Solid

Whether you like or loathe the adaptation of Asimov's original work, you will be impressed with this episode. Easily one of the strongest so far. With incredible but unintrusive CGI, this episode brings together and advances important strands. Demerzel's origin, in particular, is beautifully done. A visual treat, wonderfully presented. If you like sci-fi, you will enjoy those scenes. Elsewhere in the universe, Tellem and Gaal's relationship takes a turn for the worse, no surprise given last week's story. And Day and Seldon have a nicely staged chat about all things Foundation. Lee Pace's Day face to face with Jared Harris's Seldon, two huge characters in their own way, was cleverly constructed.

I started watching this as a book reading sceptic. It's won me over and I don't want this season to end.

What a spectacle!!!
The1FilmCritic8 September 2023
This episode is by far the best episode and not only of the series but of any sci-fi show ever created. I'm speechless.

Everything is finally coming together.

I could never imagine that such epic is possible in science fiction.

From the beginning to the end, everything was perfectly written, acted and animated (and oh god how perfect the cgi is).

The episode starts with a flashback. Right from the beginning you can already see that this episode is going to be outstanding. And here I just want to quickly praise the fantastic actress of Demerzel (Laura Birn), she definitely has become my favourite character.

I probably don't even have to say it but Lee Pace literally blossoms in the role. Keep going guys!!

Fantastic fantastic, I can't really say anything more than praise and more praise. Foundation has officially won my heart.

apple, please use this episode as a template for the rest of the show.

This is what a great episode looks like. Scene to scene, line for line, had it all and then some.

Great action, space battle, drama, and intensity finally. All previous episodes have been ok and have you holding on just enough for the next to give you a gem like this. Wish the previous episodes delivered as ep. 9 does.

Well done, directed and epic. True to the spirit of sci-fi, asimov, and space adventure. Salvor and Gaal story a little boring now but hope it comes to a cool finale. Cleon dynasty and Demerzel is really what makes this fascinating and captivating. Love Jared Harris and his Seldon potrayal too.

What we and/or I have been holding out for. Hoping ep. 10 and beyond can live up to that.

Amazing things happen
GwydionMW8 September 2023
We get to learn a lot more about Demerzel and her relationship with the first Cleon. And this ties back to the wider story of Asimov's books, which is good.

Not so good is the decision that the Encyclopedia Galactica was never produced. In the book, it continued as a minor function. Asimov used it to give summaries that were well-informed, but not always correct.

The planned visit by Emperor to Terminus happens, of course, but with unexpected twists and turns and a cliff-hanger ending. One wonders just how many more changes the script will make to Asimov's tale.

Meantime Gael's story continues, with some emotional stress and a very unexpected helper arriving.

But I'll give nothing away: the surprise is much of the fun. I will be adding spoiler details in Trivia.

A season of recurring themes
ShippersAreEvil8 September 2023
A theme: As with many good stories, there are misdirections and red herrings galore, from simple showy magic tricks to body swapping to mind swapping (sort of);

Another theme: how arrogant those in positions of power can be when they think they have all the insight;

And another: Time. From realising that we are not quite when we thought we were, to showcasing a four dimensional analytical engine;

And another: lies.

All weaving together, reinforcing and tearing at history, in a constant tug of war between what *could* be and what *will* be; between the great sweep of stochastic force and the non-linear importance of inflection points.

Good heaven's this is storytelling of the highest order and, still, we will only know in the next episode if they have 'stuck the landing'.

But that was a quite stupendous amount of fun. Weep, NTBers, weep.

Unbelievable

Warning: Spoilers
Everything about Foundations story comes to a head in this episode. I just stared at the TV for a long time after the credits rolled, not quite sure what I was feeling, tears in my eyes, jaw dropped. This is the most tramatic, heart wrenching episode of any show I've ever seen, right up there with the red wedding or ozymandeous. I do believe we just lost 3/4ths of the cast in a single episode. The special effects are breathtaking, the dilemmas and actions the cast is forced to make, the emotion of the repurcusions of what just unfolded, all culminate into one hell of an episode. Definetly the best one yet, and I'm not sure how they could ever top the highs of this episode. God, I love this show.

