Sony’s “Kraven the Hunter” is being pushed back from its August release, moving to Dec. 13, 2024. It will screen in IMAX and premium large formats.

With a coveted Christmastime release date open, Sony is positioning “Kraven” as an R-rated option for the end of the year.

The film is directed by J.C. Chandor, with a story by Richard Wenk and screenplay by Wenk, Art Marcum and Matt Holloway. It’s produced by Avi Arad, Matt Tolmach and David Householter.

Sony has pushed their reboot of Karate Kid from Dec. 13 this year to May 30, 2025. This has created a bit of a backward domino effect but won’t rob the year of theatrical releases.
Backfilling Karate Kid‘s spot is Sony/Marvel’s Kraven the Hunter which goes from Aug. 30, the Labor Day weekend frame, to Dec. 13. The Aaron Taylor Johnson movie will have Imax and Plf screens. Kraven the Hunter will be the only R-rated movie during the holidays.
Added to the release calendar is the Blumhouse title They Listen, which will now go over the 4-day Labor Day weekend this year.
Debuting next summer is Legendary/Sony’s animated pic Animal Friends on Aug. 15, 2025 with the voices of Jason Momoa, Ryan Reynolds, Aubrey Plaza and Dan Levy among others.

Ashley Brucks has been tapped to lead Screen Gems, the Sony Pictures division behind the “Resident Evil” and “Insidious” franchises. A deal hasn’t been finalized and several other candidates were up for the post, but insiders say the job is Brucks’ and to expect a formal announcement to come soon.
She joins the company from Paramount, where she worked as head of development for Paramount Players, a production label focused on making comedies and genre fare. At Screen Gems, Brucks replaces Steve Bersch, who will leave the label when his contract ends in December. The decision was made by the executive, who had been with Sony for more than 15 years, serving in various capacities.

Sony Pictures’ upcoming 2023 and 2024 theatrical slate just received a massive shakeup, Deadline reports today, due to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA and WGA strike. Kraven the Hunter, the Ghostbusters: Afterlife Sequel, Venom 3, and They Listen are among the impacted films.
With guild actors unable to promote their films, expect quite a few delays from Sony’s upcoming theatrical slate, with dates subject to change even further.
Up first to receive delays is the R-rated Kraven the Hunter, starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Avengers: Age of Ultron). The official red band trailer debuted last month introduced Kraven’s origin story, while teasing several sequences of bloody mayhem. We’ll have to wait a bit longer to see just how bloody Kraven’s origin story gets, as Sony bumped the release fate from October 6, 2023 all the way to August 30, 2024, where it’ll open Labor Day weekend.

Sony Pictures has significantly upended its theatrical release slate for the remainder of 2023 and into 2024, including pulling the third “Spider-Verse” movie “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse” until an unspecified date. The changes come as Hollywood is in the midst of dual strikes, including the actors strike that prevents stars from promoting studio releases.
Other sequels and tentpoles have also been dramatically shifted, including a second “Ghostbusters” movie with Paul Rudd, this summer’s “Gran Turismo,” “Kraven the Hunter,” and a new “Karate Kid” movie, to name a few. The studio did however assign summer 2024 dates for the fourth “Bad Boys” film and the third “Venom” movie.
An individual with knowledge tells IndieWire Sony is considering several dates for the release of “Beyond the Spider-Verse” depending on how long the strike lasts.
Also removed from the theatrical release slate for now is “They Listen” starring John Cho and produced by Jason Blum.

Call it the Sony shuffle. In an unfortunate throwback to the early days of the pandemic in 2020, when prolonged shutdowns forced studios to push back several high-profile projects to safer pastures, the AMPTP's refusal to negotiate in good faith with both the currently-striking writers guild (WGA) and the actors guild (SAG-AFTRA) has once again resulted in a fresh wave of delays. Only a little more than a month after Disney upended much of their 2023 slate of releases, Sony is now following suit.
First and foremost, the biggest news of the bunch revolves around the upcoming threequel that will cap the acclaimed "Spider-Verse" trilogy -- and it's also the least surprising. Previously dated for a theatrical release on March 29, 2024, "Beyond the Spider-Verse" never seemed likely to hit that mark, particularly after reports of widespread workplace mismanagement on "Across the Spider-Verse." This new development certainly confirms those fears, as the highly-anticipated sequel...

