Lydia Deetz, her stepmother Delia and her daughter Astrid stand over a casket, the burial services in progress. We can barely make out who the funeral is for but there he is on the headstone: Charles Deetz. While Charles was once part of the Beetlejuice sequel when the ghost with the most was to “go Hawaiian”, he was written entirely out of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice…for reasons that will soon be obvious.
Despite the original’s and sequel’s dalliances with the afterlife, Jeffrey Jones will not be in Beetlejuice – or pretty much any other legitimate movie – following his disgraceful tumble from his small but reliable spotlight. Perfectly fitting into prestigious period pieces and goofball funny flicks. Jones is a Golden Globe nominee with consistent work – a mix of villain, comedic and at times patriarchal roles, Jeffrey Jones went from Ferris Bueller baddie to Who’s Your Caddy?
So let’s find out: Wtf Happened to…...

10. Altered Carbon (2018–2020) Fell Flat After S1
For all the cyberpunk connoisseurs, Altered Carbon was a breath of fresh air. A phenomenal setting, compelling characters, and engaging mystery — it had it all. The hype for Season 2 was real, but halfway through, the showrunner changed… Let’s just say that very few people even finished watching the new series.
9. Heroes (2006–2010) Was Gone for Good After S1
When Heroes Season 1 premiered in 2006, it became an instant nationwide cultural phenomenon. Everyone and their grandma were talking about it non-stop, and it felt like the new TV show was there to stay. Indeed, it stayed around for three more seasons, but those were so terrible the audience decided to ignore their existence.
8. Sleepy Hollow (2013–2017) Lost Its Essence After S1
Sleepy Hollow Season 1 got all the creepy fairy tale/legend fans excited. Unfortunately, after hyping the audience up, the show changed a showrunner and went into oblivion.

Writer/director Lindsey Anderson Beer’s Pet Sematary prequel Pet Sematary: Bloodlines didn’t go over well with a lot of genre fans – including myself – but it was a big success for the Paramount+ streaming service. As The Hollywood Reporter notes, “The movie debuted as the No. 1 title on Paramount+ and quickly broke the streamer’s record for the most-watched Paramount+ original movie within the first 30 days of a film’s release in the U.S.” So it’s no surprise that Paramount has renewed their first-look deal with Anderson Beer and her production banner Lab Brew, allowing the filmmaker to continue developing a slate of projects for the studio. This slate includes the new version of Sleepy Hollow that Beer was said to be working on back in 2022.

Paramount is heading to Sleepy Hollow with a brand new feature film take on the classic Headless Horseman tale, with Lindsey Anderson Beer (Pet Sematary: Bloodlines) announced to direct the movie back in 2022. But is that project still happening, now two years later?
The Hollywood Reporter lets us know this afternoon that Paramount Pictures has renewed its first-look deal with Lindsey Anderson Beer, and one of the projects on the upcoming slate is the aforementioned Sleepy Hollow movie that was originally announced two years ago.
THR details, “Additional projects on the development slate include… Sleepy Hollow with Anderson Beer attached to write, direct, and produce alongside Todd Garner of Broken Road.”
You can learn more about the slate over on The Hollywood Reporter. It also includes a supernatural thriller titled Here Comes the Dark from the writers of Don’t Worry Darling.

Paramount Pictures has renewed its first-look deal with Lindsey Anderson Beer and her production banner Lab Brew.
In re-upping the deal, the studio has also picked up Here Comes the Dark, a supernatural thriller spec script by Shane and Carey Van Dyke, the duo who co-wrote the 2022 thriller Don’t Worry Darling. Anderson Beer and Lab Brew will produce.