Now that is what an Empire is.
therealjaysmoke11 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
It took us 9 episodes to get to this point and my goodness this was well worth the wait. This is what I expect to see from an Empire Cleon, not the timid and talkative one we've been presented with all these months. As terrible as the event is, this was so powerful in all the right ways. I can now understand why there's going to be a war and why the empire must be destroyed. Prior to this catastrophe, it was about envy and hate for a long lasting dynasty but now, there's real justification for the hate. I hope however, it's not too little too late, and that we get to see and feel the full force of the Empire in subsequent episodes.

So many questions, what is Dermezel going to do about Dusk? Is she going to take over the Empire? What about Day? Would he grow more darker, considering how fulfilled he was at the destruction of Terminus? And the General? Would he turn his back on the Empire? What is Hari, Gaal and Sal's purpose and role in all these?

I can't wait for episode 10. Good job on this one guys.

Asimov would be proud
buzzstudio8 September 2023
Love may not conquer all, but it will never die trying.

For me, this episode was ground zero for Asimov's vision of humanity in the Foundation series. While the TV show has charted it's own path in almost every respect (compared to the books), I can only applaud the writers and showrunners for delivering so forcefully, especially in this episode, the very intent and heart of what Asimov's Foundation is all about. As a writer, Asimov always had a trick (or two or three) up his sleeves, and in this episode I find the same delicious collision of the inevitable and the unexpected.

The pacing is excellent, and the scenes and storylines are interwoven in a very satisfying way. Starting with a fairy tale about a robot, the drama unfolds, while nicely developing the show's major themes, then brings it all together in a brutally delicious climax.

And yet there is still some very unfinished business...

It's 10/10
mwkrasn8 September 2023
Outstanding episode, the best so far. It must be admitted that the foundation is a very uneven series. The first season was so tiring in places that it seemed like nothing could save it. Fortunately, the second season turned out to be much better and from episode to episode it gave hope for better. For the episode 9 of season 2 I give it 10/10 (although this is probably an exaggerated rating and I refer it to other episodes in this series). At this moment, I would say that the entire series is an 8/10 and I hope that it will get better and better with each subsequent episode.

Lastly, apart from everything, as others have already written, the special effects in this series really deserve recognition.

Another story but well done!
hannes-gudjonsson9 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I stopped watching this after season one because it derailed too much from Asimov's books and it was simply not good enough. What did it for me was when Demerzel broke the first robotic law and killed a person.

Being a sci-fi nerd, I could not stay away and started watching again when 3 episodes where released and I am not disappointed!

Sure, this is a totally different story than Asimov's but it's coming together pretty nicely and this episode was extremely good!

It's interesting how they have build up Cleon's character and how he is trying to change the clone dynasty and Demerzels story is absolutely fantastic.

Very much looking forward for the season finale next week!

OMG OMG
cesar-castillo20019 September 2023
Hey, I gotta tell ya, I'm sittin' here, watchin' this sci-fi episode, and I'm like, "Whoa, where the heck do I even begin?" It's like, mind-blowing stuff, you know what I mean? This thing's got me on a wild rollercoaster ride!

So, all these characters, they're just poppin' off left and right in this episode, like fireworks on the Fourth of July. Demerzel, Seldon, Day, Salvo, Belriose - you name it, they're all going kaboom! It's like a sci-fi fireworks display, and I'm lovin' every second of it.

Now, I gotta be real with you, though - Gaal, that chick, she's still as boring as a cardboard box. But you know what? We've got so much other crazy stuff happenin' that you almost forget about her.

And here's the kicker - they're settin' up the whole Foundation (no pun intended) for five seasons! I mean, holy smokes, that's some serious long-term planning. It's like they're layin' down the groundwork for an epic sci-fi saga that's gonna keep us hooked for a long, long time.

