Amazon MGM Studios announced Wednesday that the sequel movie, which is a co-production with Lionsgate, is looking to begin shooting this spring and will stream on Prime Video. Feig is back to helm the follow-up to his 2018 dark comedy, with Henry Golding, Andrew Rannells, Bashir Salahuddin, Joshua Satine, Ian Ho and Kelly McCormack all reprising their roles from the first feature.
Jessica Sharzer, who penned the initial movie, returned to write the sequel, with Feig and Laeta Kalogridis also contributing to the script. Sharzer’s screenplay for the original film was based on the 2017 novel of the same name by author Darcey Bell.
A Simple Favor 2 sees Stephanie Smothers (Kendrick) and Emily Nelson (Lively) heading to the island of Capri for Emily’s lavish wedding.

The rules are simple: Survive 30 days while being hunted by people attempting to kill you, and win one million dollars. As long as you're with another person, the hunters will leave you alone. This is the proposition presented to Tommy Walcott by a paid-to-be-there Andy Samberg in the Hulu film "Self Reliance." Written, directed, produced, and starring Jake Johnson, "Self Reliance" taps into the thrilling anticipation of David Fincher's "The Game," but with a lighthearted sense of humor and hell of a lot of heart that could only come from the guy who gave us Nick Miller on "New Girl" and one of the best episodes of "Mythic Quest."
Tommy decides to exploit the loophole by paying a transient man named James/Walter (Biff Wiff) to stay with him 24/7. He also encounters a woman named Maddy (Anna Kendrick) who is also playing the game, and who Tommy starts to...

We hope you find this list of the upcoming films of 2024 and their release dates useful and that it helps you plan what you’re going to look forward to over the next twelve months.
The list below gathers all of the titles we know (right now at least) that are coming in 2024 by their current release date. Remember, these dates are subject to change. So, as dates change (and time permits) we...

We had the pleasure of discussing Self Reliance with Jake Johnson and his co-star, Biff Wiff, who, in the film, form an unlikely friendship to keep Johnson’s character from getting killed by mysterious assassins.
Speaking with Johnson and Wiff, we touch on the origin and journey of bringing Self Reliance to screens, how the duo built their on-screen chemistry, and whether Johnson and Wiff could spend 30 days in each other’s company non-stop.
In Self Reliance, Tommy (Johnson), a middle-aged man, is invited into a limo by famous actor Andy Samberg. His dull life takes a thrilling turn when the Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Saturday Night Live alum offers him a chance to win a million dollars in a dark web reality TV show. Here’s the catch: the game involves assassins from all over the world attempting to hunt and kill him for 30 days. However, the rules dictate that...

Radio Silence Productions and Project X Entertainment, which were behind the revival of the Scream franchise with Scream (2022) and last year’s Scream VI, have formed a joint financing pact with studio MRC to fund and produce horror and thriller features, Variety reports. As part of this deal, the companies are aiming to produce two or three genre movies every year.
Radio Silence and Project X also collaborated on Ready or Not and the upcoming Universal vampire movie Abigail (formerly known as Dracula’s Daughter). As for MRC, that studio has been behind such films as Knives Out, Devil, Baby Driver, The Blackening, Saltburn, American Fiction, and Self Reliance.
Radio Silence members Chad Villella, Tyler Gillett, and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin provided the following statement: “To be able to formalize our alliance with Project X and work with a studio in MRC that champions original and fresh films couldn’t be more exciting to us as storytellers.

For those who just watched Hulu’s new movie, Self Reliance, and are looking for a rundown on its shocking plot, this is the place to be.
The recently released film is Jake Johnson’s feature directorial debut. The story follows Tommy, a middle-aged man who is going through a hard time, only to be randomly selected in a dangerous game show that could change his life forever.
While this might sound dangerous to some, it does not stop Tommy from jumping into the deep end.

Jake Johnson’s directorial debut, Self Reliance, is here, but some might misinterpret its ending.
The Hulu movie follows Johnson’s Tommy Walcott, a struggling middle-aged man stumbling through life. He doesn't have a very strong career path, and he’s still not over his ex, who recently broke up with him, and he lives with his mom.
His life gets an injection of excitement when Tommy is picked up by actor Andy Samberg, who tells him that he’s been chosen to participate in a new game. It's later revealed the competition, which is hosted on the Dark Web, requires Tommy to stay alive for 30 days, and if he does, he wins one million dollars.

