One morning, a man is found stabbed with a pitchfork in the stable of Toronto's Imperial Hotel. It turns out that he was Tobias Pincher, a man with money troubles, who had a reputation for cheating at dice.
With Murdoch on the scene, Pincher's fiancée, Felicity Dawes, admits to knowing about the murder, but says several other things that suggest her witness may be unreliable, before the interview is cut short by her carer, Melanie Shropshire. With her mental state an issue, Murdoch enlists the help of Dr Ogden, who hears Felicity confessing to the murder, though Dr Ogden is sure that her connection with reality is suspect.
Murdoch discovers that Pincher had come to blows with a foreign hotel guest, Carl Rodriguez, for whom things look grim when Murdoch matches shoe prints he found in the stable to him, but he adamantly denies killing Pincher. However, when he discovers that Felicity has confessed to the murder, Rodriguez also confesses.
Matters take an unexpected turn when a portrait of a local artist who died decades earlier turns up bearing a striking resemblance to Rodriguez. The surprises continue when Constable Crabtree discovers a newspaper report of a murder in a stable with a pitchfork, accompanied by a sketch of the perpetrator, who looks just like Felicity.
Is history repeating itself? Despite His experience last New Year's Eve, is time travel possible after all? And with more than one confession, how will Murdoch find the real killer?
This is an inventive storyline, intertwined with some twists and turns in the ongoing relationship between Dr Ogden and Detective Murdoch. A fine episode.
