Dan Wootton’s eponymous Gb News show and King Charles III’s coronation attracted the most complaints from U.K. viewers in 2023 according to Ofcom.
The U.K. media regulator has unveiled its list of the most complained about shows this year. Unsurprisingly, most of them were current affairs-related.
A September episode of Wootton’s show, “Dan Wootton Tonight,” topped the list with 8,867 complaints after the anchor and his guest, actor Laurence Fox, made what Ofcom called “misogynistic comments” about a female journalist. Ofcom is currently investigating the complaints.
Meanwhile it was “Bridgerton” star Adjoa Andoh’s comments during the king’s coronation back in May that attracted the second highest number of objections, with Ofcom receiving 8,421 complaints. Andoh, a guest commentator on ITV’s broadcast of the ceremony, remarked that the Buckingham Palace balcony was “terribly white” as King Charles and his family appeared to wave to the crowds.

Laurence Fox’s highly misogynistic rant on Dan Wootton Tonight, which led to the actor and politician’s firing from Gb News, was Ofcom’s most-complained-about TV show of the year in 2023.
The episode in September, in which Fox ranted about journalist Ava Evans – saying no “self-respecting man would climb into bed with her” – narrowly beat complaints around Bridgerton star Adjoah Andoh’s comments during King Charles III’s Coronation to the top spot of the regulator’s annual list.
Fox was fired from Gb News following the rant, which generated nationwide headlines and amassed a total of 8,867 complaints, ahead of Andoh by around 200.
Ofcom investigated almost immediately due to the severity of the breach and it is one of a dozen Gb News shows that have been or are being probed by the regulator this year, with five already found to be in breach. Fox, who regularly featured on...

UK media regulator Ofcom has ruled out an investigation into ITV’s coverage of King Charles III’s Coronation after a record number of complaints about comments made by Bridgerton star Adjoa Andoh.
Ofcom received 8,372 messages from disgruntled viewers after Andoh accused the royal family of being “terribly white” as they took to the Buckingham Palace balcony to mark the crowning of King Charles last month.
“We’ve gone from the rich diversity of the [Westminster] Abbey to a terribly white balcony. I’m very struck by that,” she told ITV hosts Julie Etchingham and Tom Bradby.
In what was comfortably the most complained about moment on British TV this year, viewers said they found the comments offensive and said they amounted to racial discrimination.
Ofcom has decided, however, that no further action is necessary as the regulator continues to emphasize the importance of freedom of expression on UK television.

Channel 4 has received nearly 1,300 Ofcom complaints over its controversial show Naked Education.
Presented by Anna Richardson and created by the team behind Naked Attraction, the educational show about body positivity aired on Channel 4 earlier this month.
In the first episode, a group of 14 to 16-year-olds were taught about body hair, with the segment concluding with four adults stripping off in front of them to show diversity in other people’s bodies.
The four adults also spoke to the teenagers about their own issues with body image and the topic of pubic hair.
The series was hotly debated on social media and daytime TV, with Good Morning Britain host Kate Garraway saying: “There’s something about the physicality of a stranger being naked in front of a teenager which I just feel uncomfortable about, because of all the things that we read about.”

The gloves are off for Channel 4’s Naked Education.
UK media regulator Ofcom has received 1,297 complaints about the controversial body image show, as anger grows at a format that parades naked adults in front of young teenagers.
The complaints were a combined figure for the first two episodes of the six-part season, which broadcasts on Channel 4 in the UK on Tuesday nights.
Presented by Anna Richardson, the show depicts full-frontal nudity before the 9Pm watershed, a threshold in the UK that protects young viewers from potentially harmful content.
Ofcom is yet to decide whether it will launch an investigation into Naked Education, but Channel 4 has robustly defended the format, which is made by All3Media-owned Betty TV.
Ian Katz, Channel 4’s Chief Content Officer, said Naked Education‘s ambition to confront body image anxiety was “valuable public service broadcasting.”
“Anyone who suggests that the Channel 4 show Naked Education promotes...

March represented Itvx’s best streaming month, with 282 million streams, up 100 million year-on-year. Itx offers dramas such as The Twelve, Without Sin and A Spy Among Friends. From its archive content, early 2000s drama Footballers’ Wives is the top performing show, with One Tree Hill the top U.S. boxset. Love Island and Unforgotten are also singled out as drivers.

U.K. media regulator Ofcom is considering launching an investigation into “Naked Education,” a Channel 4 show in which teenagers are confronted with naked adults in a classroom in the name of body positivity.
The show, which is produced by U.K. production company Betty, first aired on April 4. Ofcom revealed yesterday it had received 930 complaints about the show, by far the highest number of complaints for any U.K. broadcast in the past week.
The nature of the complaints were not disclosed but Ofcom has told Variety it is weighing up an investigation into the broadcast. “We are assessing the complaints against our broadcasting rules, but are yet to decide whether or not to investigate,” said a spokesperson.
The show, which Betty describes as “a body-positive, educational series aiming to normalise all body types,” includes a segment in which a group of teenagers aged between 14 and 16 sit in a...