Robert Downey Jr. has been receiving congratulations for winning his first Oscar at the 96th Academy Award. His long-time friend and fellow actor Johnny Depp also extended his congratulatory remarks to the Oppenheimer star. It’s a fairly big month on Prime Video in March, at least compared to the other streaming service offerings! There are are two major films arriving on Amazon’s streamer. The first is a remake of the Patrick Swayze action classic Road House. Stepping into the late Swayze’s shoes? A crazy-jacked Jake Gyllenhaal, who really seemed to want to go the extra mile for this project.
The other big film coming to Prime Video is Ricky Stanicky, and the plot sounds really fun! It follows three friends who have always blamed their mistakes on an imaginary guy called Ricky Stanicky. When they have to finally introduce people to Stanicky, they decide to hire a washed-up actor (John Cena) to impersonate him. Hilarity ensues, maybe? But if neither of those make your watchlist, there’s also the return of the animated hit series Invincible.

Exclusive: What does it take to become Civil Rights icon Martin Luther King Jr? David Oyelowo took on the challenge for Ava DuVernay’s underrated 2014 film Selma. It’s all there in Becoming King, a new documentary coming to Paramount+.
The 1965 march through the segregationist state of Alabama resulted in brutal beatings by local authorities and white vigilante groups as activist marchers crossed the Edmund Pettus Bridge en route to the state house in Montgomery. They didn’t get there, that day. Called Bloody Sunday, the nationally televised footage was shocking and shameful, and it left activist and future congressman John Lewis with a fractured skull. Six days later, President Lyndon Johnson had seen enough and gave a nationwide TV address pledging support for a National Voting Rights bill that became law after he introduced it in Congress. It was a milestone moment.

Author Mary Shelley has inspired horror creators since the 1800s, but never like Lisa Frankenstein. Zelda Williams brings Diablo Cody's undead teen romance to life like the second coming of early Tim Burton, harvesting an uncanny gothic romance from spare human parts. It's caught somewhere between Riverdale, Edward Scissorhands, and Warm Bodies, a good crossroads to call home. Williams and Cody inject surges of teen girl empowerment through their morbidly adorable Frankenstein tale, which can feel like a hammy 1980s sitcom, yet transcends expectations with an avalanche of campy, almost wall-breaking silliness.

From the mind of Diablo Cody comes Lisa Frankenstein. Directed by Zelda Williams, the film stars Kathryn Newton, Liza Soberano, Cole Sprouse, Carla Gugino and Joe Chrest. With the Burtonesque visuals and deadpan dialogue, it’s an ambitious swing that will find an audience with some, and may not land with others. The film is headed to theaters February 9.

I recently recapped the fascinating Best Actor race of 2003, in which saw Sean Penn in “Mystic River” win the first of his two Best Actor Oscars. (He would prevail again five years later for “Milk.”)
Regarding Penn’s first victory, he faced stiff competition not only from Bill Murray in “Lost in Translation” but also Johnny Depp in “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.” Depp hadn’t initially been considered much of a threat — until he pulled off a huge upset at the Screen Actors Guild Awards.
A dedicated Gold Derby reader has since asked me how Depp managed to surprise at SAG. Figuring that others might be wondering the same thing, I thought that I would offer everyone in awards land my Top 5 reasons why. And here they are.

After more than five years, Netflix's long-awaited reimagining of "Avatar: The Last Airbender" is finally coming to fruition in February. The live-action series will take the beloved Nickelodeon animated show and attempt to bring it to life in a new medium for a new generation. Or, presumably, the same generation of fans that loved the original and who are hoping to capture that same magic. While the final verdict has yet to be determined, Netflix used every tool at its disposal to bring the airbenders, earthbenders, waterbenders, and firebenders to life. That included borrowing a few tricks learned from another one of the streamer's big hit shows, "Stranger Things."
Entertainment Weekly recently published a comprehensive preview of the live-action "Avatar: The Last Airbender" series. In speaking about bringing the firebending abilities to life, it was explained that "Stranger Things" season 4 had a direct influence on that front. The same...

