Hulu’s list of new releases for May 2024 is missing a certain amount of original series firepower. In the place of a blockbuster like The Handmaid’s Tale or Shōgun, however, is some content diversity.
The first of the month sees the premiere of four-episode British series Shardlake. This mystery drama takes place during the reign of Henry VIII and features none other than Thomas Cromwell (Sean Bean) investigating a murder. Other series of note this month include the Korean drama Uncle Samsik on May 15.
Movies are bit more interesting on Hulu in May. Teen comedy Prom Dates premieres on May 3. That will be followed by the 2023 Adam Drive film Ferrari on May 24. Before all that though is the real heavy hitter. You can watch Austin Butler’s acclaimed performance as The King in Elvis as early as May 1. But get to it quick before the Baz Luhrmann film departs on...

The month is a prime time to have Disney+, what with the ongoing and buzzy success of “X-Men 97” and upcoming “Marvel Studios’ Assembled” going behind the scenes of the reboot series. May is of course the month of Star Wars, and the House of Mouse will celebrate with “Star Wars: Tales of the Empire” on May 4. Disney is also home to BBC America’s “Doctor Who,” which returns for a highly-anticipated 14th season with Ncuti Gatwa stepping into the Tardis as the new Doctor (he stepped into the role in December 2023 as part of the series’ beloved Christmas special tradition).

Exclusive: In a competitive situation with multiple studios bidding, 20th Century Studios has reeled in theatrical distribution rights to Imagine Entertainment’s thriller Whalefall, based on the recently published novel by bestseller Daniel Kraus.
Aboard to co-write, direct, and produce the film is Brian Duffield, who has a strong relationship with 20th President Steve Asbell and his team, following their work together on the acclaimed sci-fi thriller No One Will Save You. Imagine snapped the book up for development in a pre-emptive film rights deal last summer, as we were first to report.
Published last summer by MTV Books, an imprint of Simon & Schuster, Whalefall is described as The Martian meets 127 Hours. The book is about a scuba diver in search of his deceased father’s remains who gets swallowed by an eighty-foot, sixty-ton sperm whale and has only one hour to escape before his oxygen runs out. It’s a fairly big month on Prime Video in March, at least compared to the other streaming service offerings! There are are two major films arriving on Amazon’s streamer. The first is a remake of the Patrick Swayze action classic Road House. Stepping into the late Swayze’s shoes? A crazy-jacked Jake Gyllenhaal, who really seemed to want to go the extra mile for this project.
The other big film coming to Prime Video is Ricky Stanicky, and the plot sounds really fun! It follows three friends who have always blamed their mistakes on an imaginary guy called Ricky Stanicky. When they have to finally introduce people to Stanicky, they decide to hire a washed-up actor (John Cena) to impersonate him. Hilarity ensues, maybe? But if neither of those make your watchlist, there’s also the return of the animated hit series Invincible.

Amazon MGM‘s Play Dirty is ready to announce its female lead for director Shane Black’s upcoming film. Joining Mark Wahlberg for Black’s crime thriller is Rosa Salazar. Lakeith Stanfield also stars, with a script written by Black, Anthony Bagarozzi, and Chuck Mondry.
According to Deadline‘s exclusive report, Play Dirty focuses on the “professional thief Parker (Wahlberg), who, after being double-crossed and left for dead, sees his hunt for revenge bring with it a shot at the biggest heist of his career. But even with the help of his partner, actor-slash-con artist Grofield (Stanfield), he’ll still need to outsmart a South American dictator, the New York mob, and the world’s richest man if he hopes to stay alive.”
Rosa Salazar’s Play Dirty role remains a mystery. However, the film is inspired by Donald E Westlake’s Parker crime novels, written under the pseudonym Richard Stark.

Divergent author Veronica Roth is opening up about the film adaptation of her book series and the final film that never got made.
In a new interview, Roth says she was at “peace” with the fourth film of The Divergent Series getting scrapped. Lionsgate split Roth’s third book into two films for a grand finale to the franchise titling it Ascendent, but the film never saw the light of day.
“I mean, breaking things in two was all the rage at the time. That was why that decision was made,” Roth said in an interview with People. “But at that point, I think I always felt peace about it just because I knew the movies were taking a different track than the books, and if you change the lead-up, you change the ending. So I kind of felt like at that point… I feel like that third movie, I don’t know,...

