Star power is always a draw at the American Film Market, led this year by Rachel Weisz playing Elizabeth Taylor in See-Saw’s “A Special Relationship.”
It’s a roll of the dice for independently financed projects. A pair of Diane Keaton projects — “Book Club” and “Poms” — were major draws at the last two AFMs. “Book Club” went up for sale in 2017 was a major success with more than $100 million in worldwide grosses last year. “Poms,” which was unveiled a year ago, failed to get much traction with $16 million.
A select list of anticipated titles at the American Film Market:
Losing Clementine
Director: Lucia Puenzo
Producers: Sentient Films, Freckle Films
Key Cast: Jessica Chastain
Logline: The story follows world-renowned artist who, after flushing away her meds, gives herself 31 days to tie up loose ends before killing herself.

There’s no shortage of eye-catching projects on offer at the 40th American Film Market, but will the event, much-maligned by the industry as a schlockfest in recent years due to a paucity of high-profile deal making, rediscover some of its former buzz?
Hot titles include FilmNation’s road movie comedy Dog starring Channing Tatum as an Army Ranger, a pic that will also mark the actor’s directing debut, Miramax’s Cash Truck with Jason Statham, which sees Guy Ritchie return further to his filmmaking roots after Disney summer hit Aladdin, MadRiver International’s Zac Efron-starring comedy King Of The Jungle, See-Saw’s A Special Relationship, which stars Rachel Weisz as Elizabeth Taylor, and Neill Blomkamp’s sci-fi Inferno with Taylor Kitsch for Agc Studios. And there’s plenty more notable packages – see our full rundown of 25 of this year’s hot Afm titles for a more extensive list.

A combination of star vehicles and high-octane action pics dominate our 2019 list of hot Afm market debuts.
Several glossy packages have come together in the last week: Channing Tatum is playing an Army Ranger with a canine buddy in road-trip comedy Dog; Rachel Weisz will star as Elizabeth Taylor in activism-focused tale A Special Relationship; Zac Efron is tracking John McAfee in the jungle in comedy King Of The Jungle; and Jessica Chastain will play a tormented artist in Losing Clementine. The market now looks well-stocked with titles that should pique buyers’ interest.
Last year, our Afm list had 3/24 projects with female directors, and it’s the exact same stat this year on our 25-strong roster, so no improvement there.

Sometimes changing very little in a remake is a bold choice. Ask Gus Van Zant, whose 1998 shot-for-shot Psycho redux was met with equal parts derision and disinterest. Director John Favreau’s new remake of The Lion King does less tinkering than his 2016 live-action Jungle Book did, but it never feels pointless, as this summer’s Aladdin did, nor does it feel like one of Tim Burton’s uninspired attempts to shoehorn his personal quirk into films like Dumbo and Alice In Wonderland. The Lion King is the best of these live-action Disney versions to date mostly because it stays so true to its source.
The Lion King is, you’ll recall, the tale of young lion cub Simba (voiced by Jd McCray then Donald Glover) who must accept the title and responsibilities of ‘King of the Jungle’ when his father Mustapha (James Earl Jones in a glorious return) is killed...

2002's Treasure Planet was a passion project for Aladdin directors John Musker and Ron Clements.
Writer-directors John Musker and Ron Clements have a hell of a track record at Disney. As key figures in the studio’s animation renaissance in the 1990s, they brought The Little Mermaid, Aladdin (the original one), and Hercules to the screen before the House of Mouse finally gave them a crack at their pet project – Treasure Planet, an outer-space adaptation of the classic Robert Louis Stevenson novel Treasure Island.
Featuring the voice talents of Joseph Gordon-Levitt, David Hyde Pierce, and Emma Thompson, the 2002 film reimagines Jim Hawkins as the tearaway teenage son of a single mother who obtains a digital treasure map from dying pirate Billy Bones. Fascinated by stories of the fabled Treasure Planet since childhood, Jim jumps at the chance to leave his backwater homeworld and join an outer-space voyage...