So, if you haven't seen this episode yet, you better get on it, 'cause it's a wild ride from start to finish. And trust me, you won't wanna miss out on the explosion extravaganza and the epic saga that's about to unfold. It's big, bold, and unforgettable.

Mostly good episode with severely alogical character behavior
michellewalthersz8 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The general did not even bother asking to save his beloved.

Demerzel did not even bother taking a look at the psychohistory.

Foundation decided to suicide for no reason.

Seldon did not attempt for any compromise.

Salvor didn't shoot mental woman or her henchman when she could.

Mental woman played the trope of cat and mouse with her prey until her demise.

Empire did not execute his prisoners on the spot and acted entirely on unconvincing emotion.

Overall the episode had many good parts, especially those containing Empire and Demerzel's history. The story of all three mental women are like a thorn in the show's backside and reeks of privilegedness of plot armor and destiny for them and was boring to watch.

I'd rate the episode 6 stars, just as the season 2 in general. It has good parts, very boring parts but mostly it disappoints due to the potential unfulfilled. This could have been a terrific series.

Visuals over substance
bendiksendan11 September 2023
Asimov wrote in Foundation books, and I believe it was even dialogue in this show that 'violence s the last resort of the incompetent' which must be an admission of incompetence on part of the writers of this show who every time go for violence on the order somewhere between a Michael Bay feature and GTA played by a particularly sadistic 13 year old. The story of the Foundation book moves on the subtlety, the discreet historic flows on large scale, the show is all about explosions! Lasers! Stabby people! I.e. The show is all about individual violence and the coherence of the storytelling really suffers as the galactic SFX budget is spent.

Fantastic
yqrfmpzdn9 September 2023
What it promised to deliver, it delivered. It is epic on the true sense, as everything is immense, on the same time that it feels intimate.

"Long Ago, Not Far Away" follows everything that the previous episode built and lay the foundation to everything that will come.

The slow burn is real. This is an example of an episode that does not limit itself on what it should do. Really, "The Foundation" strives at being what it wants: a grand, epic and philosophical science fiction series with superb acting.

The cinematography and both production and costume design are stellar on an already outstanding episode. Everything comes together and, ind the end, you just want it to continue.

Amazing.

HOLY POLY!!!
splayzer8 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I just saw the episode and I am in complete ecstasy!!!

Book purists, be damned!

This is the BEST space sci-fi on TV since the good ol' days of Farscape and Firefly. And its not a coincidence that Foundation completes the tri"F"ecta!

This is one of the very few times that I finished the episode and immediately watched again!

Every sequence is a masterpiece!

Demerzel's story, Poly's speech, Seldon and Day, the space battle, the freaking SPACE BATTLE! The Invictus crashing into Terminus!

And to spire my feelings completely out of control, Bel's ship is called 'Destiny' (i have over 3000hrs and counting logged into Destiny 2 the game) Gaal's part still meh tho.

Pure sci-fi orgasm!

Davis S. Goyer: you Sir, are a freaking genius!!!

WOW.....just WOW! 10/10.

Surprising, stunning and brilliantly played out.
mcvspjvj8 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This marks the penultimate episode of season 2, but it's a whopper.

Short of some sort of deus ex machina explanation that reverses events at the end of this episode, there's no turning back. Yes, it's wildly deviated from the books on specific plot ploints, but I think anyone under any illusion that this was a 1:1 adaptation will have had that dispelled long ago already.

This has the potential to be the Foundation's Red Wedding.

It makes Poly, and Bel Rio's lover's characters all the more tragic.

Constance, Hober Mallow witnessing something truly horrifying, while Bel RIos forced to issue a command that he desperately, for personal reasons, was utterly torn apart by. This will have consequences later down the line, no doubt.

Each of the different strands of this story are coming together, with a highly anticipated finale next week. The inevitable long wait to season 3 will be painful to say the least.

