Fox will keep its Missing Persons Unit on the job for another season.
The network has renewed the drama series Alert: Missing Persons Unit for a third season in 2024-25. The series will remain in production after season two wraps, which will bank episodes leading into next season and potentially serve as a hedge against a possible IATSE strike in the summer.
Alert is one of just two dramas Fox has aired in 2023-24 as the network relied heavily on its unscripted and animated rosters, which weren’t affected by last year’s dual strikes. Fox has yet to make a call on the other drama, The Cleaning Lady.
Alert stars Scott Caan and Dania Ramirez as Philadelphia detectives who head the city’s missing persons unit and work to find missing or abducted people and reunite them with loved ones. Adeola Role, Ryan Broussard and Alisha-Marie Ahamed also star...

Some of this TV season’s blood has already been spilled — looking at you, “NCIS: Hawai’i” — but as we head toward upfronts week, there are still a number of broadcast shows “on the bubble.”
But as the networks settle in on a diet of mostly stable franchises and fewer series pilots, there’s also less primetime schedule frenzy this year. The days before upfronts week which would normally mean a rapid fire few days of broadcast series renewals and cancellations announcements. But normal left the building a long time ago.
The broadcast network portion of upfronts has been so significantly pared down from years past that it hardly resembles what it used to be. These days, most of the broadcast networks announce renewals and cancellations well ahead of their actual presentations.
Take CBS, which has already announced its new fall and spring schedules as well as all of its renewals and cancellations.

Exclusive: Fox is doubling down on its commitment to Rescue: Hi-Surf, picking up seven additional episodes of the Hawaii-set lifeguard drama from Warner Bros. Television, Fox Entertainment and John Wells Productions. The back order brings Rescue Hi-Surf‘s first season, which will air in 2024-25, to 19 episodes.
The network has been high on the project — which marks ER and The West Wing alum Wells’ broadcast return — from the get-go, giving it a straight-to-series order last April and envisioning it as a potential franchise.
Earlier this year, as the series, delayed by the strikes, started production on O’ahu, Fox ordered seven back-up scripts, I hear.

9-1-1 fans can breathe a massive sigh of relief after Thursday’s conclusion to the season’s three-part premiere, now that Bobby and Athena are finally back on land — and back in the saddle. (Bow-chicka-bow-wow!)
Of course, not everyone fared quite as well as the 118’s Mom and Dad this week. For starters, remember that guy who “just wanted to cash out” on the ship? Well, he cashed out all right… from life. He was the episode’s first official victim, leaving just a handful of survivors to make their way off the boat.

The whispers last year about a potential ER revival weren’t true, but this could be the next best thing.
Max has handed out a 15-episode, straight-to-series order for The Pitt, a look at front-line medical workers in Pittsburgh starring Noah Wyle and from ER duo John Wells and R. Scott Gemmill.

Gemmill, who executive produced more than half of ER’s 330 episodes across its 15 seasons, will serve as showrunner on the series, which hails from John Wells Productions and Warner Bros. TV. Wells and Wyle will also be credited as exec producers.

Are you ready to go back to the beach?
Fox sure is.
On Monday, the network confirmed a reboot of the iconic 1989-2001 series is in the works.
The project already has a showrunner attached in Lara Olsen – best known for Netflix’s brilliant but canceled Spinning Out.
There will also be some creatives from the original series along to tackle this new wave.
Original creators Michael Berk, Douglas Schwartz, and Gregory J. Bonann have all scored executive producer credits for the one-hour drama.
What is the Baywatch reboot about?
The updated Baywatch features “daring ocean rescues, pristine beaches, and iconic red bathing suits are back, along with a whole new generation of Baywatch lifeguards,” according to the official logline.
These new lifeguards “navigate complicated, messy personal lives in this action-packed reboot that demonstrates there’s the family you’re born into and the family you find.”