Actor Kate Winslet portrayed a villain for the first time in her career by starring in Divergent. Although she hated the character, she admitted that she found a thrill in her powerful role.
Kate Winslet was excited about the idea of playing a powerful character Kate Winslet | Samir Hussein/WireImage
Winslet was more than intrigued by the role she was offered in Divergent. Her character Jeanine being so vile was one of the main reasons she decided to contribute to the sci-fi franchise.
“The novelty of that was definitely the most thrilling, really, but also playing a character who could be many versions of nasty — there is lot that is sinister about her. That, as an actor, provided me with a platform to have a lot of fun and try lots of different things,” she once told Time.
But at the same time, the Titanic star found something alluring about playing a character that powerful.

‘No One Will Save You’ Filmmaker Brian Duffield on the Long Road to His Alien Home Invasion Thriller
No One Will Save You filmmaker Brian Duffield has experienced many twists and turns throughout his 13-year career.
After making the Black List in 2010, he pulled off the same feat in 2011 with his Jane Got a Gun spec script, which went on to endure one of the most dramatic journeys to the big screen in recent memory. In 2013, Duffield was hired to write the dystopian sci-fi film Insurgent, the sequel to Divergent (2014), and that became one of the assignments that helped him realize that he was better suited for writing on spec. In 2014, Duffield made the Black List again for his spec The Babysitter, and his produced spec scripts now include Jane Got a Gun (2015), The Babysitter (2017), Underwater (2020), Love and Monsters (2020) and No One Will Save You (2023).

Bury the Bride, which recently debuted as a Tubi Original, is the second film from director Spider One and co-writer Krsy Fox after last year’s Allegoria. Spider One, for those not into the industrial metal scene, is the singer and only consistent member of the band Powerman 5000; and probably more important to his expansion into filmmaking, he’s Rob Zombie’s younger brother.
And Bury the Bride certainly opens like one of his brother’s films as credits playing over an old-timey love song give way to green-tinted footage of a woman hacking at someone or something just out of sight. And then to a group of women talking about the dick size of someone’s fiance while another tries, and loudly announces her failure,...

When Divergent was first announced, it had all the ingredients to become a successful franchise. The eponymous book that the film was based on had a strong following. The cast had star names like Shailene Woodley and Kate Winslet and interesting newcomers like Theo James. Furthermore, Lionsgate (the film’s distribution company) had seen that Young Adult dystopian stories could find massive success. Previously, the studio hit a huge win with The Hunger Games movies. So when the Divergent franchise fizzled out, it was a shock to many people, including the actors.

When Miles Teller and Shailene Woodley were cast to portray romantic interests in The Spectacular Now, they had no idea they’d form such a strong relationship off-screen. But working on the small film would spark the formation of a close friendship that still persists today. The actors have both stated multiple times that they truly enjoy working together and spending time together outside of work. But did they think they’d hit it off so well when they first met? Teller once gave his genuine first impression of Woodley.

Shailene Woodley recently put down roots in Los Angeles by purchasing a beautiful home in the Hollywood Hills. But it wasn’t so long ago that the actor was embracing a more nomadic lifestyle. Long-time fans of Woodley know that in her 20s, the Three Women actor was fond of couch-surfing. In between filming projects, she’d often crash at her friends’ places all over the world. And it seems like Miles Teller wasn’t afraid to razz her a bit for it.

If there's one thing Damien Chazelle knows how to do, it's an ending. In the heart-rending denouement of "La La Land" we're shown everything Ryan Gosling's Seb and Emma Stone's Mia could have been, before a subtle nod between the two signals a solemn, bittersweet acceptance of their actual circumstances. It's a finale full of false climaxes that explore every possibility to add that much more finality to the true ending.
Before that 2016 musical drama made us all cry, Chazelle had already proven his talent for an emotionally satisfying ending with his breakout 2014 effort, "Whiplash." Drawing on the filmmaker's own experiences of playing in a high school jazz band, the film tells the story of Andrew Neiman (Miles Teller), a drum student at a prestigious New York music academy who will seemingly stop at nothing to become the next Buddy Rich. Throughout the film, he's berated and abused by his instructor,...

Film fans love to speculate on what canceled movie productions would have become. What would it have been like to see Steven Spielberg's science fiction epic "Robopocalypse," Quentin Tarantino's Vega Brothers movie, Stanley Kubrick's ambitious "Napoleon" biopic, or Alejandro Jodorowsky's "Dune" adaptation? Would they be everything fans imagined them to be? Or crushing disappointments? While it's fun to speculate, we can't put our faith into something that doesn't exist. Likely, these films wouldn't have lived up to fans' massive expectations.