Sorry if you are just so hung up that this isn't exactly how things play out in the books - but here's the thing - this is not the books. The showrunners are using inspiration, events, characters and general direction from the books to weave together a new and modernised story that is fresh, and totally engrossing in it's own way.

It plays to the strengths of the medium it's made for, rather than trying to faithfully represent the books 1:1.

A Tale of Galactic Scale
lujason-4582216 September 2023
What Foundation show runners and writers were able to execute (and it comes full fruition this episode) is the telling of a long, galactic spanning story in a compelling and entertaining way...wait isn't that what the Foundation books do? Yes it is and they did it this season in a TV format.

The reveal of demerzel's origins and how both her and the cleons are trapped in their cycle is one of the most poetic arcs of recent science fiction. I can't stop thinking about it longer after watching the episode on this. It's interesting that the writers were able to take source material and create deep and meaningful original narrative but in line with the theme of the source material. Bravo sirs.

What a show and what a season
Fargomoviecritic9 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Yeah there is so not so good fighting between Salvor and the other dude. That stuff is ok to not be so convincing. The fact that they had the story on how Dermerzel came to be by Empire's side was interesting. I like the fact that those who figured it out were also trapped so they couldn't tell anyone. I hope Brother Dawn and Queen Sareth get put down. I kinda like Cleon being the ruler so Seldom can take him down himself.

How sad it was to see terminus literally implode- have to see the physics behind that. For every action there is a reaction and to have the planet kinda implode without drawing in Cleon's ship I will have to look that up. Oh man, sad episode but I don't think Cleon would actually do it and he did. I can't wait to see the season finale! One of my favorite shows.

INCREDIBLE. BRILLANT.
dreamer-5901930 December 2023
Without question. The absolutely best scifi drama I have ever watched. The story takes you on a journey of twists and unexpected turns. It feels like its Star Wars theme show... absolutory incredible.

Cant wait to see the rest of the episodes!! What makes this so good for me is that the second season is already in the books and I just discovered this!!!

Acting is great, the plot is juicy with the ability to leave you at the end of Episode 1 knowing you are about to BING watch the series! Been a while since I have found a show that really has gotten my attention.

If you are looking for something to watch this is it!

FINALLY! FOUNDATION IS BACK!
gabrielmikhno9 September 2023
Omg. Amazing! Beautiful! This episode was just beautiful! What happened?!

NO SPOILERS for this episode alone.

Let's get this straight. I loved season 1. Personally I think it was a genius from beginning to end. The world building was amazing. The dialogue was smart. Everything with Gaal was fantastic! There were some issues with the Trantor storyline. But it managed to tie things up at the end. Everything with the Cleons was incredible. The Dusk storyline might be my favorite one in the show. So I'm a big defender of last season. But this one...

The second season lost me. It started off with promise, but kept meandering every episode. There was no sense of direction. I didn't like the Seldon backstory. It felt off. Everything with Gaal and Salvor is very awkward, and all the magic witch stuff is getting on my nerve. I thought this was a science fiction show. I thought Gaal was just really good at math. But now it's really just all gotten off track, and Gaal is this magic being. I just wanted to fall asleep when they came on the screen. Everything with Constant and the Clerk is okay. Clean storyline was the strongest this season. But still fails to feel as smart and interesting as when Dawn was figuring out he was different in the first season.

But this episode, really payed off! It had emotion, action, smart dialogue! And don't let me forget Demerzel's backstory! It was the smartest thing put out this season! Even the Gaal and Salvor storyline was entertaining! I couldn't stop laughing at the end of it! It has a lot of explaining to do. This episode made some big moves! I was at complete shock by the end of it. I am wondering how the writers are going to handle the finale episode, which will be hard for them to land considering this episode came right before it.

This episode shows there is still hope for this show. As long as they don't screw it up next week. Crossed fingers.

