It's a veritable hit parade this episode as Rayna, Juliette, and Deacon are hitting the road. Peggy and Teddy are hitting the sheets. Avery and Gunnar are hitting each other. Juliette's getting You Tube hits. And Rayna and Teddy are hitting the skids.
Alright in the night's big storyline we pick up right where we left off with Deacon surprising Rayna, Teddy and company by getting on the plane.
Juliette is really enjoying seeing Rayna so unsettled.
They head to Chicago where they're doing two sold out shows. While there:
-Watty White visits and she tells him Marshall gave her a vanity imprint and she wants to sign some up and coming talent. She asks about those kids she heard in the pilot and he reminds her that's Gunnar and Deacon's niece Scarlett and how they remind him of her and Deacon. At first she's hesitant to move on them since things are so messy with Deacon but by the end of the show she wants to sign 'em.
-Deacon quietly turns up his nose at all the trappings of Juliette's show: dancers, pyro, glitter. And she instantly now hates those things too and wants to be a real artist which she whines about to Glen. He warns her to "stay on brand." Since Juliette never does what she's told she decides that the second night in Chicago in an arena is the perfec place to premiere a soft ballad that she and Deacon wrote the day before called, it seems "Consider Me." It is gorgeous. The crowd responds okay but Glen is livid. He shows her some mean tweets that a critic wrote about her during the show and she gets upset. (Really? A few tweets from one person undoes her?) But then her assistant comes to her and tells her how much she loved it and, what's more, video uploaded from the show has gotten over 100,00 hits in just a few hours. Juliette decides this means it's time to change things up. She likes to be sparkly but she also wants to be serious and wants to take Deacon's advice to stop talking about doing something and just do it. Glen blames Deacon and tells him not to try to turn Juliette into his Rayna substitute. He scoffs, but...
-At first Deacon and Rayna scarcely acknowledge each other. Then, when her new female guitar player-- who she really likes-- needs help learning a specific lick Rayna tries to break the ice by asking Deacon to help show it to her. He seems to soften a bit but then when she brings up how his coming out is kind of messy he stiffens and says he won't get in her way. A few uncomfortable elevator rides later, Deacon decides to take his own advice and stop thinking and just do something and he plants one on Rayna in the elevator. She is taken aback. She paces around in her room for awhile and then texts him to come up. But as he's getting off the elevator he sees someone at Rayna's door...Teddy shows up.
The two of them had some terse conversation the previous day about Deacon being on the road and Teddy got angry. He then ran into Peggy who is getting a divorce. One thing led to another which led to her bedroom. She also points out that he's unhappy and he shouldn't have to work so hard to get someone to love him. They both know what they're doing is wrong so Teddy decides to make it right. He goes to Rayna and points out the flaws in their marriage and says he's tired of waiting for her to love him and he asks for a divorce.
Meanwhile back in Nashville Scarlett is having problems making rent and a low-paying, low interest gig that only nets her and the band $24 each isn't cutting. Simultaneously coincidentally Gunnar hates his new room mates. Scarlett invites to move in with ground rules: he should not walk around naked in the kitchen, she will not play banjo in the shower. (Yes, this makes no sense. Moving on.) Marilyn has many activities and gigs scheduled for Avery including shooting a "day in the life with...' type spot on a cable show. While showing the crew around town he brings them to his and Scarlet's house. She storms out angry and demands the money he owes from her. He flippantly says since the broke up and she still lives there she can basically eat it. When he returns to apologize for grandstanding with the cameras, give her the money, and to say he misses her and hopes they can still be friends, he notices Gunnar in the house and says it's late to be working. She says they aren't. Avery flips and starts talking about Gunnar moving in on "my woman." Scarlett points out that she is not "his." Gunnar rightly stand up for Scarlett and tells Avery not to disrespect her and he also points out that what he's doing with Marilyn is gross and he knows it and this is making Avery hate himself. Avery gets in one punch before Gunnar knocks him to the ground with a right, left, and punch to the stomach combo. Avery turns tail and runs. He heads back to Marilyn's bloody and bowed. He packs a bag and says that she is not his girlfriend and if she needs to drop him as a client she should. She protests that they are using each other. He says he's done and that there's got to be a better way and storms out.
