Beyoncé‘s name has been in the news a lot these last few months. Her documentary “Renaissance: A Film By Beyoncé” premiered in theaters, she launched her own hair care line, she had the industry buzzing about if she would attend the Met Gala, social media marked the 10th anniversary of her sister’s elevator fight with Jay-Z, and Bey dropped her eighth studio album titled Cowboy Carter.

The first project to launch the partnership is “aespa: World Tour” in cinemas, a special cinematic presentation capturing the group’s global tour, which will screen in more than 45 countries on April 24 and 27. The additional three titles will be announced throughout the year.

AMC CEO Adam Aron can’t thank Taylor Swift and Beyoncé enough.
AMC Entertainment reported its Q4 earnings on Wednesday, February 28, with the theater chain seeing revenue growth of double digits in the quarter. Aron credited all of that growth — “literally, all of it,” Aron stressed — to AMC itself distributing both “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” and “Renaissance: A Film By Beyoncé.” It did this despite box office being down on the whole across the industry in the fourth quarter of the year.
“These two movies added greatly to movie theatre ticket sales across our entire industry, as just these two films represented fully one ninth of the complete fourth quarter domestic industry-wide box office,” Aron said in a statement. “This is a stunning result given that neither of these films were on anyone’s drawing board until mid-year, and that they were the first movies ever distributed by AMC in our entire 103-year history.

Japanese cinema has achieved great heights through all eras of the medium. This weekend, two of the country’s giants — 82-year-old Hayao Miyazaki and 69-year-old Godzilla — came out of local retirement with sleeper hits.
GKids opened Miyazaki’s “The Boy and the Heron” to #1 and Toho Releasing saw “Godzilla Minus One” take #3 in its second week. Both distributors smartly chose playtimes when top studios avoided releasing new films and when those in play provided less competition.
The weekend also saw the impressive debuts of three specialized titles. Led by Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things” (Searchlight) with the fall’s top platform showing, Ava DuVernay’s “Origin” (Neon) began its one-week qualifying run along with Wim Wenders’ documentary “Anselm.”
The weekend total of $71 million isn’t impressive on its own, but it represents an huge improvement from last year’s $38 million and keeps hopes alive for a $9 billion 2023. Year to date remains up 23 percent,...

Japanese films have done well in North American in recent years, particularly Anime, but for the first time ever, Japanese productions took up two spots in the top three at the box office. Read on for the weekend box office report.
While the popularity of Anime has been growing, there’s no denying that the godfather of the phenomenon has to be Oscar winner Hayao Miyazaki (“Spirited Away”), whose movies have been released for many decades here, including Fathom Events regularly giving his full filmography theatrical releases.
Miyazaki’s latest Anime is “The Boy and the Heron,” which opened in Japan earlier this year with very little advance marketing before having its North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival back in September. It also platformed in New York and L.A. a few weeks back, building up positive reviews with 96% on Rotten Tomatoes.

This past weekend was a bit erratic with a few movies doing surprisingly better than others, but this weekend, there’s really only one new wide release, as much of December’s big holiday releases don’t hit until next week. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
The one wide release is Gkids’ release of Hayao Miyazaki‘s latest animated feature, “The Boy and the Heron,” which has been playing in select cities but will get a nationwide release into roughly 1,800 theaters in both subtitled and dubbed versions, the latter often being the chosen format for parents with young kids. Miyazaki always gets amazing Western voice casts, this one including Robert Pattinson, Christian Bale, Mark Hamill, Willem Dafoe and many more.

The weekend may belong to Beyoncé, but the King of the Monsters made his presence known in a big way. "Godzilla Minus One" stomped into theaters over the weekend, and partially thanks to downright rapturous word of mouth for Toho's latest kaiju flick, the film far exceeded expectations. So much so that it trailed only "Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé" ($21 million) and "The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes" ($14.5 million) to take the number three spot on the charts.
Director Takashi Yamazaki's new "Godzilla" film opened to $11 million domestically, per The Numbers. That was well beyond what analysts had been predicting heading into the weekend, which is good news all around. The movie had already opened overseas and has since amassed $23 million from international markets. Its total now stands at $34 million worldwide. Not bad for a movie with a $15 million price tag (before marketing). Granted, production...

