This animated series is one of the planned TV series produced by James Gunn and Peter Safran for DC Studios announced in 2022. First introduced in Weird War Tales #93 (November 1980), the comic book series focused on Frankenstein's monster teaming with a werewolf, a vampire, and a gorgon to fight Nazis in World War II. This series has the distinction of being the first DCU project that Gunn and Safran gave a green light to, with Gunn having penned the series. In addition, the series is being cast with voice actors who could also play their characters in a live-action project down the road.
Despite portraying his father, Frank Grillo (Rick Flag, Sr) is only 14 years older than Joel Kinnaman (Rick Flag).

He previously played as Barry Allen/The Flash in Batman: The Brave and the Bold (TV Series 2008-2011), Oliver Queen/Green Arrow in Young Justice (TV Series 2010-2022), Injustice: Gods Among Us (Video Game 2013), Infinite Crisis (Video Game 2015) and Injustice 2 (Video Game 2017), Clark Kent/Superman in Justice League: War (Video 2014), Van Wayne in Powerless (TV Series 2016-2017), Mr. Nobody in Doom Patrol (TV Series 2019-2023), The Joker/Clayface in Harley Quinn (TV Series 2019-) and Alfred in DC Batman: The Audio Adventures (Podcast Series 2021-).
It is DC Comics super villain Amanda Waller who assembles the Creature Commandos in this adaptation. However, in the comics, the team was originally conceived by Project M - a World War II government project creating specialized soldiers (with M standing for "monster"). They were led by Lt. Matthew Shrieve, who was portrayed as an antagonist on Arrow (2012).
