On March 12, 2024, Neve Campbell announced her return for the seventh installment as Sidney Prescott via Instagram. She also announced the movie will be directed by Kevin Williamson, who wrote the script for the first, second, and fourth movies of the franchise.
This will be the first film in the franchise that's directed by Kevin Williamson, who wrote Scream (1996), Scream 2 (1997), and Scream 4 (2011).
Melissa Barrera will not reprise her role in due to her statements on social media regarding the Israel-Hamas War. Her on-screen sister, Jenna Ortega was announced to have exited the series less than 24 hours later, citing scheduling conflicts.
According to Skeet Ulrich, the idea was for Sam to finally embrace her inner darkness in the finale of this trilogy.
"Exactly that. I was hoping for exactly that, and that's sort of the idea that was pitched to me a couple years ago," the actor says. "That it was a three-movie arc, with that in mind. Now, I never saw any of the drafts of seven or anything that.' And I don't know, I mean, it's possible that it didn't include any of that as well. But yeah, that was my hope is that if it was going to mean anything, that it directly impacted the plot."
Melissa Barrera (who played Sam Carpenter in Scream (2022) and Scream VI) was fired by production company Spyglass Media Group for social media posts that were interpreted as antisemitic.