Last weekend saw a variety of new films open at the box office: Bollywood gangster drama 'Animal', 'Trolls Band Together', two concerts in 'Andre Rieu's White Christmas' and 'Renaissance: A Film By Beyonce', and Japan's Godzilla Minus One. Yet it was 'The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes', in its third frame, that drew the largest audience, surpassing last weekend's no. 1, 'Napoleon'.

The first weekend in December is often a dead zone and this year it it was headed for rock bottom with abysmal results for two prime Disney films. Instead, it’s the best-grossing weekend for this date since 2017. And how we got there proves out what we’ve learned in 2023: Nontraditional titles with fervent fanbases are the new path to exhibition success.
“Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé” (AMC Theatres) is #1 with $21 million; also in the top 10 this week are “Godzilla Minus One” (Toho) with $11 million, India’s “Animal” (Cinegalaxy) with $6 million, and “The Shift” (Angel) with $4.3 million. As major players vacate the release calendar, outside forces are eager to fill the gap.
“Renaissance” is a far cry from “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour,” which opened to $93 million, but it stands out as an opening for this date. While it shows that Swift is a unique draw (and the limited...

2023 has become the year of the concert movie, with "Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé" being the second release in the space of a few months to debut at the top of the box office. Not only did "Renaissance" earn a rare A+ CinemaScore based on audience exit polling and an even rarer 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes (as of this writing), it has also lit up the usually quiet post-Thanksgiving weekend.
Like "Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour," Beyoncé's big-screen extravaganza has been brought to theaters through a direct deal with AMC Theatres Distribution, cutting out the middleman of a major studio distributor. The exhibitor began soliciting films from independent filmmakers back in 2010 through the AMC Independent program, but has recently grown more ambitious and, in doing so, ruffled a few feathers in Hollywood. “Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé” is taking over the box office after grossing $11.5 million on its opening day from 2,539 locations, a figure that includes a strong $5.1 million in Thursday previews. Putting that next to the massive October debut of “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour,” it’s shaping up to be the first year on record that two concert documentaries have opened at the top of domestic charts.
“Renaissance” isn’t expecting to match up to the white-hot fan frenzy that met “The Eras Tour,” which scored $92 million in its domestic opening and has now surpassed $250 million worldwide. But the epic-length film, which documents Beyoncé’s recent Renaissance world tour, is still looking at a substantial debut north of $20 million — an impressive figure for a concert doc. Like “The Eras Tour,” “Renaissance” is also being distributed by AMC Theatres in a deal brokered between the headliner musician and the exhibitor — meaning...

Beyoncé’s new concert film is delivering the goods at the box office, where it’s headed for the biggest early December opening in two decades.
Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé — which Beyoncé wrote, directed and produced — could now earn $21 million to $24 million in its debut after it was graced with glowing reviews and a coveted A+ CinemaScore. The film earned $11.5 million on Friday, including $5 million in Thursday previews
Distributor AMC Theatres — also home of blockbuster Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour — is remaining more conservative in suggesting a $20 million opening.
More than 70 percent of Friday’s audience was female, while 50 percent of the audience were Black moviegoers, in a win for diverse programming.
The weekend after Thanksgiving is notoriously sluggish, and Renaissance is a welcome gift for exhibitors. To date, the biggest opening for the first weekend of December belongs to Tom Cruise’s The Last Samurai ($24.3 million), not adjusted for inflation.

Queen Bey has arrived on the box office stage.
Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé — which Beyoncé wrote, directed and produced — started off its run on the big screen Thursday night with a better-than-expected $5 million in North American previews.
The concert movie is tracking for a debut in the $20 million range, which would mark the biggest opening for the first weekend of December. It should also top this weekend’s chart. And with a perfect 100 percent critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes and a near-perfect 99 percent audience score, Renaissance come in ahead of expectations.