Fox is taking viewers back to the beach with a reboot of an iconic '90s series.
According to a new report from Deadline, the network has joined forces with the indie studio Fremantle to bring David Hasselhoff's beach rescue drama Baywatch back to the small screen.
The remake is being described as an “action-packed” take on the original material, with Lara Olsen serving as showrunner.
It looks as though Hasselhoff, Pamela Anderson, Yasmine Bleeth, and the other stars of the original series are not involved with the reboot at this time.
But we wouldn't be surprised if the Hoff and company wind up making cameos.
Interestingly, the new version of Baywatch is one of two lifeguard dramas set to premiere on Fox in the year to come.
Following strike delays, Rescue: Hi-Surf is set to debut in the fall of 2024.

Slow-motion isn’t just for Zack Snyder films anymore! A Baywatch reboot is in the works at Fox, and the beach will never be the same again! Fox is requesting a sizable script and a penalty deal for the time-honored (and arguably horny) lifeguard drama, with Fremantle and Fox Entertainment co-producing.
We’ve known about a Baywatch reboot since April when Deadline reported Fremantle’s desire to bring fun in the sun back to televisions. At the time, Fox was developing another lifeguard drama, Rescue: Hi-Surf, from John Wells Productions. Rescue, a co-production between Warner Bros. Regardless of prepping Rescue: Hi-Surf, Fox is ready to hit the sands with more than one lifeguard drama, hence the Baywatch reboot.

As Hollywood can’t wait to close the book on one of the most disruptive years in history, marked by a industry-paralyzing double strike that shut down production for more than six months, there is a lot of hope riding on 2024. There is also a dose of anxiety about what exactly the new normal might be.
The new year is expected to bring a selling frenzy. With few writers writing spec scripts during the work stoppage as most focused on strike duties, an anticipated post-strike spec market did not materialize. Unsure whether the main networks and platforms would be open for new business right away or busy attaching acting talent to their packages after the November end of the SAG-AFTRA strike, many producers opted to wait until after the holidays to take out their projects.

Well, at least 9-1-1: Lone Star ended its fourth season on a mostly happy note (there was the Tarlos wedding!) because it will be a while before we see the first responders again. The return of the Fox drama, which usually airs in the midseason, has now been delayed to the 2024-2025 season, TV Insider has confirmed. The fifth season will consist of 12 episodes. Also being held for next season are the new dramas Doc and Rescue: Hi-Surf. These are just the latest shows to be moved to the 2024-2025 season after networks start looking at premiere dates for new and returning series. The writers and actors’ strikes delayed production, with very few scripted shows airing this fall. Those that do return this season will likely only have 10-13 episodes. So far, CBS is the only network to announce a full lineup of premiere dates, starting in February.

Fox procedural “9-1-1: Lone Star” has been pushed back until Fall 2024, a spokesperson for the network told TheWrap.
As the broadcast networks continue to feel the impact of the Hollywood double strike this summer, the fifth installment of the Rob Lowe-led drama is set to consist of 12 episodes. Despite the rescue show’s success throughout its airing, producing a full season was not possible coming out of the work stoppage, which shut down virtually every ongoing production, according to an individual with knowledge of Season 5 logistics.
As “9-1-1: Lone Star” rolls out its fifth season during the 2024-25 season, it will air alongside new dramas “Doc,” which is co-produced by Sony Pictures Television, and John Wells’ “Rescue: Hi-Surf,” which is co-produced by Warner Bros. Television. Both “Doc” and “Rescue: Hi-Surf” were previously pushed to premiere in the 2024 fall season due to residual impacts of the labor dispute.

“9-1-1: Lone Star” Season 5 will not return to Fox until Fall 2024, Variety has confirmed.
According to an individual with knowledge of the situation, the fifth season of the spinoff series will consist of 12 episodes. Fox will use “Lone Star,” it’s highest-rated drama, to launch its new shows “Doc” and “Rescue: Hi-Surf,” both of which were ordered earlier this year but have yet to begin production.
It is the latest production impacted by the writers’ and actors’ strikes that shutdown Hollywood for much of the year. With shows scrambling to get back up and running now that both strikes are settled, a number of series are being pushed to later dates. Most recently, CBS announced premiere dates for several of their scripted shows for midseason, while others are also being pushed to next fall. Those shows will also have abbreviated runs, like “Lone Star.”

