Pierce Brosnan, Mark Hamill and Ben Kingsley are set to bring Jesus Christ’s adversaries to life in an animated feature inspired by a posthumously published story from Charles Dickens.
The three performers will portray villains as part of the star-studded voice cast for director Seong-ho “Jay” Jang’s The King of Kings. Hailing from South Korea-based animation house Mofac Animation, the film is loosely based on The Life of Our Lord, the Dickens short story that was published decades after the author’s death and focuses on the life and times of Christ.
Brosnan voices Pontius Pilate, the biblical figure who ordered Jesus’ crucifixion. Hamill will tackle the role of King Herod, who is described in the Bible as ordering the Massacre of the Innocents shortly after Jesus’ birth. Kingsley is taking on the part of High Priest Caiaphas, who presided over the Sanhedrin trial of Jesus.

Mofac Animation has found Jesus.
Oscar Isaac has signed on to portray Jesus Christ in The King of Kings, the animated family film being made by the South Korean-based animation house. At the same time, Forest Whitaker has been tapped to give voice to the apostle Peter.
The duo join a growing A-list voice cast that includes Kenneth Branagh, Uma Thurman, and Jojo Rabbit actor Roman Griffin Davis.
Seong-ho “Jay” Jang, known as a visual effects pioneer in Korea, is directing King of Kings while Anfernee Kim (Last Knights, John Woo’s The Crossing 2) is producing.

Mofac Animation Inc., South Korea’s most decorated visual effects studio, proudly announces its first-ever full-length animated movie: The King of Kings, an animated family film inspired by a little-known short story by Charles Dickens depicting the life and times of Jesus Christ.

South Korean animation house Mofac Animation is working on a new feature inspired by both Charles Dickens and the life of Jesus Christ.
Director Seong-ho “Jay” Jang’s faith-based feature The King of Kings, inspired by a posthumously published Dickens story, is currently in the final stages of production and seeking distribution. The film’s team has quietly been recording dialogue with what they say is a high-profile voice cast that it plans to reveal at a later date.
The King of Kings follows Charles Dickens and youngest son Walter as they bond over the famed author’s short story “The Life of Our Lord,” which was a holiday tradition in the Dickens household, though it was never published until 1934, decades after the author’s death. Through animation, the pair and their cat Willa become immersed in the story of Jesus, involving notable friends and foes.

HBO Max is set to enter into its second month of existence. And you know what that means: it’s Christmas in July!
HBO Max’s list of new releases for July 2020 is highlighted by one prominent Christmas movie: last year’s Emilia Clarke-starring Last Christmas. But the real cause for Christmas in July is all the exciting animated DC content coming our way on the first of the month. July 1 sees the arrival of just about every animated Batman project ever created. July 1 also features the arrival of just about every Justice League animated series ever created as well.
If that weren’t enough, July 1 is also when every live-action Superman movie (save for Man of Steel) makes it streaming debut. July is starting to look like a month where HBO Max establishes its real potential and geek culture bonafides…despite an at-times difficult rollout.

When HBO Max launched last month, DC fans hoped it would be the premiere place to go to watch all their favorite DC content. While the streaming service did have an impressive array of films and TV shows available on launch, there were a lot of notable missing titles, too, due to pre-existing licenses getting in the way. As time goes on, though, more DC properties will end up on the site. Case in point: this July will see a whole heap of superhero content go up on HBO Max.

(L-r) Josh Mauga, Cliff Curtis, Dwayne Johnson, Roman Reigns and John Tui in the new Fast & Furious
Actor Cliff Curtis modestly acknowledges he is not a brand or a marquee name, despite a vast body of work which includes Once Were Warriors, Whale Rider, The Dark Horse, Blow, Three Kings, The Insider, Sunshine, Training Day, Collateral Damage and Crossing Over.
That could soon change as Curtis plays a key role in the latest iteration of Universal’s Fast & Furious franchise, followed by a recurring character in all four of James Cameron’s Avatar epics.
In Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw he plays the brother of Dwayne Johnson’s character, diplomatic security agent Luke Hobbs, who teams up with mercenary Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) to stop a new threat — “super-human” terrorist Brixton (Idris Elba). Action thriller Daydi has been pulled from cinemas after promotional posters featuring the actor turned out to be misleading
Uzbekistan’s film licensing body has stopped the release of a homegrown movie because it doesn’t feature Morgan Freeman. The actor was featured on posters to sell Daydi (Rogue), but makes no appearance in the final product.
The poster appeared to lift images of the actor from the promotional materials for the 2015 film Last Knights. The licensers accused production studio Timur Film of breaching consumers’ rights by falsely promising an appearance from the A-lister. Timur Film has yet to comment.