Warner Bros. Discovery has had a rough go of it recently. The newly-formed mega corporation’s decision to callously prune HBO Max’s servers of hours of content has led to mountains of bad PR and billions of dollars in market cap losses. Suffice it to say, a jam-packed list of new HBO Max releases for September 2022 would provide some welcome relief for the “House of the House of the Dragon.”
Unfortunately, HBO Max’s new releases this month are uncommonly light. It’s impossible to say whether this is the result of more Wbd meddling or simply some bad scheduling luck but either way it’s not going to make any executives’ seats less warm. There are only a handful of notable originals this month, led by season 2 of the Spanish language comedy Los Espookys on Sept. 16. That is joined by a pair of documentaries, Escape from Kabul on Sept.

Chino Moya’s debut is a haunting trilogy of stories that have totalitarianism in their surrealist, satirical sights
A riptide of surrealism runs through Chino Moya’s ambitious debut feature, a fantasy suite of tales that don’t so much interlock as butt into one another and blurt out alarming, dreamlike correspondences.

Rlje Films and the horror streaming service Shudder have acquired the North American rights to “Seance,” a supernatural horror film starring Suki Waterhouse.
“Seance” is the feature-length directorial debut of Simon Barrett, who wrote the acclaimed horror films “You’re Next” and “The Guest.”
The film stars Waterhouse as the new girl at the prestigious Edelvine Academy for Girls. Soon after her arrival, six girls invite her to join them in a late-night ritual, calling forth the spirit of a dead former student who reportedly haunts their halls. But before morning, one of the girls is dead, leaving the others wondering what they may have awakened.
Rlje Films will release “Seance” in theaters, on demand and on digital on May 21, and Shudder will then premiere the film on its platform later this year. Shudder also picked up rights to the film for the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand.

How far would you go for love, even if it meant traversing a monster-infested world that’s been ravaged by an apocalypse? In the first trailer for “Love and Monsters,” Dylan O’Brien won’t let any tentacled creeps get in his way.
“Love and Monsters” is a sci-fi, adventure comedy starring O’Brien as a kid living underground since the Monsterpocalypse destroyed much of humanity, and when he learns that his high school girlfriend (Jessica Henwick) is alive at a colony more than 80 miles away, he decides to brave the unknown and reunite with her. Along the way he manages to hide him and a dog from a giant gaping mouth of a monster and explode another with a grenade. That is, if he can trust his instincts.
“What if I have terrible instincts,” he asks his guide, played by Michael Rooker. “You’ll die,” he replies.

Love and Monsters, another would-be blockbuster that’s bypassing theaters for VOD, is arriving at your home quite soon, as evidenced by the release of the film’s first trailer.
If there’s one thing that the often-visited genre of post-apocalyptic sci-fi cinema needs, it’s a wholesome romance between two young star-crossed lovers. Someone at Paramount realized this, and, this past October, quickly went into development on the project in question, tapping headliners in Dylan O’Brien (The Maze Runner) and Jessica Henwick (Iron Fist).
Michael Matthews directed the picture, having come off his feature debut, the 2017 South African western-style thriller, Five Fingers for Merseilles. He worked off a screenplay by Brian Duffield (Insurgent) and Matthew Robinson (Dora and the Lost City of Gold), based on a story by Duffield.
With that set, check out the Love and Monsters trailer just below.

Divergent—both the 2011 book and the 2014 film—belongs to a simpler time. A time when our fictional dystopias weren’t in such close competition with our real-life dystopia. If you’d like to spend a few hours escaping into that simpler time, Divergent book author Veronica Roth just recorded a special commentary track to accompany the first Divergent movie, and it’s filled with insight into the adaptation process. Generally, it’s just a nice way to pretend like you are at the movie theater (remember movie theaters?), watching a movie with some friends (remember friends?)—except you don’t have to whisper.
Topics discussed include casting Shailene Woodley in the role of protagonist Tris, Ashley Judd’s dogs, and why certain decisions were made as these bestselling books were adapted into blockbuster movies. Interestingly, Roth mentions that the movie series became more science fiction over time as an attempt...

Best known for playing Captain Boomerang in “Suicide Squad,” Jai Courtney first gained attention in 2010 portraying Varro on Starz’s “Spartacus: Blood and Sand.” Since then, the Aussie actor has appeared in “Jack Reacher” and “A Good Day to Die Hard,” followed by “Divergent” and its sequel, “Insurgent.”
He’ll next be seen in “Stateless” as Cam Sanford, a guard at an immigration detention center in the Australian desert. Co-created by Cate Blanchett (who plays the wife of a cult leader) and inspired by true events, the eight-episode series revolves around a group of people at the detention center whose lives become intertwined, including an Australian resident with mental illness (Yvonne Strahovski) being held at the center. After premiering on Australian television in March, “Stateless” hits Netflix on July 8.
