An in-name only sequel- it’s been six years since the last S.W.A.T. movie, Firefight, and you Really don’t have to have seen the previous film – or the 2003 original – to appreciate this, the third film in the S.W.A.T. franchise. Yet another take on the Assault on Precinct 13 story model, S.W.A.T.: Under Siege sees a Swat compound come under fire from an international terrorist who relentlessly and violently pursues a mystery man who was apprehended by Seattle Swat after a raid went horribly wrong.
So why now? Why make another S.W.A.T. film now? Maybe it’s because CBS are planning a new TV iteration of the classic series,...

4.8 Extraction
Last week, I wrote about how Eichhorst’s sting could force fans of The Strain to bid farewell to Setrakian. I lamented the loss of this awesome character, but praised the series for the unforgettable way in which Setrakian met his end. I said it was brutal to be forced to say farewell to the aged strigoi hunter, but it is fitting that Setrakian took Eichhorst down with him. Then commenter Steve Crow postulated the warfarin in Setrakian’s system, the same blood thinner the vampire killer used to fatally poison Eichhorst, would dilute the strigoi worms and save Setrakian’s life. I felt Mr. Crow was onto something and celebrated the fact that maybe, just maybe,...

I was a huge fan of the first film in what now looks to be a burgeoning new martial arts film franchise. The Man With the Iron Fists was everything I love about martial arts movie and was obviously a labour of love for its star and Wu_Tang Clan member RZA. Sadly, despite the out-pouring of love from wuxia fans and internet geeks like myself, the film did not perform as well as I’m sure the studio would’ve liked. But that doesn’t stop the franchise from continuing as a direct-to-market series – and so we have The Man With the Iron Fists 2.

This Week in TV News is a compliment to the Week in Review feature, which will now be focused on film news.
AMC has guaranteed two seasons to the prequel companion series of The Walking Dead, as per THR. The announcement was made earlier this week, and comes as somewhat unsurprising news. The Walking Dead continues to be one of the channel’s highest rated shows, with its popularity showing no signs of waning as the show’s fifth season rolls along. In addition, AMC has found similar commercial and critical success with Better Call Saul, its new series that is itself a spinoff of Breaking Bad.
There’s no set title for the series as of yet, and working titles have included Fear The Walking Dead and Cobalt. The first season, much like the show that spawned this spinoff, will consist of six episodes, with creator Robert Kirkman working...

It doesn't yet have the profile of a Netflix or an Amazon, but Sony's online streaming platform Crackle has also been quietly producing its own content for some time. It's home to Jerry Seinfeld's Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee and its first film was Extraction with Danny Glover last year. Now it has the dubious honour of producing the first ever straight-to-digital sequel. David Spade is looking to Crackle for his belated follow-up to 2001's Joe Dirt. The original Joe Dirt is a comedy that sees the titular drifter on the road, ostensibly looking for his parents but gradually adopting a new family of similar misfits. It's basically a lot like The Outlaw Josey Wales but without the shooting or the excellence. It is, shall we say, not greatly loved. with a current rating of 11% at Rotten Tomatoes. The film was a reasonable hit at the box office, however,...

It’s not often we run news stories here on Nerdly but when it involves one of my favourite writer/directors working today there’s absolutely no way I’m not sharing this with you guys. So what’s the news?
Well Tony Giglio, director of one of the best films of last year – Extraction (think of it as the American successor to The Raid) – has returned, as screenwriter, to the franchise which he managed to successfully reboot on DVD and, with his script for the third film, surpass the original movie… I’m talking Death Race. And more specifically Death Race 4.
I’ll let this image, which Giglio tweeted earlier today, do all the talking… And it goes without saying I’m super-excited to see where the franchise is headed after the amazing third film.

Director Kaare Andrews' (Altitude) Cabin Fever: Patient Zero will play in twenty-eight Canadian cities! The film will begin its Canadian launch in Toronto, Ontario, before moving out to more theatres May 29th. This is the third film in a horror franchise, which involves contaminated water. The contamination leads to lesions and deformities and horror fans will want to seek this film out, in theatres. Cabin Fever: Patient Zero stars Sean Astin (Extraction), Brando Eaton ("Burn Notice"), Jillian Murray, Lydia Hearst and Ryan Donowho. A preview for the theatrical launch is here. In this prequel to the original 2002 film, several partiers travel to an isolated Caribbean island. Here, they find an abandoned research and science facility and they decide to go for a deadly swim. They are immersed in a virus, which eats their flesh. Now, these friends will have to find a cure, quickly, or die from this mysterious disease.

Well it’s that time of year again, end of year/best of list time! If you’ve been reading this site – or Blogomatic3000 – for a while now you’ll know my tastes are generally a little different from the more mainstream sites and so my Top 10′s are too! And whilst there have been plenty of “worthy” titles to get cinephiles excited, I’ve been finding a wealth of movie gold in the direct to DVD market (my cinematic home).
The usual disclaimers apply to this Top 10 – this is a list of my favourite films of the year, the films that got me excited and the ones that remained with me after the credits rolled…
1) Odd Thomas
Official Synopsis: In a California desert town, a short-order cook with clairvoyant abilities encounters a mysterious man with a link to dark, threatening forces.