With Last Knights, Kazuaki Kiriya retells Japan's treasured story of loyalty, revenge and sacrifice, 47 Ronin. Moving the action away from his native country to a medieval European land, the masterless samurai of the true life story have become disavowed soldiers of an unfairly disgraced lord. Kiriya is right at home in the fantasy epic genre after helming 2004's Casshern and 2009's Goemon but this time the director has abandoned the digital backlots of his previous work to shoot on location in the Czech Republic. The film features Clive Owen and Morgan Freeman at the head of a cast of actors gathered from around the world. Before the film's opening in Japan, Kiriya attended the Foreign Correspondent Club to show his film and talk about its production....

The Gunman Eh, I really can't find any reason to ever watch this. it looks entirely generic and uninteresting.

An interesting consequence of all this is that the entertainment industry has begun looking beyond capes and cowls in their ‘what can we make a franchise out of?’ discussions. ‘What about other sorts of legendary characters?’ you can imagine them asking, before a big eureka moment… ‘What about Robin bloody Hood?!’

As well as the BBC series, there’s now another TV take on Robin Hood on the way (based on The Outlaw Chronicles books)…
We’ve reported before on the Robin Hood: Origins movie that is in the works with Lionsgate and Leonardo DiCaprio’s company. There’s also the BBC America TV series Nottingham (with its bizarre premise) in development.
Now, there’s another Robin Hood project on the way – a TV series from FremantleMedia (specifically their North American branch), based on The Outlaw Chronicles novels by British author Angus Donald.
FremantleMedia is a bit of a behemoth, with everything from The Bill to The X-Factor - and Wizards Vs. Aliens, on a geekier note – coming from their UK team. We’d expect this series to be a bigger budget affair, though, to be honest, if the American market is the target.

Set in an age of honour and justice by the sword, Last Knights tells the story of Raiden (Owen) – a fallen warrior who must rise up against a corrupt and sadistic ruler to avenge Bartok (Freeman), his dishonoured master. Think of the film as something akin to Seven Samurai but set in the middle ages and you’ll be somewhere close.
If I’m honest, I’m not the biggest fan of historical epics – give me a down and dirty, straight to DVD schlockfest over one any day. However when said historical epic the English language debut of famed Japanese director Kazuaki Kiriya (Casshern, Goemon), I can’t help but put my prejudices aside.

★★☆☆☆ Over a decade on from the success of Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings films, fantasy is still proving a crowd pleasing genre both in cinemas and on television. Game of Thrones continues to dominate the small screen, while Jackson's own Hobbit trilogy is a multi-billion dollar success despite being anathema to many fans of the original films. Hoping to continue in this vein is Last Knights (2015), perhaps more medieval than Middle Earth but clearly aiming for similarities in tone and theme. Clive Owen takes the lead, playing a knight who gathers his comrades for revenge when his master is killed by a corrupt nobleman (Aksel Hennie).

About Last Knight: Kiriya’s Culture Club Reimagining of the Feudal System
It’s unclear for who or for what reason Japanese director Kazuaki Kiriya decided to undertake his English language debut, Last Knights, a convoluted pseudo-revenge flick that plays like some very watered down version of the classic 47 Ronin mythos but reconstituted within a parallel universe’s sci-fi inspired Crusades tale. A gig is a gig, so we can’t blame the poo poo platter of multicultural actors portraying peoples we’re supposed to believe all resided in the same place (not to mention, fought for the same cause), each with varying degrees of accented and/or broken English. Incredibly flaccid and late staged action sequences following a baffling revenge plot don’t help matters, except maybe to say that even if the world had known an age of such incredible diversity we still wouldn’t be able to all just get along.