And now, we wait. The bulk of precursor nominations have poured in, and Oscar voting is newly underway. Aside from the final BAFTA roster, most of what’s left is merely a swift march to January 23, nomination day. A couple of films in particular are making well-timed streaming premieres that function as end-of-the-road campaign strategies.
The contender to stream this week: “Going to Mars: The Nikki Giovanni Project”
This Oscar-shortlisted documentary co-directed by spouses Joe Brewster and Michèle Stephenson, who also made 2013’s “American Promise,” follows the eponymous poet and activist through years of civil-rights evolutions. If Black women can withstand the hardships of Earth, Giovanni posits, maybe they can survive in space, too. “Going to Mars” is more experimental than the average biography, which makes sense for such an elusive figure. The film won a jury prize at Sundance and has an Independent Spirit Award nomination. It’s newly streaming on Max.

Filming is officially underway on “Stranger Things 5,” which is set to be the final season of the hit Netflix series. A behind the scenes photo shared by Netflix earlier this week previewed all the familiar faces who will be back for Season 5 – including David Harbour, Millie Bobby Brown, Winona Ryder and Maya Hawke – but there’s one actor you didn’t see in there.
One of the new characters introduced in “Stranger Things 4” was Eduardo Franco’s Argyle, the stoner employee of Surfer Boy Pizza who ended up playing a pivotal role in the season’s California-set events. Like most characters on the show, audiences ended up falling in love with Argyle, but don’t expect to see the character return in “Stranger Things 5.”
Franco reveals on the Steve Varley Show, “I never got a phone call. So yeah, I think that’s it.”

For better or worse, Jake Johnson knows who he is.
As a “45-year-old white dude,” he says, he knows that opportunities to direct for the big screen aren’t going to come along often. “In terms of directing, I’m not breaking at this point,” Johnson tells Deadline. “I’ve been on TV for too long. I’m not a new, young, exciting talent out of Sundance with a scarf where you go, ‘That’s a beautiful short, let’s see what he has.'” The town has seen what I do.”
So when the opportunity came for the actor to make his directorial debut with Self Reliance, a comedic thriller co-starring Anna Kendrick that premiered at last year’s SXSW, he knew he’d bring all the “tones and ideas” that had been taking up space in his mind for years and squeeze them into one movie.

Through four seasons, the cast of Netflix’s mega-hit Stranger Things has grown so large and unwieldy that it seemed unlikely that every actor would return for the fifth and final season. Well sure enough, we’ve now received confirmation that Stranger Things season 5 will be leaving at least one character out.
In an interview with the Steve Varley Show, actor Eduardo Franco says he never received a call from Netflix, making it unlikely that his character Argyle will return – especially since production on season 5 is now underway again following strike delays.

A lot of people only think of Jake Johnson as the comedic actor who has shown up in a number of big projects over the years. But before all of that, he got his start as a writer in New York City. It’s just his time as a writer was overshadowed by his growing acting career. But for “Self Reliance,” his new Hulu film arriving this week, Johnson is not only returning to writing, but he also directed the film, as well.

News has been slowly coming out about the next season of Stranger Things, which has now entered into production this week after a very long wait with the show impacted greatly by the strikes. In a new interview with the YouTube channel Steve Varley, actor Eduardo Franco has said he’s not currently involved in the fifth season likely ruling out the return of Argyle.
As a quick refresher, Argyle was introduced in season 4 following the Byers’ move to California and serves as Jonathan’s best friend throughout the series. The character is best known for his long hair and his job as a pizza delivery boy for Surfer Boy Pizza. He was an excellent and comedic addition to last season and quickly became a fan favorite.
The actor was interviewed for his recent role on Self-Reliance, which has been streaming on Hulu since January 3rd.

After his breakout role as Nick Miller on Fox sitcom New Girl, Johnson has appeared alongside Tom Cruise in The Mummy, Chris Pratt in the Jurassic World franchise, and voicing Peter B. Parker in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Across the Spider-Verse. While Johnson has written several films, including Digging for Fire, Win It All, and Ride the Eagle, he makes his directorial debut with the new film Self Reliance.

The Sony animated films Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse have both received immense praise from audiences and critics. The last film ended on a cliffhanger and promised an epic conclusion to the trilogy, but Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, which was supposed to come out this March, was delayed a few months ago. Phil Lord and Chris Miller explained that they delayed the film in order to maintain the same high-quality bar they set with the other movies. Although Lord and Miller are hard at work on the third film, Jake Johnson, who voices Peter Parker, says he’s yet to start recording dialogue for the film, making it seem as though the delay will be longer than expected.