Exclusive: Fox’s 2023-2024 schedule will not include the network’s two highest-rated drama series of 2022-23.
The move of flagship 9-1-1 to ABC was announced in May. Now its spinoff, 9-1-1: Lone Star, which was renewed for a fifth season by Fox in May, will not return with new episodes this spring. Instead, the drama starring Rob Lowe will produce 12 episodes to air in fall 2024, making fans’ wait for Season 5 extra long.
Like any other linear or streaming series, 9-1-1: Lone Star has been impacted by the double Hollywood strikes. Earlier this fall, Fox and producing studio 20th Television had been discussing an 18-episode order — six episodes for midseason — and 12 for fall, sources said. As the SAG-AFTRA strike stretched into November, those plans changed, and the two sides ultimately agreed on 12 episodes for fall 2024.

Within moments of the SAG-AFTRA strike ending on Wednesday night, the broadcast networks kicked into high gear to salvage the 2023-24 TV season, which suddenly appears possible — barely.
“Night Court” on NBC will be one of the first shows to return to filming starting next week, according to one person close to the production — with numerous other shows close on its heels.
More than two dozen network shows have been on hold during the six-month work stoppage, and at least a dozen of them will start production within the next few weeks. Some will join “Night Court” next week, others the week after Thanksgiving, like ABC’s “Abbott Elementary, CBS’ “Bob Hearts Abishola” and “Young Sheldon.”

Ok it’s really over now. Like for real. As of 12:01 a.m. Pt on Nov. 9, the SAG-AFTRA actors strike has officially concluded…just over a month after the WGA writers strike came to an end. The acting guild has reached what it says is an “unprecedented” one billion dollar agreement with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) that includes streaming participation bonuses and protection against the use of A.I.
There will be ample time in the weeks to come to pore over the details of SAG’s new contract and celebrate what is surely a monumental win for labor in the United States. For now, however, we can all rest assured hat Hollywood is getting back to work and we’re about to see some of our favorite movies and TV shows again.

Exclusive: Back in May, two weeks into the WGA strike, ABC picked up one new scripted series for the 2023-34 season: Drew Goddard’s High Potential starring Kaitlin Olson. In late September, two days after the end of the WGA strike, the high-profile series was pushed to a fall 2024 launch.
As the anticipated restart of Hollywood production gets delayed further and further by the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, most other new scripted broadcast series picked up last spring for the 2023-24 season are also looking to debut next season.
I hear NBC and Fox are each expected to push both of their upcoming new scripted series, originally targeted for this coming midseason, to 2024-25. Fox will not be moving ahead with “Welcome to Flatch” Season 3.

Law & Order, FBI, Grey’s Anatomy and 9-1-1: Lone Star fans are set to be able to enjoy some new episodes of their favorite shows in the 2023/24 broadcast season after the WGA and the AMPTP struck a deal that would end the writers strike.
The beginning of October was widely seen as the marker for when the writers strike would need to be over to give ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC a fighting chance to get any of their scripted shows on the air for a midseason premiere.
While the actors strike still needs to be resolved and the writers deal still needs to be voted on and ratified, there is optimism that the majority of network dramas and comedies will be able to launch in the new year.

Krapopolis, the Dan Harmon-created animated series that was renewed for its third season before audiences saw a frame, is finally coming to Fox later this month.
It “feels like a moment” for the network, according to Fox’s President of Entertainment Michael Thorn, as it becomes one of the rare, new scripted originals launching on broadcast television this year.
But the launch also masks a major issue the broadcast networks face that the streamers and cable networks do not: if the writers and actors strikes don’t end soon, there will be very few new scripted hours of television on Fox as well as ABC, CBS and NBC this season.
“Beyond being incredibly passionate about [Krapopolis] and Dan Harmon’s vision, we’re invested, because we’ve already ordered a third cycle,” Thorn told Deadline. “On a show level, it’s fantastic. But on a corporate strategy level, it’s really symbolic for us.