Best Episode of the Series
coreydingus9 September 2023
I normally would want to discuss spoilers & breakdown all the great moments of the episode, but this one is best left for the viewers.

Not only do we get the best action set pieces, we get some of the coolest visuals seen in the series, period. There's tense drama, a lot of emotional weight between our characters, and so many stories come to a head.

This reminded me of old school Game of Thrones, where episode 9 of each season was the big payoff for the year, and where all the biggest events occured.

Every character had their moments, even if some like Herber Mallow weren't in much of a position to do a whole lot. Still, it made complete sense in context of the story. And wow, the reveals & dialogue this episode were just fantastic for those who really care about the lore & story of the show.

I'm just going to stop here, as it's already been hard enough not to discuss spoilers. Only thing left to say is I know I'll be subbing to AppleTV+ any time a new season of this show is on.

Ridiculous
edwin-schild-249-6055708 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This story is as far from the originaliteit as Trantor from Terminus.

The more episodes I see, The more I want to read the books again. They are so much better than this. I don't minder that malen characters in the book are female characters in the series, but having Demerzel as someone who is not bound by Asimovs robotica laws and also vering in the side of Empire is ridiculous. Demerzel was the brain behind Foundation as a result of law 0 which chooses humanity over a single human.

This incarnation of Foundation is just to please people Who bever read the books. Visually it night look great but storywise it is terrible.

1 more to go!!!
moviesfilmsreviewsinc17 September 2023
Cleon I, living in an ancient palace on Trantor, discovers a hallway that hasn't been entered in thousands of years. He meets Demerzel, trapped in a mysterious mechanism, who offers him stories from her years of experience. Demerzel becomes Cleon's first secret, and he visits her frequently. When Cleon's time comes to take the throne, he tells her he might not be able to meet her anymore. Demerzel tells him about her past as a soldier leader who was captured and brought before Emperor Aburanis, who was fascinated by her. Emperor Aburanis studied Demerzel and gained knowledge from her, but eventually realized he would die and she would remain. Fearing that Demerzel would gather information and use it to reignite another war, he traps her in a cage. Demerzel believes she is unique and the key to creating more of her kind, so Aburanis didn't destroy her when he had a chance. Cleon, believing Demerzel was trying to please him, freed her from Aburanis' mechanism but kept her in a cage. Cleon offered her clothes and made her stories more explicit. Years later, Cleon called off his marriage because his partner wasn't like Demerzel. The struggle with enjoying Foundation this season continues, but the show's content involving Trantor and the Empire triumvirate remains entertaining and updates the original work. However, the episode involving Gaal and Salvor is disappointing. Tellem tries to control Gaal's body to live on, but Salvor disrupts things. The action revolves around Tellem breaking Gaal free and trying to escape offworld. While the characters are executed well, they should not be present. The physical version of Hari, who was supposed to be dead, is brought back to save the day, but it's not worth discussing due to its nonsense. The episode promises to delves into Demerzel's past, starting with her discovery by Cleon as a child in a secret room. However, the story is superficial due to her age and previous actions. As Cleon grows from a child to an old man, the episode never gets to anything good or clears Demerzel's prior names. Cleon finds a way to get immortality and ensure Demerzel's identity through his genetic dynasty plan. He traps Demerzel into his plan and gifts her the galaxy through it, as the clones will be their offspring. The horror from Demerzel upon realizing the trap plays well, but much of what makes it effective isn't even mentioned. The first law of robotics is not laid out properly, and the zeroeth law is tragic without giving Demerzel agency. The best material involves Empire and Day, who arrives on Trantor and aims to reclaim what's there while breaking Seldon's premise. He stops the genetic dynasty and uses Poly to prove his point. The show hits various points, with Lee Pace outperforming everyone, and it plays into the conquering Roman leader thing without actually doing anything himself. The show delivers in a big way with special effects and ship design, making it exciting and fulfilling its promise. The overall impact of Day's character gives the episode the real impact it needs.

