It seems to be a very popular time for Korean actors stepping behind the camera, with Ha Jung Woo and Yoo Ji Tae having helmed “Fasten Your Seatbelts” and “Mai Ratima” respectively. Next up is acclaimed veteran star Park Joong Hoon, known for roles in the likes of “Nowhere to Hide”, “Haeundae” and many other hits, who makes his debut with “Top Star”. The film sees Park sticking to what he knows, with a cautionary look behind the scenes of the entertainment industry, following an ambitious young man who tries to work his way up the celebrity ladder. Uhm Tae Woong (“Architecture 101”) headlines, with Kim Min Joon, (“The Concubine”) as his mentor and rival, and support from actress So Yi Hyun (“Heartstrings”) and a number of cameo appearances from Korean stars, including Uhm Jung Hwa and Ahn Sung Ki. Uhm Tae Woong plays Tae Sik, a lowly talent manager and chauffeur,...

Popular and critically lauded Korean actor Ha Jung Woo, noted for recent roles in the likes of “The Terror Live”, “Berlin File” and “The Yellow Sea”, makes his screenwriting and directorial debut with “Fasten Your Seatbelt”. Whereas fellow thespian Yoo Ji Tae recently went for heavy social conscience drama with his first time behind the cameras with “Mai Ratima”, Ha takes another route entirely, his film being a comedy revolving around an ensemble cast of wacky characters and set almost entirely on a possibly doomed aircraft. The cast is headed by Jung Kyung Ho (“Running Turtle”) as a Korean Wave Hallyu actor Ma Jun Gyu, famed for his role in the sweary blockbuster “Mr Profanity”. Plagued by scandals in his personal life, Ma is taking a flight back to Seoul, which he finds himself sharing with an eclectic bunch of fellow passengers, including a flight attendant who happens to be a former squeeze,...

“Mai Ratima” marks the feature length debut directorial of acclaimed Korean actor Yoo Ji Tae, known for his turns in the likes of “Oldboy”, “Midnight FM” and more. Having dabbled in short productions earlier in his career, the film sees him taking on a serious subject for his first proper outing behind the camera, charting the many difficulties faced by immigrants and the poor in modern Korea. It’s an interesting choice for the actor, as rather than a commercially friendly proposition, the film is a tough, gritty affair that pulls few punches in its depiction of life on the streets, which premiered at the 2012 Busan Film Festival and played at the London Korean Film Festival in 2013. The title refers to Mai Ratima, a 22 year old Thai woman (first time actress Park Ji Soo), living in Korea as a mail order bride bought for a mentally challenged husband (Lee Joon...