We've had First Knight, now prepare for Last Knights, an altogether more doom-laden, Game Of Thrones-like affair in which Clive Owen gets early-medieval in the name of vengeance and there’s minimal jousting. The film has a new trailer and poster to share below.brightcove.createExperiences();A mash-up of European epics and Japanese samurai adventure (overseen by a veteran of the latter), Last Knights introduces Owen as Raiden, member of a warrior caste in service to a worthy nobleman played by Morgan Freeman. All’s well in this unnamed if wintry land until Headhunters’ Aksel Hennie appears as the emperor’s emissary and skulls start getting seriously dugged.Hennie is the big bad here, boasting a snarly visage, terrible villain hair and a sinister henchmen in Tsuyoshi Ihara (Letters From Iwo Jima). Behind you can say “get busy living or get busy dying”, Morgan has got busy dying and Owen...

The glum revenge epic Last Knights is a timeworn tale that, when you squint, looks like the future. Established Hollywood stars Clive Owen and Morgan Freeman are there onscreen clutching swords and intoning dramatic pledges of fealty and death. But the money for the film came from South Korea — and in the movie business, money is always the A-plot.
In Asia, South Korean culture reigns supreme. Its pop albums and makeup styles are even cropping up — illegally — on the streets of Pyongyang. Last Knights is Seoul's first big step toward making movies for the rest of the world. It's shot in English, filmed in the Czech Republic, and every frame of it is a round-the-globe mash-up. When you have a film boasting the likes of Clive Owen and Morgan Freeman in the leads and it comes out straight to VOD and home video with a handful of theatrical dates thrown in to sweeten the pot ... well, something's gone badly wrong. So let's not have any illusions about the upcoming Last Knights being a particularly good film because the likelihood of that being the case is quite small. But, that said, the film is the English language debut of Casshern and Goemon director Kaz Kiriya, who very much knows his way around a pretty picture so there should at least be some quality visuals to enjoy.Academy Award® Nominee Clive Owen (Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role, Closer, 2004)...

Once every decade or so, a dashing white guy warrior fights his way through a "Last" movie. In 1992, it was"Last of the Mohicans." 11 years later, "The Last Samurai." 12 years after that, we come to "Last Knights," a new action-fantasy-adventure epic starring Clive Owen as a fallen warrior and Morgan Freeman as either the sadistic ruler he is fighting or the master he is avenging. The trailer isn't too clear on that point, but does include the phrase "the wounds of honor are self-inflicted," which is undeniably awesome. (Side note: if some intelligent person would like to leave a comment verifying whether or not the word "cancer" existed in the Dark Ages, I'd kind of like to know!) Morgan Freeman and Clive Owen star in Japanese photographer-turned-filmmaker Kazuaki Kiriya's "Last Knights," which centers on a band of warriors who seek to avenge the loss of their master at the hands of a corrupt emperor. Owen plays Raiden, a hero who rises up with his men on a mission of revenge for their dishonored master, played by Freeman, and take on a corrupt ruler in Aksel Hennie. It's a project that's actually been sitting around for a few years (it was initially announced, and shot in 2012). Clive Owen and Morgan Freeman are two of my favorite actors. While Freeman has garnered the critical acclaim and trophies to make any number of bad movies, Clive Owen has yet to maintain the A-list status deserving of his acting talents. Last Knights doesn't look like it will do much to turn that around for either of them. Directed by Kazuaki Kiriya (Casshern), Last Knights looks like a cross between King Arthur and the recent Nicolas Cage movie Outcast. Clive Owen plays Raiden, a...

Game of Thrones might be one of the most popular medieval-esque epics ever, as it counts the likes of Diana Rigg, Charles Dance, Natalie Dormer, and Peter Dinklage among its cast. But does it have Morgan Freeman? No? Well, Last Knights does, so you should watch it instead.
Last Knights features Morgan Freeman as…someone with a very deep and pleasant voice, who may or may not be the antagonist. It also has Clive Owen brandishing a sword and looking very dark and grimy. The plot consists of a tale of a warrior (Owen) who leads a band to avenge their dishonored master. It looks somewhat like a medieval English version of a samurai flick, which makes sense when we realize that the director is Kazuaki Kiriya, who did Goemon, based on a Japanese folk legend that sounds a lot like Robin Hood.

