- Deacon hates parties and watches Old Yeller every birthday, so naturally Juliette plans a surprise party for him. Rayna tells Teddy their daughter knows about Peggy, and Rayna will not cover for him like she did with the press. Despite filing in another county, the divorce is all over the tabloids and the paparazzi are all over Rayna and her girls. A crisis manager tells Rayna not to be seen in public with any man but her dad, but Rayna defiantly has Watty take her to Deacon's party. Rayna wrote a special song and Juliette says cattily that she's going to sing for Deacon, only she has to leave when her mother gets drunk. Teddy appoints Coleman as Deputy Mayor, infuriating Rayna's dad Lamar. Avery is in the studio and tells Dominic the music isn't right, but doesn't realize Dominic's responses are recorded. . . he isn't even there. Gunnar finds a gun in his brother's bag and Scarlett hits the roof. Scarlett gets Deacon to the party (attended by music celebs) on the pretext of finally hearing her and Gunnar sing. Two detectives pick Gunnar up at the party. Juliette gives Deacon an old yeller (yellow) dog.—A. Farley

Juliette plans a party for Deacon's birthday and they get an A-list guest roster. Juliette meets her mom's addiction counselor Dante but says she doesn't have time to meet with him while she plans the party. They enlist Scarlett to get him to the party at the Bluebird. She says she hates birthday parties and usually watches "Old Yeller." Juliette says just to get him there and that she can sing too.
Juliette works on a new song and chats with Dante who wants to know why she asked her mom to stay with her if she doesn't want to be part of the recovery process. Juliette says she's the check-writing part. Juliette learns about the Rayna-Teddy business.
Rayna confronts Teddy about Peggy Kenter and says to keep her away from the girls. She then goes to Tandy to tell her that she and Teddy are divorcing and that he's sleeping with Peggy. Tandy asks about the "Deacon of it all." Rayna says things are strange with him right now but her priority is the girls. At the grocery store the girls see the news about the divorce in the tabloids. They notice people staring and talking about her. Tandy buys all the magazines. She and Tandy explain about the misinformation of tabloids and she says she's not sleeping with Deacon.
Rayna meets with a crisis counselor who asks if she slept with Liam or Deacon while she was married. Rayna balks. The crisis counselor tells her to stay away from men. Glen says she won't be going to his party then. She didn't even know he was having a party.
Teddy calls Peggy and says he's being told they have to distance themselves from one another and he doesn't want that and they'll figure it out.
At her daughter's ballet class Rayna deals with another mother/old high school friend who tries to be nice but is all catty and mean. As they leave they are attacked by the paparazzi. It frightens the girls.
Rayna tells Tandy she's going to hole up and write. Tandy offers a shoulder.
Teddy meets the press about the tabloids. He defends Rayna's honor and says neither of them are cheaters. he then announces he's appointing Peggy Kenter to a position in his administration.
Rayna's dad comes to visit and he says he came to say he was sorry and that he thought Teddy being mayor would be a win for a family. She tells him she's going to lay low until the reporters tire of her story and she can walk down the street without embarrassing her kids. He tells her she did nothing wrong and to have no shame and hold her head high and the people that care about her know her and the rest can go to hell.
Scarlett cleans and tries to break her writer's block. In the process of gathering Jason's laundry they find his gun. Gunnar goes to talk to him. He shows him the gun and confronts him about lying. Jason says he wants to forget about his past but it won't forget about him. Gunnar throws the gun in a lake. They fight and Jason says Gunnar owes him a life that's supposed to be his. Gunnar stalks off and says not to call again to get bailed out.
Deacon and Coleman talk about his birthday and then brings up the Rayna business. Deacon says he found out the way the whole world did.
Scarlett shows up at Deacon's with a fancy birthday cupcake. She tells him that she's playing with Gunnar at the Bluebird and he offers to come and see her.
Avery buys some new gear and runs into Watty White. He asks his advice about he change of his sound with his new producer. He says he's not sure it's what he should be doing. Watty says "should" shouldn't be part of it.
Deacon shows up at the Bluebird on schedule. He walks into his surprise party. Everyone is holding fans wit his face on them. He tries to wak out but Scarlett stops him. He says hello to everone including real country stars Pam Tillis, Kip Moore and Vince Gill.
Scarlett and Gunnar perform a lovely ballad. Juliette is impressed as is everyone else. Avery shows up but he's not on the list. He spies Gunnar and Scarlett singing.
Rayna sits at home. She calls up Watty and asks him to swing by so she can play him something.
Lamar and Teddy meet in Teddy's office. Lamar wishes Teddy treated Rayna better. Teddy says he did and it wasn't enough. He says if Lamar has any real business to get down to it. Lamar has some appointment suggestions including Hank Tully as deputy mayor. Teddy says he'll consider it. Lamar wants more. Teddy says he took an oath to protect the best interests of the city and he hopes they align with Lamar's. Lamar says an oath is like a vow.
Rayna and Watty show up to the party. Deacon says it now really is a surprise party.
The Feds show up to talk to Gunnar.
Rayna chats with Vince and Watty and Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys. Juliette tells Rayna she needs a new publicist. Rayna says she has a song to sing. Juliette says she'll be singing so she'll see if there's time. Deacon goes to give a speech and, surreptitiously, Juliette's mother has some champagne. And really enjoys it. To the point that she needs to be pulled off the floor and poured into a car.
Peggy comes to see Teddy and says it was smart for him to appoint her as a financial consultant. He says they'll meet with his staff once a week, all business. Peggy takes off her coat to get down to a different kind of business.
Rayna pays tribute to Deacon with her beautiful new song with help from Watty White and Pam Tillis.
As she sings "pour me something stronger" we see Juliette put her mother to bed. She apologizes for ruining her 9th birthday party.
We cut back to the club. Deacon looks at Rayna meaningflully. Scarlett looks around for Gunnar.
We then cut to the morgue. The coroner pulls back a sheet and we see Gunnar tearfully ID his dead brother.
Dante shows up and he and Juliette have a heart to heart. She tells him about her 9th birthday party. She had never had one before. Her mom rented out an ice cream parlor. But then her mom spent all the money on drugs and they had to cancel the party and she wasn't even sorry. Juliette ran off. When she came home she found her mother passed out with a lit cigarette. She thought about leaving her there and letting the house catch fire. Instead, she put out the cigarette.She admits that she wanted her mother to die. She asks if he thnks he can really help. He says he does.
Back at the party Deacon says he wishes she'd told him about the divorce. She apologizes and says she didn't want to drag him into it. He asks how she is. She says she doesn't know, looking at a world full of question marks and trying to take care of everybody. He says it made for a pretty song. They clasp hands. She says she wants to do right by him. She wishes him a happy birthday and leaves.
Avery returns the expensive guitar.
Deacon comes home to find a gift from Juliette: a dog. An Old Yeller dog. He says he doesn't want it. Emily, Juliette's assistant, says to just love it.
Teddy asks Coleman in and apologizes for everything that happened and asks him to be his deputy mayor. He says he wants no part of the way Lamar does business and figures Coleman feels the same way so they'd make a good team. Coleman accepts.
Scarlett waits up for Gunnar. He comes in and breaks the news that Jason was beaten to death. Gunnar blames him for kicking him out and tossing his gun saying he had no way to defend himself. Scarlett says it wasn't his fault and comforts him. Which turns into kissing him and then leads to doing other stuff with him.
