his signature panache — serving Valley girl realness with a deep and abiding cultural knowledge.

Nicole Byer Talks ‘Nailed It,’ Season 2’s ‘Queer Eye’ Crossover and That ‘Drag Race’ Butterfly Stunt
“Nailed It!” is a unique breed in the world of reality competition shows, walking the fine line between genuine contest and tongue-in-cheek sendup of the entire genre. Most of the time, that unique sensibility seems to stem from its host, the actress and comedian Nicole Byer.
From her breakout as a regular commentator on MTV’s “Girl Code,” to her scripted MTV-turned-Facebook Watch series “Loosely Exactly Nicole,” much of Byer’s comedy is embodied by that same flavor of sharp, but always good-natured, ribbing.
On “Nailed It!,” the Netflix baking competition where amateur bakers attempt to recreate elaborate professional treats to comically poor results, Byer’s keen stewardship keeps the show from veering into territory that’s too mean or sad to be entertaining. And it’s what seems to have resonated with fans, who have taken to the show in droves.

The expansion of the short form Emmy category to include five awards is a sign of the fast-paced times as content creators grow their offerings and established networks and broadcasters see the value in digital shorts as a way to build brands and keep audiences engaged.
Take, for example, NBC’s digital team, which recently submitted offshoot short-form content for three shows, “This Is Us,” “The Voice” and “Saturday Night Live” for Emmy consideration in short-form awards. NBC Digital executive vice president Rob Hayes says the goal of that content was to keep fans returning to the shows and build a bigger audience on social media.
“On ‘This Is Us,’ we basically had to build it from scratch and lean into what we thought would be elements of storytelling that would resonate with the audiences on these platforms,” Hayes says.

“I wanted to do something that was like Mr. Rogers for adults” says Sarah Silverman about her Hulu variety sketch series “I Love You America.” In our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video above), she explains, “I liked the challenge of having hard comedy with heart, care, empathy and compassion. Can those things co-exist? I think that they can. I want to connect with people and be earnest. But we want to sandwich it in a big bready sandwich of aggressively, dumb, ridiculous, silly comedy.’”
In working with Funny or Die, Silverman delivers monologues, travels the country to meet people, performs comedy sketches and interviews people who have experienced change. She reveals, “I wanted to do a show that was about social politics and feelings. And what I’ve learned is that it’s about connecting with people. You certainly don’t change people’s minds by shouting facts and poll numbers at them.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: What is the best reboot/revival of a TV show? (Not of a movie, so no “Fargo.”)
Allison Keene (@KeeneTV), Collider
Although I’m not a fan of much rebooted or revived TV, I do absolutely love the relaunched version of “Battlestar Galactica”. In the early aughts, Ronald D. Moore reimagined Glen A. Larsen’s 1978 series as a sleek, sexy space opera for what was then known as the Sci-Fi Channel. The obsession with this series is really best described by that classic “Portlandia” sketch, as the new “Battlestar” was accessible even to those who (like myself) are not usually that into sci-fi series.

Ten years. It's been ten long years since the Fab Five drove off for the last time. And what a time it was. (We're talking about a world where there was only One Real Housewives series on TV!)
Flashforward to 2018, Queer Eye Season 1 is back to fix lives yet again. But this time, it's an 8-episode series on Netflix that will leave you wanting more.
The original series on Bravo followed the concept of five gay men helping to redesign and fix someone's life. Nothing was off the table for this life improvement series. It was a full scope task that connected with the men's talents.
From fashion to grooming to knowledge of culture, the men would drive in and impart their expertise to a person in need.
The same core design of Queer Eye extended itself to the reboot as well. Nothing had vastly changed, except that the men...

“Queer Eye” grooming expert Jonathan Van Ness has another area of expertise: “Game of Thrones.”
Van Ness is such a fan of the HBO drama that he started an after show with Funny or Die in 2013 called “Gay of Thrones,” in which he and a celebrity guest recap the latest episode while he does their hair. We caught up with Van Ness to ask his expert opinion about how the show will end.

On Valentine's Day, two digital media companies teamed up to create a channel a press release refers to as a "lovechild." Funny or Die has made a move to serve Lgbtq+ audiences by setting up shop on the queer streaming service Revry, where shows like Gay Of Thrones are now available.
As part of its agreement with Revry, Funny or Die has launched a channel that features Lgbtq-friendly content. Gay Of Thrones, in which hairstylist Jonathan Van Ness and his guests recap Game of Thrones episodes, is a natural fit for Revry's viewers.
The podcast Throwing Shade, which is co-hosted by Gay Of Thrones co-creator Erin Gibson and was once linked to a TV deal, is also now part of the Revry library. “Given Funny Or Die’s stellar reputation in pushing edgy, young comedy voices, a content partnership with our youth-driven, boundary-pushing brand was a natural fit,” said Revry...

When the first iteration of “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy” launched, George W. Bush was President, gay marriage wasn’t legal, and fighting for Lgbtq rights was a revolutionary act.
15 years later, things have gotten better on a basic, legal level, but society is still scary. Fortunately, here come the Fab Five, preaching their fierce desire to push society beyond tolerance to acceptance — not just for gay people, but for diversity of all kinds.
It feels fair to call the newest “Queer Eye” a reboot, if only because it does feature an entirely new cast. But the role breakdown echoes that of the original series: There’s Tan France (Fashion), Antoni Porowski (Food), Karamo Brown (Culture), Bobby Berk (Design), and Jonathan Van Ness (Style). The group dynamic is notably different, as all five guys bring a puppy-like enthusiasm to each challenge, literally bounding around at times in each subject’s house with gleeful energy.