Kamar de los Reyes, a veteran film, TV and voice actor best known for his portrayal of Antonio Vega on the ABC soap opera One Life to Live and as the villain Raul Menendez in the video game Call of Duty: Black Ops II, died Sunday in Los Angeles after a brief battle with cancer, a rep for the family confirmed to Deadline. He was 56.
Born in Puerto Rico but raised in Las Vegas, de los Reyes moved to Los Angeles in the late ’80s to begin an acting career which spanned the next 30-plus years. In 1994, de los Reyes originated the role of Pedro Quinn in the critically acclaimed off-Broadway play, Blade to the Heat, which led to the role of Ferdinand in George C. TV crossovers have been around almost as long as the medium of television itself. Before the advent of modern shared universes, they were mostly just a lark intended to goose viewership. When "Adventures of Superman" star George Reeves turned up as the show's namesake in the 1957 "I Love Lucy" episode "Lucy and Superman," it was all a big in-joke and not some kind of serious declaration that Lucy and Ricky Ricardo somehow existed in the same universe as the Man of Steel. Nearly 60 years later, when "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" Detective Jake Peralta (Andy Samberg) crossed paths with Jess Day (Zooey Deschanel) from "New Girl," it was a similar bit of fun ... assuming you could refrain from thinking too hard about the in-universe implications.
Speaking of not thinking too hard about canonical implications, Hart Hanson's playful yet by and large grounded Fox procedural "Bones" likewise crossed over with, of all shows,...

"Avatar: The Last Airbender" is one of the most acclaimed and beloved cartoons of all time. This is a show with incredible worldbuilding, visual style, and character development.
Despite the success of the animated series (and its equally great sequel series), "The Last Airbender" has had terrible luck with adaptations. First, there was the best-forgotten M. Night Shyamalan live-action movie which missed everything people liked about the show. Now, it is Netflix's turn to try with a TV adaptation titled, well, "Avatar: The Last Airbender."
Not only did this latest adaptation have to deal with the awfully poor expectations from fans, but it also suffered a devastating blow early on when original creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante Dimartino departed due to creative differences. Granted, following that piece of bad news we also got the creation of Avatar Studios and multiple other Avatar projects in development, but the move...

“Avatar: The Last Airbender” creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante Dimartino spent two years developing a live-action adaptation of the animated classic for Netflix before they shocked fans by announcing their exit from the project due to creative differences. The decision left Albert Kim, best known as a writer on “Pantheon” and an executive producer on “Sleepy Hollow,” as the live-action series’ showrunner without the support of the franchise’s original visionaries. He recently told Entertainment Weekly that it was “absolutely” daunting to stick with the show without them.
“You’d have to be an idiot not to be intimidated a little bit,” Kim said. “My first reaction after ‘Hell yeah!’ was ‘Holy shit! Do I really want to do this? Is there a way to improve upon the original?’ Whenever you tackle something that’s already beloved by millions of fans, you have to ask yourself those questions.”

The grind is as real as it gets when you're working on network television. Where an intense film shoot can require 12 to 16-hour days for several months, a TV show demands the same daily time commitment year in and year out. Even decades of back-breaking work in action movies couldn't prepare Sylvester Stallone for the "brutal" reality of making a television series when he starred in Taylor Sheridan's mafia drama "Tulsa King."
You can imagine, then, that Emily Deschanel was more than ready for a break after a decade-plus of playing crime-solving forensics expert Temperance Brennan on "Bones." Hart Hanson's procedural was the rare series to survive the gauntlet that was Fox in the 2000s, ultimately spanning 12 seasons, 246 episodes, three U.S. presidential administrations, and a confusing-but-amusing crossover with "Sleepy Hollow." "Bones" ran for so long that it only ended a year before Deschanel's sister, Zooey Deschanel, finished...