As we all still catch up on the best films of 2023 or the ones that, at least, needed time for broader distribution, January is already delivering a bevy of solid and worthwhile titles. It’s a busy time of year for film, from the awards discussion in the lead-up to the Oscars to the Sundance Film Festival, but Hollywood doesn’t slow down to accommodate. While some features will likely be forgotten by the month’s end, plenty more are worthy discoveries as we brace ourselves for the colder months.

As the aftereffects of the writers’ and actors’ strikes hit streaming in a big way, there’s not a lot of new content to offer subscribers early in 2024. Hulu still has some interesting things to offer in January, though.

In the new series, Cotesworth comes to the rescue when an unfortunate soul is killed on lavish Mediterranean ocean liner, and he has to team up with the prime suspect (Violett Beane) to solve the crime.

A third season of Starz’s period erotic comedy Minx isn’t likely in the cards, according to co-ep and star Jake Johnson.
In a recent Zoom chat with Deadline, the actor shared that he hasn’t heard anything about a final decision. “But by evidence of me cutting my hair short,” he said, “I don’t [expect a renewal].”
“I think the move to Starz, I think HBO kind of doing their HBO thing, or HBO Max, whatever it’s called now, I think that was brutal for [the show],” Johnson reflected. “Then, I think the strike coming out right as we were trying to promote it…My guess is you can’t beat something up that many times and keep going.”
Johnson called the hampering of the show’s success, simply as a result of the turbulent Hollywood moment in which it debuted, “unfortunate,” given his feeling that “there was a lot to that show.

Sony to open fantasy drama on Valentine’s Day 2024 in 250 theatres.
Sony Pictures Classics (SPC) has acquired all rights in North America excluding French Canada to Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s Amelie and will reissue the film on February 14, 2024 – 22 years after the original release through Miramax.
The move comes as theatres continue to court older audiences and anticipate a tricky year ahead in light of supply issues stemming from the six-month production halt during the Hollywood strikes.
Amelie stars Audrey Tatou in the title role as an altruistic waitress in Montmartre, Paris, who finally sets out to do something for herself. Mathieu Kassovitz also stars.

Jake Johnson’s survival comedy “Self Reliance” will play on the big screen for one day before it lands on Hulu.
Neon is releasing the film in 225 North American theaters on Jan. 3 in partnership with the cinema chain AMC Theatres. During the one-night stunt, audiences will be treated to 10 extra minutes of behind-the-scenes footage and a discussion with Johnson and his “New Girl” co-star Lamorne Morris.
“Self Reliance” will begin streaming on Hulu on Jan 12.
Johnson wrote and directed the movie in addition to starring as Tommy, a man who is offered $1 million to play a game in which he must outwit hunters as they attempt to kill him. He thinks he has found the perfect loophole because he can only be attacked when he’s alone. The only problem is that none of his friends or family want to keep him company because they don’t believe the game is real.

Tester recalled how memorable the set was when he first viewed it.
“The first time I saw the first set it was this incredible room because we’re Icelandic, the game show hosts were Icelandic, and this set was this incredible interior that was painted, this huge warehouse-like room,” he recalled.
He described the intricate details the set included and how it was “painted with like old Icelandic saga imagers like polar bears and indigenous people and it was all ancient and it was like, whoa.”
The attention to detail was important to the movie as a whole, as Tester explained, “It just set the tone so incredibly for some kind of movie, you didn’t know what it was going to be, but it set the...

“Beneath the Grass,” a drama about the criminal justice system and marijuana incarceration rates, will hit the market at the Cannes Film Festival next week.
Mía Maestro, Quincy Isaiah and Jeff Kober will lead the film, which begins production next month in New Jersey. Paradigm is representing worldwide sales for the film.
“Beneath the Grass” is set in 2008, capturing both the economic recession and the “Yes We Can” summer, and follows a single Latina mother whose illegal marijuana business is jeopardized when her young son befriends the new neighbors, a young white boy and his police officer grandfather.
According to production research, in 2008, Latino people were four times more likely to be arrested for marijuana possession than white people, while Black people were seven times more likely. Despite marijuana legalization in several states in the years since, the research explains, arrest rates have risen with racial disparities still prevalent.