It’s a swampy day in the sleepy town of Winder, Georgia, as Queer Eye’s new Fab Five tears through the modest home of Cory, a police officer with an affinity for Nascar, pickle juice and American flag-printed shorts. His basement is cluttered with beer guzzler helmets and deer antlers, his bedroom closet with his late father’s suits, with which he can’t bear to part.
As the guys giddily rummage through Cory’s belongings, the scene could be straight out of the makeover show’s original run 15 years ago. Until Karamo Brown, the culture expert, discovers Cory...

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from the entirety of Netflix’s series “Dark.”]
Netflix’s German supernatural mystery thriller doesn’t fit neatly into any puzzle box, but it sure is addictive and intriguing. Initially built around the case of a missing boy in Winden, “Dark” quickly bursts through the confines of the small town — not by reaching beyond its borders, but beyond its time. The curious time travel element, however, is a tricky one, and two warring forces are trying to control it. Unfortunately, it seems that many young boys have been caught in the middle.
The time travel occurs in 33-year increments, which creates a curious connection with Winden’s past, present, and future. In particular, viewers have gotten to know the young, middle-aged, and older versions of the same characters that hail from a few major families. Trying to keep the various surnames, generations, and each person’s secrets straight is difficult enough, but throw in a kidnapping priest, arcane references,...

Netflix has announced the cast of its reboot of Bravo’s 2003 hit series, “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy,” featuring five new stand-out personalities. The group will serve as a modernized Fab 5, finding new faces to revitalize the show with a political agenda (and current food trends, of course).
Bobby Berk will lead in all things design, Karamo Brown will serve as culture expert, Antoni Porowski, former Fab 5-member Ted Allen’s personal chef, will handle everything food and wine, Tan France will be the show’s fashion guru, and stylist/“Gay of Thrones” host Jonathan Van Ness is, of course, there to share his knowledge on personal grooming. (Van Ness actually shot the series last summer, while “Gay of Thrones” was also in production.)

These days, two of the only forces keeping live TV viewing alive are “Game of Thrones” and sports. On a week to week basis, there are few topics that are guaranteed to generate a conversation quicker and provide an easier shorthand for making friends or small talk than how the Yankees are hitting or what’s up with the Lannisters.
While incredibly lucrative contracts are being built on the backs of live sporting events, be it the Olympics or regional deals for sports like baseball and basketball, there’s a reason that these kinds of spectacles get eyeballs. Over the past few years, for people who aren’t big sports fans, “Game of Thrones” has become the analog to generate the same kinds of conversations among those don’t necessarily care about whether Paul George and Russell Westbrook are going to have any on-court chemistry next year.

HBO’s security continues to be attacked online — this time, by a so-called security group.
Late Wednesday night, the notorious hacking group OurMine sent messages over HBO’s official Twitter and Facebook accounts that read:
“Hi, OurMine are here, we are just testing your security ,HBO team please contact us to upgrade the security – ourmine .org -> Contact”
OurMine is well-known for infiltrating big-name accounts. In the past, the organization has taken over the social media accounts of Netflix, Marvel, and Google. They’ve hacked into YouTube, as well as other celebrity accounts.
During Wednesday night’s breach, they accessed accounts for “Game of Thrones,” “The Leftovers,” “Silicon Valley,” “Veep,” “Last Week Tonight,” “Girls,” “Ballers,” “The Knick,” “The Comeback,” “Real Sports,” “Looking,” “Vinyl,” “Outcast,” “Any Given Wednesday,” Cinemax, HBO Docs, HBOboxing, HBO Now, HBO Now Help, HBOGo Help, and HBO Careers.

“Moulin Rouge” or “The Mighty Ducks”? That was one of the toughest decisions being made Sunday night at the Funny or Die offices in Los Angeles, where the cast and crew behind the “Game of Thrones” recap series “Gay of Thrones” had gathered, as they had for the past four weeks this summer, to watch the HBO blockbuster drama and (lovingly) tear it apart.
By 5 p.m. the following day, the latest installment was online — an awe-inspiring turnaround, given the Emmy-nominated series’s dense implementation of clips, visual jokes and actor-driven improv, cut down to a tight runtime that rarely exceeds five minutes.

Another episode of “Game of Thrones” has leaked online, but even in this age of piracy and bootleg viewing, the show’s ratings are getting stronger with each episode.
Two weeks ago, an Indian distributor named Star leaked the season’s fourth episode titled, “The Spoils of War.” Despite the leak’s widespread availability, the episode drew 10.2 million viewers, which gave “Game of Thrones” its highest ratings ever at the time. Similarly, a separate HBO hack had leaked a script to an early episode that did not seem to diminish viewers’ appetite for the fantasy drama.
Now, it appears that yet another episode has leaked online, albeit accidentally, when this upcoming Sunday’s episode was published by a third-party vendor.