You’re a wizard indeed–and only a wizard could work the sort of spell that was cast over children and adults all over the world beginning in the late ‘90s, turning the wildly successful Harry Potter books (we’re talking 120 million copies sold here) into one of the most profitable franchises ever.
With J.K. Rowling watching over the production diligently (sometimes to a fault), Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone aka …Sorcerer’s Stone was a marvel of an adaptation. And what eventually arrived didn’t come from a burly half-giant, but rather a wide-eyed cast of newcomers, a visionary crew conjuring the proper vision and the guy who directed Adventures in Babysitting…
So put on your sorting hat and head for Platform 9 ¾ as we find out…Wtf Happened to this movie?!
The making of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone goes back to 1997, the same year the novel was published.

The Hollywood baby boom continues. Nikki Reed and Ian Somerhalder are now parents of two, the former announced on her Instagram Story on June 29. "A few weeks ago we welcomed our son on what can only be described as one of the most beautiful days of my life," the "Sleepy Hollow" actor wrote over an image of herself cozying with the baby, whose face is not visible. "Born at home in water and surrounded by so much love, in an instant my heart doubled in size."
Reed noted that she has "very strong boundaries with social media, especially when it comes to children and what I choose to put out into the world." That's why, she said, "I wanted to share first so I can say thank you so much in advance for honoring those boundaries, and for sending positivity, kindness and Love." She went on to thank her midwife...

Lionsgate and Saban Films will unleash the alligator horror movie The Flood this summer (watch the trailer here), and the film’s official MPA rating has been handed in this week.
The Flood has been Rated “R” for…
“Violence, some gore, and language throughout.”
The action-horror movie hits Theaters, On Demand and Digital on July 14, 2023. The premise suggests a Syfy-style monster movie – alligators inside a prison – but the execution looks a lot closer to Alexandre Aja’s Crawl than anything you’d find on the Syfy network.
Think Crawl meets Assault on Precinct 13.
The Flood is directed by Brandon Slagle (Frost, The Dawn) and co-written by Chad Law (Section 8, Close Range, 6 Bullets) and Josh Ridgway (The Sector, Howlers).
In the film, “A horde of giant hungry alligators is unleashed on a group of in-transit prisoners and their guards after a massive hurricane floods Louisiana.”

The year was 2001. Catherine Zeta-Jones had yet to do the table read for Rob Marshall’s “Chicago” or even meet co-star Renée Zellweger. But she recalls being in Toronto, walking down a long hallway and entering costume designer Colleen Atwood’s fitting space: “There was an explosion of costumes and fishnet tights.”
And thus an enduring collaboration between thespian and costume designer was born. Both would go on to win Oscars for their work on the film. Zeta-Jones would call on Atwood to design her outfit for the 2002 Academy Awards when the actor was days away from giving birth.
It would be two decades before they officially reunited for Netflix’s “Wednesday.”
For this collaboration, Atwood had to bring back the iconic Addams Family, first made famous by cartoonist Charles Addams. Since then, there have been countless iterations of the creepy, kooky family. Atwood, whose credits include Tim Burton’s...

“Yellowjackets” has served as a great career boost for actresses like Sophie Thatcher, who landed the lead in this year’s “The Boogeyman,” thanks to the hit series. The older actors, including Melanie Lynskey, Christina Ricci, Juliette Lewis and Tawny Cypress, come to the hit Showtime series with their own rich filmography.

Sophie Thatcher in “The Boogeyman” (2023)
Thatcher, who plays hard partying Teen Natalie on “Yellowjackets,” stars as a high schooler trying to protect her little sister from a sinister entity in this adaptation of the short story by Stephen King.
It’s now in theaters.
Jasmin Savoy Brown in “Scream VI” (2023)
Brown, who plays Teen Taissa, has a bigger role as Mindy Meeks-Martin in this sequel to 2022’s “Scream.