Months after the TV upfronts when other networks debuted their lineups, Fox has finally announced its 2023 fall schedule. “The Masked Singer” Season 10, the return of Gordon Ramsay’s “Kitchen Nightmares” and Fox’s wholly owned animated comedy “Krapopolis” from Dan Harmon will be leading the network.
Fox will kick off the fall with a Tuesday night dedicated to musical mysteries. “Celebrity Name That Tune,” hosted by Jane Krakowski and band leader Randy Jackson, will return on Sept. 19. It will then be followed by the Season 3 premiere of “I Can See Your Voice.”
But its real season will begin in earnest on Sunday, Sept. 24. That marks the special two-episode premiere of Fox’s latest animated series, “Krapopolis.” From “Rick and Morty” creator Dan Harmon and starring Hannah Waddingham, Richard Ayoade, Matt Berry, Pam Murphy and Duncan Trussell, the animated comedy follows a flawed family of humans, gods and monsters trying to...

Fox has finally unveiled its fall schedule and, as expected, it’s full of unscripted series and animated shows.
The network once again eschewed plans to launch its fall schedule in May, as the other broadcast networks did. Last year, the network unveiled its 2022/23 schedule in the first week of June.
The fact that Fox is leaning entirely on reality shows and animated series, as well as wrestling, is not a surprise given the fact that the writers strike, which is in Day 71, has disrupted production, as well as the threat of an actors strike.
It has parked its lineup of scripted series including 9-1-1: Lone Star, The Cleaning Lady, Accused, Alert: Missing Persons Unit, Animal Control and new series such as Doc and Rescue: Hi-Surf for the time being.

Fox made its annual upfront pitch to advertisers at the Manhattan Center on Monday afternoon, pushing the messages of Fox Entertainment, Tubi, Fox News, and Fox Sports, all while promising the audience that don’t worry, we’ll get you hammered soon.
Coming off of presentations hampered by the pandemic in recent years, Fox was back in nearly full force, with the writers’ strike limiting the number of network stars in attendance. It was standing-room only crowd at the Fox upfront — mostly because there was no place to sit. But there were cocktails and lots of f-bombs from Gordon Ramsay, who helped to keep the 55-minute presentation moving at NYC’s Manhattan Center Monday.
Just like it did last year, Fox unveiled its 2023-24 content slate without showing a schedule. Instead, there was lots of small talk about Fox Sports, Fox News, and Tubi. Here were some of the highlights:
There was an opening “act” featuring dancers in space suits, football uniforms and Masked Singer costumes. That’s all we have to say about that.
Fox Sportscaster Michael Strahan and an f-bomb dropping Gordon Ramsay opened the presentation by standing on top of a bar in the center of NYC’s Manhattan Center. Yes folks, presentation-goers could load up on booze — and stay standing — while seeing what the “Fox Community” has to offer.

“We have to love the creative and we have to love the business model.”
That’s what Fox CEO Rob Wade told reporters Monday ahead of his network’s upfront presentation to Madison Avenue ad buyers, as he and his fellow broadcast network executives usher in a harsh new reality that confronts the nearly flatline linear ratings for pricey scripted originals.
That’s also how Wade described the decision to let 911 — Fox’s highest-rated scripted show — move to ABC for the upcoming 2023-24 broadcast season while still keeping its lower-rated spinoff, Lone Star.

For the second straight year, Fox is not releasing a fall schedule at its upfront presentation. Whenever the network does announce its plans, it will include a healthy dose of unscripted programming.
The broadcaster did release its slate of primetime series for the 2023-24 season Monday morning, and it features near parity between the number of scripted (13) and unscripted (12) shows. The latter category includes renewals for Farmer Wants a Wife and Special Forces; new game shows Snake Oil, hosted by David Spade, and We Are Family, hosted by Jamie and Corinne Foxx and from the same producers as Beat Shazam; and the returns of I Can See Your Voice, which took the 2022-23 season off, and Gordon Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares, last seen on Fox way back in 2014 — when it shared space on the schedule with the first seasons of Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Sleepy Hollow.

For the second year in a row, Fox is not releasing a fall schedule ahead of its upfront presentation.
Fox did the same thing in 2022, opting instead to announce their content slate for the upcoming broadcast season but holding off on announcing a formal schedule until a later date. Last year, the move came as the network was still waiting on decisions on the dramas “9-1-1” and “The Resident.” But with the latter show canceled and the former moving to ABC, this year’s move comes as the writers’ strike enters its third week.
Networks like CBS and NBC have already announced their fall lineups, but whether or not any primetime scripted shows across all the networks debut as scheduled remains to be seen as the strike drags on.