Sony Pictures has made some significant release date shifts for its upcoming films, including “Kraven the Hunter” and “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.”
The delays come as dual union strikes disrupt the day-to-day business of Hollywood, and the SAG-AFTRA conflict makes it particularly difficult to open major fall movies without the participation of star talent. Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s anticipated Marvel outing “Kraven” is shifting to August 30, 2024, from a planned October 6 outing this year. The push to next Labor Day is vital, studio insiders said, as leading man Taylor-Johnson would need to engage in a worldwide press tour to open the visceral action project in just over two months.

Major Sony release date changes here, a bulk of them due to the actors strike.
Let’s start with the good news: The Culver City lot is dating Bad Boys 4, which recently wrapped production for Fathers’ Day weekend, June 14, 2024. It’s going up against Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out 2. Through three movies, the Will Smith and Martin Lawrence cop series counts over $841M worldwide.
Sony is also dating Venom 3 for July 12, 2024. Sony always had that date on reserve, and it’s up against a New Line horror movie. Through two movies, the Venom movies have grossed $1.36 billion.
Now for the bad news which is impacting the Q3 and Q4 schedules due to the SAG-AFTRA strike:
—Gran Turismo, originally dated for Aug. 11, is now going to sneak preview over that weekend and Aug. 18, officially opening on Aug. 25 wide. Said a Sony spokesperson on the unique last minute, promo shift,...

Sony had been planning to give director Chris Weitz’s horror film They Listen a theatrical release on August 25th of this year, which is why we have it listed on our Summer Horror Movie Preview… but we’re going to have to remove it from that list, because Sony has (according to Yahoo) decided to delay the release an entire year. They Listen is now set to reach theatres on August 30, 2024.
They Listen is coming to us from Sony, Blumhouse, and Depth of Field. Weitz is producing the film with Jason Blum and Andrew Miano. Bea Sequeira, Dan Balgoyen, Britta Rowings, and Paul Davis serve as executive producers. Filming was already underway in Los Angeles back in December, so this movie is going to be complete and sitting on a shelf a while before its new release date rolls around next year.
All details about They Listen are being kept under wraps.

Craving answers about “Kraven the Hunter”? Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s got one very important bit of information for you: “Fuck yes, it’s gonna be rated R,” he said (from afar) during Sony’s presentation Monday night at CinemaCon 2023.
That prerecorded video set the tone for the very, very bloody first footage, which Sony rolled to the riled-up attendees — movie theater owners, mostly — at the Caesar’s Palace Colosseum in Las Vegas. What we got wasn’t technically a trailer, we were told: Sony executive Sanford Panitch said the full “Kraven” trailer will be released in theaters this summer.
The teaser (let’s call it) ended with the reveal of the film’s baddie, the classic Spider-Man villain The Rhino; the audience seemed to dig that.

The Moffitt family claims they were haunted by a presence known as Mr. Entity several decades ago, and their story went viral when an article about that haunting was published last year. Now that story is set to be told in further detail in the book Mr. Entity: The Moffitt Family Haunting, written by Jessica Moffitt – and Blumhouse has already acquired the rights to turn the story into an unscripted TV series.
The Moffitts were terrorized by the supernatural spirit Mr. Entity from the late 1980s to early 1990s, keeping the affairs under wraps to all those except paranormal experts. Jessica’s book includes first-hand perspective from herself, Deborah Moffitt, and the rest of the family. The manuscript reveals even more details about the haunting and the family’s background that may uncover connections to their experience.
Blumhouse is developing the unscripted series with ITV America’s Good Caper Content.
