Two years after co-starring in Netflix‘s hit “Red Notice” with Dwayne Johnson and Ryan Reynolds, Gal Gadot is back in the Top 10 charts for the week of August 7 with her action-thriller “Heart of Stone.” Read on for this week’s analysis.
Gadot’s undeniable star power was on full display as “Heart of Stone” only premiered on the streamer this past Friday, and it was able to easily top the English-language list with 33.1 million views worldwide. It was the #1 watched film in most of the Americas (except Canada), Africa, Asia and Europe, and a great start for what should be another Netflix hit. “Red Notice” is famously Netflix’s most-watched movie ever, with 230.9 million global views total, but “Heart of Stone” will give Gadot a good opportunity to show that she doesn’t need the boys to get viewers watching.

It seems appropriate that we start with the TV chart this week, since two returning shows topped the English series list with the second half of the second season of “Lincoln Lawyer” receiving 6.7 million views, followed by “Heartstopper” in second place with 6.1 million views. “Lincoln Lawyer” was the #1 watched show in the United States, Canada, four European countries, as well as Australia and New Zealand, while “Hearstopper” was #1 in Mexico and a few other European countries, including the United Kingdom.
“The Witcher” Season 3 took third place on that chart with 5.4 million views, followed by Season 3 of “Sweet Magnolias” with 2.9 million views. The...

On paper, the idea of a machine affecting the human psyche and turning them into violent zombies seems like an intriguing one for a genre movie. In fact, if you think about it, it would be rather terrifying if something like this actually happens in our world, particularly for those who already live under fascist regimes. Netflix’s latest offering, the Polish science-fiction thriller Soulcatcher, hinges on this idea, but instead of coming up with a subversive, truly affecting science-fiction with a very real horror angle, the movie chooses to follow a very generic way. The result is something that we have already seen so many times in different contexts. It is the same good versus bad, with some predictable twists and standard, well-choreographed action. But nothing more than that. A movie is always a director’s medium of expression, but it is actually sad to see a great idea get squandered by mediocrity.

Directed by Daniel Markowicz, Soulcatcher mixes two themes together and comes out not as smart as it would have liked. Initially, it seemed like it was a ‘man versus technology’ plot, where mankind was fighting to save its own humanity. Later, the film flipped, and it became more like a ‘democracy versus dictatorship’ battle. The two themes are connected quite literally by the metaphor of a machine that can apparently turn humans into violent, psychotic zombies. It was invented with the noble intention of curing cancer, but due to some malfunctions, it turned people into savages. A machine turning against mankind; it sounds like it’s from the very near future, doesn’t it?

Daniel Markowicz brings us an action-thriller movie, Soulcatcher, where big guns go off, and action heroes throw haymakers, whereas brunette femme fatales are infallible with large sniper rifles. There’s also a massive laser pointer-like device that fries people’s brains, and the good guys need to snatch it from the bad ones. In theory, we could say the movie has all the makings of an interesting watch, but the 98-minute runtime proves for the umpteenth time that not every good script translates to a good movie. Starring Piotr Witkowski, Jacek Koman, Jacek Poniedzialek, and Aleskandra Adamska, among others, Soulcatcher pulls out all the stops in the explosions and character designs, but a poorly formulated plot and a severely predictable course of the action draw out all the fun it could’ve offered. Here’s a comprehensive review of Soulcatcher for you to decide whether this Polish action thriller is up your alley or not.

August has arrived, and with it, the last full month of summer-worthy shows and flicks, at least for 2023. From all the summer sensations to food weather, carnival fun and, of course, the lack of school, the streamer’s film slate will update with some appropriate flicks like “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2,” “Eat Pray Love,” “Despicable Me” and “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” respectively.
If you’re one of those who senses the change in the air as soon as the salty summer heat gives way to crisp fall fog, “Heartstopper” Season 2, complete with its cartoon drawings of leaves, waits for you starting August 3. “The Lincoln Lawyer: Season 2 Part 2” concludes the two-part followup to the legal drama starring Manuel Garcia-Rulfo. “Heart of Stone,” a big tentpole film starring Gal Gadot and Jamie Dornan, promises action-lovers a good time.
For those who didn’t get enough of the Depp v.

With its list of new releases for August 2023, Netflix is giving the anime world another shot.
No, we’re not talking about the streamer’s usual anime offerings – which are present this month in the form of Ragnarok season 3 (Aug. 24) and other titles – we’re talking about Netflix’s attempt to make live-action anime adaptations a thing. Following the relative failure of its Cowboy Bebop remake, Netflix is giving it another go, this time with arguably an even bigger anime classic. One Piece will premiere on Aug. 31. Telling the story of beloved straw hat wearing pirate Monkey D. Luffy, this adaptation will attempt to do original creator Eiichiro Oda and his many fans proud.