Filmed a full two years ago, Last Knights has been inhabiting a misty limbo-land waiting for release. It seems it's finally emerging, blinking into the sunlight of 2015, however, and to prove it here's a trailer to show us what we've been missing while we watched Game Of Thrones instead. Clive Owen and Morgan Freeman are the stars, both upstaged by Freeman's moustache.Shot in and around Prague but set in a medieval fantasy-land, Last Knights is the story of Owen's Raiden, a swordsman employed by Freeman's dishonoured Lord Bartok to lead a band of warriors against corrupt ruler Gezza Mott (Headhunters' Aksel Hennie).Kazuaki Kiriya is the director, making his first film on actual sets and locations, following the entirely green-screen antics of Casshern and Goemon. It's been 11 years since Clive Owen strapped on some armor as King Arthur in the 2004 medieval action drama of the same name, and now he's picking up the sword again in The Last Knights. The film was shot in 2012 by Japanese filmmaker Kazuaki Kiriya (The Legend of Goemon), but it's been sitting on a shelf waiting for release since then. And now that the first trailer has arrived, it's easy to see why no one has been clamoring to get this movie on the big screen. The epic follows Owen as a fallen warrior who rises against a corrupt and sadistic ruler (Aksel Hennie) to avenge his dishonored master (Morgan Freeman). Watch? Here's the first trailer for Kazuaki Kiriya's The Last Knights from USA Today: The Last Knights is directed by Kazuaki Kiriya (The Legend of Goemon) with a script from Michael Konyves (Barney’s Version). If it wasn't for Steven Soderbergh's "The Knick" what would Clive Owen have to cling toc For now he has Last Knights in which he plays Raiden, a fallen warrior who rises against a corrupt and sadistic ruler to avenge his dishonored master. Morgan Freeman co-stars and Kazuaki Kiriya directs a script by Michael Konyves (Barney's Version). Lionsgate will release the film, which began production in 2012, in theaters and On Demand on April 3. Man, I remember the days when it seemed a sure thing Clive Owen would become the next James Bond. Back in 2005, Owen was said to be in the running alongside Daniel Craig and "nip/tuck" star Julian McMahon. As we all know, the role went to Craig and now look what has happened to the two other contenders... though Owen does contend we was never offered the part.

Surely nothing could be wrong with the shot-over-two-years-ago "Last Nights," right? We can't fault the the casting —Morgan Freeman and Clive Owen are great when you give them something decent to work with. But that appears to be the problem with this medieval misfire, with the first trailer pointing towards a movie that perhaps everyone involved would hope stayed forgotten. Penned by Michael Konyves ("Barney's Version") and directed by Japanese filmmaker Kazuaki Kiriya ("The Legend of Goemon"), the story follows Raiden and his band of honorable dudes who seek to avenge their master and give the baddie played by Aksel Hennie a hard time. It looks like your stand clanging-swords-raid-the-castle type deal, and you probably find more satisfying drama and action on "Game Of Thrones." Morgan Freeman In 'Ted 2'
In Ted 2, Freeman will play a legendary civil rights lawyer who will step in to help Ted achieve justice through the legal system, according to Variety. Further plot details have yet to be revealed. ‘Camp X-Ray’ trailer 2014: Kristen Stewart and Payman Maadi in Guantanamo’s ‘war zone’ (photo: Kristen Stewart in ‘Camp X-Ray’) The official Camp X-Ray trailer is out. "Make no mistake about it. This is a war zone," a male voice tells the recruits (and us) at the start of the movie trailer, set in Guantanamo’s temporary detention center Camp X-Ray. A "war zone" in more ways than one; he’s referring not only to the physical danger faced by the U.S. military guards (and their Muslim prisoners — or rather, "detainees"), but also, and more ominously, to a war of minds and mindsets between the two groups, who may have more in common with each other than is apparent on the surface. Private Amy Cole aka Kristen Stewart is forewarned: "You can talk to ‘em, but do not let these guys learn anything about you. Do not let them get inside your head.