Expand on The Empire story arc and diminish the rest.
MrSelfPaid8 September 2023
The Cleonic dynasty story arc is the only reason a lot of viewers including me, are still watching the show and if there is anything Apple should learn and implement, it is that when the show focuses on the politics of the Cleons and the Empire they control, it becomes a much better show.

To be honest, I don't give a damn about what happens to the story arc of Salvor and Gale. All that 'The Mule' stuff is pretty boring and quite dumb.

Improve the dynamics of politics between the Cleons and the Empire they control. Give us more backstory on some of the Cleons who ruled generations ago, give us more backstory on the war against the machines, give us more backstory on Demerzel role as a leader of machines in the war between human and machines etc

Give us anything but the boring and quite dumb storyline about Seldon and his 'psychohistory'.

It's Empires world as far as I see it.

A very difficult series.
jaccobandreev11 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Spoilers

I would like to say, a sad episode, an entire cult dies and there were civilians there.

However, members of this cult, these civilians attacked and invaded the territory of the sovereign empire, endangering the lives of the heads of the entire empire.

I will, however, quote yesterday's phrase that I expressed in a dialogue on a hackathon in the field of AI, it concerns corruption and bribery, but here it is very appropriate, or rather part of it:

""" Because the state is not just MILLIONS OF PEOPLE, it is a system that has been built for more than one year, and not the first tens of years, it is complex and requires control.

But it is complex because all these MILLIONS OF LIVES depend on it, if the state disappears, money disappears, money disappears - the balance of power disappears, anarchy begins - death, total hunger, disease and lack of medicine, a decrease in the level of education or its complete absence, and as a result , the death of an entire nation, the death of millions of people and the murder of potentially unborn people, the murder of the potential of living people, taking away the chance of childhood from children, depriving parents of the right to freedom, protecting their family, etc., etc.

The scale of the destruction of the state is impossible to describe, but historically, all states that experienced defeat in the world race doomed their people to wandering and decades of suffering.

Take Nazi Germany and after wartime. This is total horror, you won't even see this in Saw (film). And there is no need to even embellish, these are just facts - they are historical, it is difficult to argue with them.

"""

If there is a cult that gives out an aura that can protect against shooting, mechanisms that turn iron into gold, any state loses the basis for the economy, everything depreciates, global inflation and the death of millions and, on the scale of the series, billions and trillions of people occur.

What we were shown was this sect of misguided cultists who upset the balance of power for everyone, they took weapons, they took shields and they took money under their own control.

After some 50 years, they would have completely destroyed the entire economy of the empire, depriving it of all opportunities to protect civilians from sectarians, from terrorism, from total war.

The decision chosen by the Emperor, after what he saw, is the only correct one, the only thing, of course, was that he could still wait and save his military man.

However, the scale of the problem, where there is a cult distributing complex technologies, auras of invulnerability, money and other things left and right, there is no time to wait, but not so much of course.

And yet, the choice was made correctly, and although this seems like a total murder of sectarians as some kind of bad act, the death of the empire is the death of billions of people, and the emperor could not afford to allow such a possibility.

The Emperor is the guarantor of life and peace in the universe, and someone declares that he will destroy his system from the inside, he is forced to defend himself - and this he does.

It makes it possible to abandon the theory, EVEN SELDON HIMSELF SAYS "Yes, indeed in theory there are paths", CAMON SELDON TURN YOUR HEAD ON, if there are so many paths, then it is impossible to have all the combinations and know they lead to one, this is a total absurdity. THE EMPEROR TELLS HIM RIGHT ABOUT THIS TO HIS FACE. But he is a fanatic, he doesn't care, he wants to know that he has power over the entire universe, his thirst for rightness puts billions of lives, billions of unborn beings at stake. He is a radical sectarian, and when the Emperor sees that everyone around him sincerely does not understand what they are doing, they sincerely do not suspect what kind of apocalypse in the universe Seldon is preparing them for, he has no choice.

A very difficult series.
