- "Nashville" - "Why Don't You Love Me" - May 8, 2013
Juliette gets drunk. Rayna gets down. Gunnar gets duplicitous. Avery gets dutiful. And Coleman gets out of the way in tonight's "Nashville."
Juliette, in her quest to keep the police -- and more importantly, by association the press-- out of her train wreck of a life, hires private security to track Dante, freeze her accounts, etc. She has also started drinking, heavily. But amidst the doom and gloom she gets the call that she has been nominated for the CMA Female Vocalist of the Year. Her excitement is tempered only slightly by the fact that Rayna is nominated as well.
Since Rayna has already won 4, Juliette is hell bent on having Marshall and the record company focus their efforts on her but when they please low budget, Juliette takes it upon herself to launch a million dollar campaign to woo CMA voters. She then finds out that Dante has spend $17,000 on an engagement ring. Presumably, not for her. She also keeps drinking. Enough to worry even her mom.
Enough that when she show up at the CMA nomination party that Rayna dubs her perfume 80 proof. Enough that she screams at Deacon while he and Rayna are trying to have a conversation so he quits. Enough that she then hires Avery to play for her show-- he does very well-- and then try to hit on him in her limo. He declines and she is sad she can't even pick up a roadie. Her security guard pours her back into her house where Jolene tries to tuck her in and console her as she tearfully wonders why nobody cares about her. And then Dante really lowers the boom. He calls and Juliette asks what he wants. And then all we hear is her say "What kind of tape?" (Looks like a Juliette sex tape is in the offing.)
Meanwhile Deacon and Rayna are all lovey-dovey, schmoopy with each other in bed but when the real world starts to encroach things get tougher. In an effort to be honest with Teddy she tells him that she and Deacon are tentatively an item and he goes ballistic noting there's no way Rayna can have a relationship with him and not eventually tell him that Maddie is his biological daughter so she should call it off. Apparently, they had an agreement that he would never be told when they got married.
Rayna tries to pull back, saying they should take it slow. Coleman tries to warn him that he shouldn't blow up his whole life for a woman who has messed with his mind over the years. Stacy is heartbroken when he awkwardly breaks up with her and gives her his dog to boot. Tandy tells Rayna she should just treat it as a fling. But warning signs be damned, they find each other too irresistible and when he says he knows she's not telling him something and that he doesn't care she melts all over again in the back of her limo on the way from the CMA nomination party.
While this is going on, Teddy is dealing with a sullen Maddie who blames him for the divorce. Whatever you want to say about his philandering, Peggy Kenter ways, he is a great dad and loves her even knowing her paternity. He convinces her to go to her school's father-daughter dance and eventually goads her into dancing and she has a great time. She later tells him she's glad she went but misses that they are not a whole family anymore.
While he's patching things up with Maddie, Teddy gets a break-up note from Coleman. When Coleman realizes that Tandy, Teddy, and Lamar all have their guns pointed at each other and each was trying to use him as a pawn, he wisely realizes if he just gets out of their way they'll destroy each other and he can likely swoop in and pick up Nashville's pieces.
Across town Gunnar is still weirded out by Will but he didn't say anything to Scarlett about it. He's too busy stealing his brother's song to record a demo with that producer who heard him in the bar with Will. He goes off to do that while Will and Scarlett go to the CMA nomination party, schmooze with industry people, and get confused when they see Avery onstage with Juliette.
Gunnar cuts his demo, his producer loves it and asks if he has more. He shows him Jason's notebook of song idea and he loves them but has trouble reconciling the outlaw type songs with Gunnar. He says it's all true except where the statute of limitations has run out, ha ha ha. So it looks like he plans to steal all of Jason's songs. Later, as Scarlett returns from the party he's listening to the demo and she gives it a spin and says she likes it too. But later she finds Jason's notebook and kinda can't believe he took Jason's song. He shrugs it off saying it's just a song.