Beyoncé surprised fans with a new song, “My House,” to celebrate the release of her new concert film Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé on Friday.
It’s the Grammy-winning singer’s first new music since she dropped her album Renaissance last year. Following the song’s release, Apple Music wrote on its official Instagram, “A gift from the queen for the opening weekend of the Renaissance film. Listen now to @beyonce’s new track ‘My House.'”
It’s not only been a busy week for Beyoncé, including her film’s Los Angeles and London premieres, but it’s been a busy, record-breaking year for the singer.
Earlier this year, at the Grammy Awards in February, Beyoncé set a new record as the artist with the most Grammy wins of all time. At the 2023 ceremony, she took home awards for best dance/electronic music album, best dance/electronic recording, best...

Box Office: Beyoncé’s ‘Renaissance’ Takes on ‘Hunger Games’ Prequel With Estimated $20 Million Debut
Queen Bey is about to take on the box office.
“Renaissance,” a concert film written, directed and produced by Beyoncé, is expected to bring in $17 million to $20 million in its opening weekend. The film will play in approximately 2,539 domestic locations, as well as 94 international territories, including Mexico, the U.K., South Africa, Kenya, Australia and Germany. Globally, the film is targeting $30 million to $40 million in its first weekend.
Like Taylor Swift’s “The Eras Tour,” which ignited the box office in October with $92 million domestically and has generated $250 million worldwide to date, “Renaissance” is unique because it’s being distributed by the exhibitor AMC Theatres rather than a traditional studio.
Based on early estimates and pre-sales, “Renaissance” will be more comparable to concert docs like Michael Jackson’s “This Is It,” which debuted to $23 million in 2009, and “Justin Bieber: Never Say Never,” which opened to $29.5 million in 2011, not adjusted for inflation.

For months, it seemed near certain that domestic box office for 2023 would surpass $9 billion — even after strike-related delays meant losing as much as $500 million in potential gross. To be sure, $9 billion wasn’t a crazy goal; it represents 22 percent above 2022, but far below the glory days of 2018 and 2019. Both years surpassed $11 billion at ticket prices about 15 percent lower than now.
After a very disappointing November, crossing $9 billion becomes a nail-biter. This month’s total will be about $560 million, 11 percent down from $628 million last year.
Leading the shortfall are “The Marvels” and “Wish,” Disney’s two most recent disappointments. “Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes” (Lionsgate) will just reach $100 million for the month. Other Novembers saw movies gross more than $200 million like last year’s “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” or “Frozen” and “Thor: Ragnarok” in 2017.
That leaves year-to-date box office at $8.17 billion, with $830 million more needed to reach $9 billion.

That leaves year-to-date box office at $8.17 billion, with $830 million more needed to reach $9 billion.

It’s been 470 calendar days since Beyoncé gave her stans an inkling that a Renaissance visual album was coming. In the year following the release of her seventh studio album, the BeyHive relied on their improvisational skills to keep them engaged throughout its nontraditional rollout. They made viral dance challenges to “Cuff It” on TikTok; tried to replicate Bey’s melismatic bridge from “Virgo’s Groove”; and when the came time for everybody to be “on mute” during the “Energy” segment of Renaissance World Tour shows, cities across the world...

Jeff Nichols’ “The Bikeriders” is now looking for a new home.
The 1960s motorcycle gang crime drama from producer and financier New Regency was meant to be distributed through Disney/20th Century Studios but is now being shopped by New Regency to other studios and streamers, IndieWire can confirm. The film was originally planned to be released December 1 following a Telluride premiere but was postponed and taken off the calendar back in October because actors were unable to promote the film during the now-concluded SAG-AFTRA strike.
New Regency still believes in the movie and isn’t dumping it altogether, but having fully financed and produced, they’re carrying the full financial burden of it and want it to succeed. An individual with knowledge tells IndieWire that New Regency is being strategic and is hoping for a different release date or platform to serve it better.

Per the Academy’s bylaws, the Documentary Branch defines a documentary film as “a theatrically released nonfiction motion picture dealing creatively with cultural, artistic, historical, social, scientific, economic or other subjects. It may be photographed in actual occurrence, or may employ partial reenactment, stock footage, stills, animation, stop-motion or other techniques, as long as the emphasis is on fact and not on fiction.”
