A Neat Movie That Does The Princesses Somewhat Right
jeremycrimsonfox19 August 2023
Rapunzel Snow White, Tiana Moana, and Ariel are about to have an adventure, as Gaston, the hunter from Beauty and the Beast, has managed to kidnap Ariel's father, King Triton, and holds him in a castle where he wants to claim his trident, held by the rulers of Atlantica, and has stolen a lot of riches and relics, including the Magic Mirror that once belong to the evil queen that was vanquished by the Seven Dwarves. Soon, Ariel and the other four princesses are summoned to Gaston's castle as part of a contest between the hunter and King Triton, where if he wins, he not only gets the trident, but also gains rule over the oceans.

A neat Lego special, it basically does right what Disney has failed to do with their live action remakes (so maybe they should take notes of this special, if they are not too busy with their next remake and box office flop). Most of the original VAs are back (Jodi Benson voicing Ariel, who is in her original animated incarnation, Mandy Moore as Rapunzel, even Richard White is brought back to voice Gaston) while bringing in other VAs to voice characters whose original VAs are either unavailable or deceassed (like Jim Cummings, who has voiced a lot of Disney characters, his most prominent being Pete from Mickey Mouse, voicing King Triton, Corey Burton voices the Magic Mirror, and there are even surprise appearance by other characters, some not from the Disney Princess movies).

The special is a good one. It has the five princesses teaming up to take on Gaston (I know his fate in the movie he is from, but Lego shorts like this tend to be their own thing and are not connected to the films or other media they are based on). The princesses are done well, even though the special adds some quirks they didn't have (even Snow White, who seems to have learned her lesson from what happened to her, although the special has made her a little crazy to a point where she wields an axe, which is used as a gag, making her somewhat out of character), and the voice acting can be hit or miss, but the story is exciting and teaches a good moral.

Not for Everyone, But a Pretty Great Lego Short

Warning: Spoilers
So Ariel, Tiana, Rapunzel, Snow White and Moana have to complete 3 challenges to save King Triton, clear Gaston's curses from their kingdoms, and prevent Gaston from claiming Triton's trident. Gaston has already claimed many kingdoms, and supposedly with the trident, he will rule all land and sea.

There's a lot to like in this special. Snow White is actually wild in this - she can speak every animal language and wields a freaking axe like a maniac which was pretty hilarious! Tiana is straight up mood, I love her so much. Mandy Moore literally IS Rapunzel at this point so - as expected - she kills it. Ariel and Moana teaming up was pretty cool. I also like how Iago the Parrot is captain of a pirate crew and loots the Magic Carpet.

It's a pretty fun adventure, some of the fights and gimmicks work better than others. On Iago's ship, Moana gets completely surrounded by sword wielding pirates. But then she just escapes without issues, steals Mr. Smee's broom and beats everyone silly. Snow White, Tiana and Rapunzel also get surrounded by wolves in the Dark Forest. But Snow White speaks wolf and just befriends them all. That's pretty much how every encounter goes. Also the princesses make peace with dragon form Maleficent to defeat Gaston which is...interesting? I appreciate how the princesses face male and female enemies - something about them having hands rated E for everyone puts a smile on my face. At the same time, it's great that the ladies face conquer of their tests with teamwork, ingenuity, empathy, and diplomacy instead of brute forcing their way through everything. It's a great message to send.

Overall I enjoyed it. I thought Moana was a little underused. She seems very tame and muted in this special, but I think it might be because she doesn't have as much natural chemistry with other characters as she does with Maui in her own movie (same as Wreck-It Ralph 2). I didn't think Gaston really fit as the powerful Big Bad against these 5, but he was okay I guess.

It's something fun to turn your brain off and smile to. Plus it's great to see some of my favorite princesses team up.

7/10.

Ok but mediocre

Warning: Spoilers
This short is kinda just okay. I like the animation and VAs, Snow White is super enjoyable and I love any scene with her ax, Gaston is enjoyable as well and Maleficent looks awesome.... that's about it. The story is a typical journey to save someone, and you know Triton is gonna be saved before you even watch the short. The climax is laughably cheesy. What happens in it? Gaston gets a Dragon resembling Maleficent to fight off the Princesses. The Princesses find out Maleficent has a hole in her wing and help fix it. WhAt HaPpEnS nExT???? Maleficent turns against Gaston because Gaston doesn't give a fluff about her and then kills him. Even if you ignore the climax, the short itself is just chessyness cranked up to the max.

Also, this isn't a problem and is just a nitpick, but Belle should've been in the short. Belle knows Gaston which would've helped the others defeat Gaston early, but nah.

Also, another nitpick I have this doesn't even look like a LEGO production and looks more like a Playmobil production. If it was, it would still be better then the awful PlayMobil movie.

Alright but could've toned down the cheesyness.

Not as great as one might hope for
Sherrill77710 November 2023
Obviously this movies is aimed at children, but that's really no excuse for poor storytelling. The story revolves around 5 classic female heroes (they aren't all princesses, but that's what Disney wants to label them as, so...) who must solve 'quests' to save the day. But the puzzles aren't solvable except through coincidences and illogic (such as Ariel having a key she keeps in her hair?!?). The princesses don't have the same character or personality as in the movies or otherwise don't follow their own rules (Snow White has an invincible mech armor?!?) This would be forgivable if the movie were funny, but it really isn't. There are a few jokes, but not terribly great ones. In the end the movie is just...okay. Acceptable for young kids, but only in the sense that this brain rot isn't inappropriate. If possible, find something better to do with your time.

Big thumbs up

Even in the time period where Disney isn't making too great movies, it's awesome to see them make something that is fun, very Disney, and there are jokes that are funny. I'm really looking forward to Wish, and this movie (or TV Special, since it's only 49m according to IMDB) is actually really good.

Gaston wants the trident and tries to drown King Triton to get it, but five of the Disney Princesses - Tiana, Ariel, Moana, Rapunzel, & Snow White! - go on a quest to stop him. Pirates, forests, and even a death trap- this special is awesome! I totally recommend it! Thank you for reading my review.

Funny and Charming
krislyn-seegrist21 August 2023
My daughter (5 yrs) loves this one already. She said it's just a little scary (intense) sometimes but it's ok! She loves seeing all her favorite princesses on an adventure together. I've been enjoying it as well, it's very engaging and has quite a bit of humor. I love that they have some of the original voice actors. I do wish they had included Belle though. It seems strange that Gaston is the villain but Belle isn't in the movie. Maybe they explained that and I just missed it though. Snow White is hilarious! I also enjoyed the random character cameos from different Disney movies. Very fun and charming!

More of This!

I loved it. It was an imaginative take invloving the mutliverse of disney characters. There was more imagination in this short movie than there has been in anything that Disney has produced in like the past 8 eight years. I'm also impressed they got every single voice actor (who was still alive) to reprise their character's voice. I wish this was a series with a bunch of episodes. Please make more like this!

I liked seeing Gaston as an overall villian haha. The message about friendship was a little generic but the other creative parts made up for it. The little twists along the way made it interesting.