This story about the production design of “Wednesday” first appeared in the Comedy Series issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
Creepy. Kooky. Spooky. Ooky. All of these adjectives are naturally in play when you’re adapting a spinoff series of “The Addams Family” — even more so when Tim Burton is your boss. For “Wednesday” production designer Mark Scruton, that made him as happy as Wednesday Addams witnessing a torture chamber.
“When I got this gig, I very consciously did not watch any of [the past adaptations],” Scruton said. “I did go back to the Charles Addams cartoons very specifically, but we wanted to take it back to that original core look and aesthetic. Tim responds to his heart and he’s a minimalist and likes things very precise and composed, rather than lots of background fluff, so it was a great jumping-off point for us.”

The set of Fox’s Sleepy Hollow had “grueling” working conditions, confusion and “creative floundering” among its leadership, and disparate treatment between its white male and Black female lead, according to Burn It Down.
The Hollywood exposé from Maureen Ryan, published by HarperCollins and which hit shelves on Tuesday, alleges that Nicole Beharie and Tom Mison — who played detective Abbie Mills and Ichabod Crane, respectively — “did not want to have a whole lot to do with each other,” according to one source who worked on the show, allegedly resulting in Mison’s character’s famous “courtly” bow, because the co-stars did not want to hug each other.
That also allegedly translated to their onscreen narratives, according to showrunner Clifton Campbell, who told Ryan that Mison and Beharie “believed that the relationship between the characters should not evolve into a romantic relationship,” despite fan calls for one. (Neither Beharie nor Mison commented for the book.

Saban Films will release alligator horror movie The Flood this summer, and our friends over at Upcoming Horror Movies have shared new images and new poster art this week.
Check out the new images and art below.
Casper Van Dien (Starship Troopers, Alita: Battle Angel, Sleepy Hollow), Nicky Whelan (Hall Pass,...

Filmmakers Sergei Spirin and Andrei Beresnev’s spiritual drama Iyov follows a lone individual named Job who, in the aftermath of a profound loss, searches for meaning as he battles depression. Visually, the co-directors evoke the work of Emmanuel Lubezki, whose awe-inspiring wide-lensed work with Terrence Malick and Alejandro Iñárritu similarly draws upon profound philosophical themes, with characters negotiating their place amongst immense environments. Spirin and Beresnev’s tale sees Job’s journey throughout several stunning locations across Georgia, highlighting the beauty of the world he struggles to remain a part of. Dn is delighted to premiere Iyov on our pages today and joined Spirin and Beresnev for a comprehensive conversation about their journey creating the film, covering the personal story of loss that inspired it, the inspiration of Lubezki and Malick, and their working approach to creating beautiful cinematography.

Maureen Ryan, author of the upcoming Hollywood exposé Burn It Down, says a number of major networks, studios and entertainment companies responded with “crickets” when she reached out about allegations regarding their TV shows.
The veteran entertainment reporter and contributing editor at Vanity Fair appears on the latest episode of The Hollywood Reporter‘sTV’s Top 5 podcast, where she speaks about her process for her new book, which explores patterns of harassment and bias in entertainment following an excerpt about the behind-the-scenes toxicity and bias on Lost.
During the more-than-30-minute discussion, Ryan details the experience of putting together around four years worth of reporting that covers a number of (some now ended) shows like Lost, Sleepy Hollow, The Goldbergs and Saturday Night Live. “One of the things that’s threaded through the book” that shocked her the most, she says, were the “crickets” she frequently got when she reached out about allegations.

After his quotes about writing for Lost appeared in a Vanity Fair book excerpt Tuesday, veteran scribe Javier Grillo-Marxuach doubled down via social media by sharing more of his experience on the ABC drama.
Grillo-Marxuach, who is described in Maureen Ryan’s Hollywood book as “the only person from the show’s original nucleus of writers still in the writers room in season two,” posted his own essay that he hopes will deter “future abusers.”
“If Lost is so great a work of art as to continue to be a topic of discussion after all these years, then it is cruel to expect those of us who were there to remain silent as to how the show was made,” Grillo-Marxuach blogged. “Lost succeeded because of the sustained contribution of many, many artists, many of them geniuses in their own right, and many of whom were treated quite badly and then...
