When a high-profile CEO is murdered on the eve of his company's corporate event in Malta - a high stakes ballroom competition between senior executives - Detective Bailey is sent undercover as one of the contestants. The only problem? She can't dance. To convincingly compete, she must team up with charismatic and free-spirited performer Sebastian Moore. But with a killer on the loose and a growing list of suspects, it's going to take more than a little fancy footwork to solve this case.
- Constance Bailey, who prefers to be referred to by her surname, is a detective with the police department in Lorimar Cove, New York. Despite getting the job done, she has not even been considered for a promotion in five years in not being a team player, she, having gone through three partners in three years, preferring to do all the work herself in her obsessive compulsiveness. Her superior, Captain Kelly, decides to take a chance on her in giving her an overseas assignment in Malta in conjunction with Interpol as a favor to an important constituent, Senator Aston: to investigate the mysterious death of the senator's brother, corporate business owner Mark Aston, which could be murder. There is a time constraint as if it was murder, many of the suspects would disperse quickly after the event, the reason for Aston being in Malta: an annual dance competition among his executives. Unaware of it until she arrives in Malta, Bailey is to go undercover as a contestant in the competition, her partner and undercover husband, hired by Sgt. Ana Spiteri of the local police, Bailey's local liaison, being actor, dancer, dance instructor and ladies man Sebastian Moore. Bailey realizes that in order to be credible as a contestant, she, a non-dancer, will have to trust Sebastian on the dance front. But as she and Sebastian proverbially and literally chase their leads, the suspects narrowed down to a handful of executives and fellow competitors who had the opportunity and professional motive to want their boss dead, Mark's less than grieving widow Mary Aston, and Judy Maxwell, the hotel maid who discovered Mark's dead body, Bailey may find the most difficult aspect of the case is dealing with her latest partner Sebastian, a detective show aficionado who is treating the assignment like his latest gig rather than a real life potential murder.—Huggo
