- The sudden death of a secretarial student and the shooting of a doctor appear unconnected, but Morse suspects otherwise.
- Oxford in the 1960s :- Shabby but sharp young detective constable Morse comes to work with the experienced D.I. Thursday and is perplexed by the death of twenty-year old Margaret Bell from a supposed heart attack. Then Dr. Cartwright, partner of her G.P. Bill Prentice, is shot dead. His widow Helen and her father Professor Sloan have another problem with her younger sister, the unstable epileptic Pamela, whose child they mind. Morse also finds a connection between Margaret's boyfriend and his tutor, Sloan, who has been receiving letters calling him a murderer. Furthermore, the latest victim of a spate of Post Office robberies seems to have been involved with Cartwright in supplying illegal drugs to the likes of Margaret. Reactionary Chief Superintendent Bright disapproves of Morse's maverick sleuthing and wants him off the case but Morse uses his love of puzzles and former experience with code breaking at the Royal Signal Corps to draw all the threads together and solve the case.—don @ minifie-1
- DC Morse investigates the sudden death of 20 year-old secretarial student Margaret Bell. The pathologist's initial diagnosis is that she suffered a heart attack. Her doctor, Bill Prentiss, says she had a congenital heart defect but should not have had a heart attack if she was taking her medication. When Dr. Prentiss' partner, Dr. Frank Cartwright, is found shot in the head Morse believes the deaths must be connected. Morse traces a bicycle found at the scene of Cartwright's death to the Rev. Monkford who clearly isn't being truthful with him. It's all linked to blackmail, drug dealing and an illicit love affair. There's a new officer in charge at the station, Chief Superintendent Superintendent Bright, a no-nonsense disciplinarian who doesn't think Morse fits in or is suitable for the CID. That is, until Morse solves the complex crime.—garykmcd