Fox did the same thing in 2022, opting instead to announce their content slate for the upcoming broadcast season but holding off on announcing a formal schedule until a later date. Jamie Foxx, Hannah Waddingham, Will Arnett and “Shameless” producer John Wells are among the big names set to bring their talents to Fox’s 2023-24 programming slate. Whether the broadcast network’s next TV season will begin this fall, however, remains unclear.
In an unusual and astute turn, Fox opted to go vague ahead of their upfronts presentation to advertisers Monday, not promising new programming for the fall as the writers’ strike puts most productions on pause.
“Rather than announce a schedule today that we may not be able to meet this fall, we will hold back until we have a better handle on what programming will be available,” Executive Vice President of Program Planning and Content Strategy for Fox Entertainment Dan Harrison said in a conference call. Executives repeatedly emphasized that the Covid-19 pandemic taught the network “how to pivot and be flexible.” Fox will be using the same...

Fox Entertainment will have its new CEO, Rob Wade, making his debut at the network’s upfront presentation today. In a sign of continuity, he will unveil the Fox content slate for the 2023-2024 television season but not a schedule. The network first broke with tradition by not presenting a fall grid at the upfront last year; Fox announced fall schedule and premiere dates June 6.
The network did away with unveiling a fall schedule at its May 2022 presentation because, in media companies’ multi-platform pitch to advertisers, that does not have the importance and urgency it once did. That strategy is even more timely this year because of the uncertainty surrounding the networks’ fall schedules amid the ongoing WGA strike.

“Animal Control” has been renewed for Season 2 at Fox, Variety has learned.
The renewal comes as little surprise, given the fact that the show is Fox’s first wholly owned live-action comedy. Per Fox, the show’s premiere was the network’s most streamed scripted debut ever, drawing an estimated 4.5 million viewers across all platforms in its first three days of availability.
As the name suggests, the series centers on a group of animal control workers. The cast is led by Joel McHale, who stars alongside Michael Rowland, Vella Lovell, Ravi Patel, Grace Palmer, Alvina August, Kelli Ogmundson, and Gerry Dee.
“We are thrilled our viewers have responded to ‘Animal Control’ as much as we did,” said Michael Thorn, president of scripted programming for Fox Entertainment. “The incredibly talented ensemble cast, led by Joel McHale, along with our creative team, Bob Fisher, Rob Greenberg, Dan Sterling and Tad Quill – not...

“Fantasy Island” will not be returning for Season 3 at Fox, Variety has learned.
The reimagining of the classic series originally aired during the summer on Fox, while the second season has been airing as part of the network’s midseason schedule.
“We were very pleased with Fantasy Island’s fun and escapist creative, which we had hoped would gain strong traction among viewers. Sony Pictures Television is an important partner of ours, and we look forward to continuing to work with them on ‘Accused,’ ‘Alert: Missing Persons Unit,’ ‘Doc’ and the upcoming animated series Universal Basic Guys/Hoagie Bros. We’d also like to thank Fantasy Island’s cast, led by Roselyn Sánchez, Kiara Barnes and John Gabriel Rodriquez, crew and executive producers Liz Craft, Sarah Fain and Anne Clements for their partnership on the series,” said Fox in a statement.
Roselyn Sánchez stars as Elena Roarke, a descendant of the original Mr.

Fox is making its renewal and pick up decisions.
The network has canceled comedy series Call Me Kat after three seasons. The show has seen dwindling ratings, particularly in its third season.
On the comedy side, Fox still has Animal Control, which is expected to receive a second season. However, the future of Welcome To Flatch, which is in its second season, is unclear.
Call Me Kat has been paired with Animal Control and the two shows are not considered particularly compatible. Welcome To Flatch comes at an attractive price point, but the cancelation of Call Me Kat is not expected to influence Fox’s decision whether to bring it back for a third season. Finding more comedies is a priority for new head of comedy Cheryl Dolins.