Our International Sales Agent (Isa) of the Day coverage has resumed for this year's Cannes Film Festival. We will feature successful, upcoming, innovative and trailblazing agents from around the world (during and after the festival) and cover the latest trends in sales and distribution. Beyond the numbers and deals, this segment will also share inspirational and unique stories of how these individuals have evolved and paved their way in the industry, and what they envision for the new waves in global cinema.
Clay Epstein is the Senior Vice President of Sales and Acquisitions for Arclight Films, a leading international film sales company with a strong global reach, including the Easternlight and Darclight brands that rule in the Asian and genre markets. Arclight has a long list of titles that spans across the genres, including epic period action The Last Knights with Clive Owen and Morgan Freeman, family film Paper Planes starring Sam Worthington, thriller Reclaim starring John Cusack, Outcast starring Hyden Christiansen and Nicholas Cage, and the animated adventure Legend of A Rabbit: Martial of Fire 3D.
Clay embarked on his film career in Los Angeles back in the days when Pulp Fiction and El Mariachi were changing the playing field for independent cinema. His broad experience in the film world equips him with a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of the filmmaking process - a great advantage and benefit for any of his clients.
Clay shares more about Arclight Films, his experience from the days of the indie film explosion in Los Angeles, and why America's television renaissance is keeping the film business on its toes.
Please share an overview of Arclight Films.
I joined Arclight Films just over two years ago as Vice President of Sales and Acquisitions. Arclight was started 12 years ago by Gary Hamilton, and is an Australian based company with its headquarters in Los Angeles and offices in Sydney, London, Beijing, and Toronto.
We have three divisions of the company, which is more of a branding exercise. Arclight Films is the gold standard, with titles like The Bank Job, Lord of War, and Predestination under its banner.
Darclight is for the edgy genre driven cinema, has nothing to do with budget level, but more with genre. Bait 3D, a 25 million dollar film under Darclight, was number one in the Chinese box office last year. It also carries some of the best award-winning modest budgeted horror films coming from the world of cinema right now. Wolf Creek 1 and 2 also fall under Darclight, as does Grave Encounters 1 & 2.
Our Easternlight division focuses on Asian cinema. We're representing the biggest films coming out of Asia with names like Jet Li, Chow Yun Fat and Donnie Yen. We also sell non-Asian cinema into Asia, and have an aggressive share in this market because of the level of cinema that we're selling. Recent success includes Special ID starring Donnie Yen and Badges of Fury starring Jet Li.
What distinguishes Arclight in the global market?
Let's take China for example. They're looking at commercial films in the west more than noncommercial films in China: cast driven, big budget commercial content, special effects, branded content, 3D big movies, as well as the cast-driven Chinese films. A Jet Li or Donnie Yen film, which might be a limited release in some western territories, will be a number one film throughout Asia, and will earn millions in the box office. We’re excelling in this market, because we truly understand its stars, the content, the filmmakers and especially the cultural idiosyncrasies - this sets us apart from the rest.
We’re also closely tied to the production aspects of half of our slate. This means a combination of development, packaging, and co-production possibilities. There's some incredible cinema coming out of Australia right now. It's a renaissance, and we have many Australian co-productions with support from the Australian film industry. We're developing films that can be made in Australia's film infrastructure with budgets anywhere from 3-4 million up to 20-30 million. Our recent success includes Predestination starring Ethan Hawke, A Few Best Men, and the upcoming sequel A Few Less Men.
We're commercially driven; we know what our distributors want and what the audience is drawn to. We want to be able to make films that they're interested in and that there's a market for. We'll always have some art house films on the lineup because we're all cinephiles, and we need to support those filmmakers too.
How are sales going?
If I take a step back from my sales agent role for a moment, the truth is that the market has become nothing more than selective. Look at other industries. They're selective as well: the tech industry, the automotive industry, and the housing industry. If something doesn't work, if the TV breaks down, if the car does not meet consumer demand, they're not going to sell. If they're not the right shape, and the color's not good, that TV just won't sell. That's what's happening in the film industry. If the films are not what the consumer necessarily wants to see, if the film was not produced well, if the story is off, it's the wrong genre for the market, it just won't do well.
The reason why everyone is saying the market is tough is because yesteryear, you could sell a sub-par film and make money on it. There was an appetite for pure content regardless of quality. Today the challenge is to make a film within a manageable budget that will appeal to a global audience. Unless you have a major hit on your hands, the obstacle we all face is that the cost to produce a film continues to rise while the cost that distributors will pay is creeping downwards.