In the new romantic comedy “Long Shot,” Charlize Theron plays the current Secretary of State of the United States and a presidential hopeful, and Seth Rogen plays … well, let’s say a “Seth Rogen-type.”
And yeah, we know what you’re thinking. Sounds like a long shot, hence the title. But the film was previously titled “Flarsky,” and Rogen plays Flarsky, which was a nickname given to him by Theron’s character when she would babysit him as a child. Now that she’s a high-powered politician and he a struggling, beltway journalist, she brings him in as a speech writer and slowly forms a relationship with him, despite her hectic schedule.
“We surveyed some constituents to see how they would feel if Kate Middleton started dating Danny DeVito,” an aide says to Theron’s character in the first trailer for the film. “Pretty negative reaction.”

If you’ve ever read one of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Tarzan novels, you know that there has always been a big difference between Tarzan as he is in the movies versus Tarzan in the books. For some reason Hollywood has never really been able to get the character exactly right. As much fun as the Johnny Weissmuller and Lex Barker Tarzan movies are, for example, they really didn’t get close to Burroughs’ concept of the ape man. The real Tarzan didn’t speak Pidgin English for one thing. He actually spoke fluent English and French. He was as at home in an English Tea Room as the son of a British Lord, as he was in the prehistoric land of Pal-ul-don. While the movies showed Tarzan as protector of the animals, and friends with cute chimpanzees, in the books Burroughs present a world where death usually came on four feet,...

The Black List script from Max Borenstein is based on Kenneth Feinberg’s acclaimed memoir. It’s described as being in the vein of Erin Brockovich and Oscar-winning Keaton/Tucci-starrer Spotlight. The story centers on Feinberg, a powerful DC insider lawyer put in charge of the 9/11 Fund. In almost three years of pro bono work on the case, Feinberg fought off the cynicism, bureaucracy and politics associated with administering government funds to victim’s families — and in doing so, discovered what life is worth.

King of the Jungle
Being packaged since 2017, filmmaker tandem Glenn Ficarra & John Requa currently have a lot of items on the docket but King of the Jungle (the salacious true life tale about the dude who gave PC computers a fighting chance against virus with funky names) could begin lensing shortly if the stars align. Featuring Seth Rogen and Michael Keaton canvassing the Belize backdrop, we’re unclear as to the scope of the production (low end would be the 15M range), but Ficarra & Requa who last gave us the underwhelming Whiskey Tango Foxtrot in 2016 (review) could work with a budget size somewhere in-between their underrated Directors’ Fortnight 2009 entry, I Love You Phillip Morris and their follow-up studio items in 2011’s Crazy, Stupid, Love (trailer) and 2015’s Focus (trailer).…...

Exciting news! Tarzan’S Greatest Adventure (1959) is now available on Blu-ray from Warner Archives! Ordering information can be found Here
After Lex Barker carried the mantle clear of Weissmuller’s long shadow, Gordon Scott was free to claim the crown of King of the Jungle. His Tarzan was keen, intelligent, and literate – much as Tarzan’s creator, Edgar Rice Burroughs, had envisioned – and in the aptly named Tarzan’s Greatest Adventure, Scott’s run as the jungle lord reached a peak in what is widely regarded as one of the best entries in the prodigious series of action adventure classics. Tarzan is on a deadly trail, determined to find the diamond hunters (including Anthony Quayle and Sean Connery) who brought terror and death to a peaceful village. But as much as Tarzan is a tracker and avenger, he’s also a protector. An irresponsible gadfly from the so-called civilized world...

Imr International will introduce dark comedy to Cannes buyers.
Johnny Depp has signed on to star in the dark comedy King Of The Jungle that Glenn Ficarra and John Requa will direct based on a true-life story from Wired magazine.
Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski adapted the screenplay from Joshua Davis’s article entitled ‘John McAfee’s Last Stand.
The story centres on the eponymous rogue tech magnate who cashed in his fortune and moved to the jungle in Belize where he established a compound of guns, sex and madness reminiscent of the character Kurtz from Joseph Conrad’s novel Heart Of Darkness.
When the interviewer goes to meet McAfee he encounters paranoia, blurry reality, and murder.
