Captain Rachel Garrett was the commanding officer of the U.S.S. Enterprise-c, a ship that infamously met a grisly fate. In the 1990 "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "Yesterday's Enterprise" -- often called one of the best episodes of the show -- the once-thought-destroyed Enterprise-c flew threw a time portal, landing itself 20 years in the future, smack in the middle of the 24th century timeline of "Next Generation." It seems, however, that when the Enterprise-c vanished from its timeline 20 years ago, it also exited a crucial battle with the Romulans. The ship's disappearance negatively changed the outcome of the battle and led to a decades-long war. The Enterprise-d of "Next Generation," thanks to causality, was instantly transformed into a stern warship, one of the last surviving fighting forces in a failing Federation military.

Film co-productions between Australia and India received a significant double boost this week with the ratification of a treaty that was proposed last year and the Indian government’s major enhancement of filming incentives.
An Australian delegation is attending the ongoing International Film Festival of India (Iffi), Goa and the concurrent film market, Film Bazaar. Australian producer Helen Leake is on the Iffi international competition jury and documentary “Brand Bollywood Downunder” by Indian origin Australian filmmaker Anupam Sharma, who also serves as director of the Australia India Film Council, is playing at the festival.
“Screen Australia is delighted that the Australian-Indian treaty is now in force. The treaty provides a framework and opportunity for greater creative collaboration between Australia and India. It will allow producers from both countries to share resources and the risk of financing a film and will provide access to new markets and audiences,” a spokesperson from Screen Australia told Variety.

For much of Karim Amer’s reliably efficient documentary Defiant we follow Dmytro Kuleba, Minister of Foreign Affairs in Ukraine. Following Russia’s invasion in February 2022, Kuleba and other members of The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine were quickly thrown into their own corners of the war. Kuleba’s responsibility––among others––is garnering support from allies abroad. One of the tasks of Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereschuk is bolstering humanitarian efforts domestically, in direct reaction to attacks by the enemies in the eastern regions of the country.
There are harrowing scenes captured here. Consider one in which a mother realizes the body of her son lays before her by recognizing his sneaker. Or another wherein Vereschuk matter-of-factly mentions that she has not seen her child in months because of the war and requirements of her post. Footage from cell phones, security cameras, and the like capture bombings of...

Woodstock Film Festival has added Tony Goldwyn’s comedy drama “Ezra,” starring Bobby Cannavale and Robert De Niro to its 2023 lineup.
In the film, which made its world premiere earlier this month at the Toronto Intl. Film Festival, Cannavale stars as Max, a stand up comic who after recently blowing up his career and marriage is living with his father Stan (De Niro). When Max’s autistic son Ezra is expelled from yet another school, Max makes the controversial decision to take him on a cross-country road trip.
In addition to Cannavale and De Niro, “Ezra” stars Rose Byrne, Vera Farmiga, Whoopi Goldberg and Rainn Wilson. (Mister Smith Entertainment and CAA are handling sales.)
“I am so excited that the Woodstock Film Festival chose to screen ‘Ezra,'” says Goldwyn. “Woodstock is one of the coolest festivals in the country for a filmmaker. After such an enthusiastic reception at TIFF last week,...

Karim Amer has made documentaries about seismic geopolitical events as they unfolded before. In the Oscar-nominated documentary The Square — which he produced — footage of the chaos and carnage in Cairo’s Tahrir Square helped offer an uniquely immersive account of the Egyptian Revolution of 2011.
But nothing he’d made previously compares to Defiant, premiering in Toronto on Sep. 9 and capturing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine from the unique perspective of key decision makers in Kiev — including minister of foreign affairs Dmytro Kuleba — politicians suddenly and unexpectedly thrust into a wartime government.
“The stakes are so high, because it’s the largest conflict we’ve seen since WWII and anything could happen,” says Amer, who swapped his producer hat for director, teaming up with longtime producer Mike Lerner (The Square, Hell and Back Again) and Odessa Rae, a newly-minted Oscar-winner for Navalny.
Access is absolute key for a film like Defiant,...
