Porth Emmet - Small Company - Huge First Achievement
The plot of Porth Emmet is simple but very nicely constructed. Without giving the game the away I hope, the basic plot line is that a troublesome family come to Cornwall for a holiday. The locals, after being suitably annoyed, deal with them in their own rather singular fashion.
There are some excellent performances from the cast, in particular Andrew Wragge who brilliantly plays the abrasive father. A mix of indoor and on location scenes give this short film a nice rounded feel, and the in-car shots are nicely done. The use of Cornish (Kernowek) gives the film an earthy and authentic air: Cornish people will instantly recognise the situation created by the script and deft camera work.
The script and shooting have created a uncomfortably and cringingly believable story. No small achievement for their first film - and on a miniscule budget.
Highly recommended, not only as a very accessible bi-lingual Cornish-English, film but one that tackles a taboo subject: the social impact of tourism and friction sometimes caused.