The market has become selective. The consumers have other choices. They're not going to sit in front of the TV and watch movies all day. There are so many other things that they can do, so we're competing for their free time. We're competing against apps and videogames. We have TV with many amazing series--it's the glory days of TV again. People will sit and watch whole seasons of shows like Breaking Bad, so we're competing for this time as well. What we offer them better be good enough to compete with all the other media that's out there - that's why we all say that it's getting tough.
What do you consider when reviewing potential films?
We all have responsibility to the company, to the audience, to our distributors and our clients. When we evaluate a project, we're thinking whether or not there's an audience. One of the first classes I had in film school said the film is not a film until there's an audience to see it. That stuck with me. I still think about that when I'm evaluating a film. My job is to get an audience for that film. What steps I'll take to get there can be placing it with the right distributor, finding the right festival to launch it at, or finding the right publicist. You have to take different steps depending on the film or the strategy, but my ultimate goal is to find the audience and to identify its potential size.
Please talk about Arclight's current projects.
We have some projects in postproduction including Outcast with Nicholas Cage and Hayden Christensen, Reclaim with John Cusack and Ryan Philippe, and The Last Knights with Clive Owen and Morgan Freeman. They have promos and trailers; we've been successful at securing distribution. It's thrilling to have seen those from go from script stage and then all the way to completion. Nothing beats when you see distributors lining up their release schedules.
We have some films in development that we've just announced: Heart of Darkness and The Nest. I'm looking forward to the next six to twelve months as these films come together.
There are projects that we became involved in during production, and we're lucky enough to be a part of, like Tell, with Jason Lee and Milo Ventimiglia. The distributors' response has been extremely positive.
What is your background?
I wanted to be in the movie business since day one. I never wanted to do anything else. There was a short period when I wanted to be a psychologist, but that was an excuse to avoid failure in what was then a less common field to major in.
I wanted to be an actor, writer and filmmaker. I went to film school when Pulp Fiction came out and Robert Rodriguez was making a name for himself. It was the birth of indie cinema (it was a brand in the early 90's), and I was right in that world as a film student. I remember meeting Robert Rodriguez at a book signing for “Rebel without a Crew” and he was incredibly inspiring. The possibilities seemed endless. Everyone thought that they were going to be the next Tarentino. There was a buzz! People were shooting all over La, such as Paul Thomas Anderson and Ben Stiller. There was a sense that film was breaking away from the studio system, and everyone could go and make an indie film. Inexpensive broadcast quality video was just about to break, but we were still dependent on film.
I learned on 16mm and was always in the labs at school. I spent more money on film processing at the labs than on tuition. I was cutting negatives at the school all night long. There was certainly encouragement to do things in a new and different way, but it's not really embraced when you try to do that in film school. There was a bit of a contradiction there, and my inflated plan to become the next Woody Allen was being stomped on.
I did a few short films and a feature. They were all horrible, but I learned the filmmaking process - that's what's important. I wrote a script. I raised money, and I made it. I learned that process, and I respect it so much; this helps me when I'm evaluating projects and meeting filmmakers. I understand what it takes to make a movie. It's hard to make a good film, and it’s hard to make a bad film. It's a tireless endeavor, and probably one of the most difficult things that a person could do. A filmmaker is so reliant on so many people, so much money and so much time. I am incredibly sympathetic to the endeavor.
Where does your drive come from?
I get passionate for everything I'm working on. I have to, because it influences everyone we work with. Our success relies on this... we're living in a parallel universe with the studios that have the resources to create awareness for its products. They have the marketing and publicity. Sometimes we don't have those means for our films, so we have to find creative ways to get them out there. This is where my drive comes from.

Local film executives talked of the need for joint Korean-Chinese funds and institutions to support co-productions at the first session of Busan’s Asian Film Market today.
Execs at the Kofc Industry Forum (Oct 7-9) also said that the co-production treaty between China and South Korea, which has been in discussion since August 2011, might be signed as early as this month.
Films made under the treaty will be regarded as local productions in each country, enabling them to secure funding from Korea’s subsidy systems, as well as bypass import quotas in China. A tentative accord was signed in June this year.
“Our countries are geographically close and we share a similar culture but we have different film investment strategies,” said Yang Buting, chairman of China’s National Film Capital Management. “Korean stars such as Jang Dong-gun are very famous in China – and Korean culture and lifestyle is very appealing to the Chinese.”
