Fun trivia: one of the working titles for Wes Craven's 1996 slasher satire "Scream" was "Scary Movie." Filmmaker Keenan Ivory Wayans got wind of this trivia, and decided in 2000 to make a film called "Scary Movie" intended to satirize the popularity of "Scream." The late 1990s were a curious time in popular culture, as there weren't too many dominant horror trends. Popular music was beginning to comment on its own self-awareness (see: "Flagpole Sitta") and irony became ironic. Self-reflection went from a healthy Socratic exercise into a loop of eternal recurrence. By 2000, we became so busy commenting on our own commentaries, that it was hard to see where we started. This is where "Scary Movie" dropped in.
Make no mistake, "Scary Movie" is unfunny, as are its many sequels. They're cheap, homophobic, and vulgar. Wayans took his model from spoof filmmakers like Zucker/Abrahams/Zucker, but aimed to make something...

Lionsgate is having one hell of a 2023. They recently celebrated the theatrical opening of "John Wick 4," which already set a new franchise record at the box office. The studio still has highly anticipated releases like "Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret," "Saw X," and "The Expendables 4," but if you ask me, the biggest title on their slate is "The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes." The film is based once again on Suzanne Collins' popular series of novels and brought back Francis Lawrence, who helmed the latter three films in "The Hunger Games" film series, to direct. "The Hunger Games" films remain the highest-grossing property distributed by Lionsgate, so it's unsurprising they're adapting the prequel story.
But when planning out "The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes," I doubt anyone at Lionsgate could have predicted a massive resurgence in "The Hunger Games" popularity as Gen-z viewers discovered the series.

As the Epic Movie team announce they have Star Wars in their sights, might we have a chat about Mel Brooks' Spaceballs, amongst others?
Readers of this site may have read last week's news that there's to be a new Star Wars spoof. This film comes from the team who brought us Date Movie, Epic Movie, and apparently something called The Starving Games which blissfully passed me by. Jason Friedberg and Aaron Selzer make relatively cheap movies that, despite critical maulings, tend to make money at the box office. When I worked at a cinema, an eleven year old boy went to see Meet The Spartans three times, proclaiming it the best film he had ever seen.

With the massive success of last year’s The Force Awakens and now more recently Rogue One, it was probably only a matter of time before someone decided to cash in with a Star Wars parody film, and it turns out that someone will be Jason Friedberg along with his writing/directing partner Aaron Seltzer.
Their names may not be too familiar to most, but these are the guys behind the rash of spoof films that dominated the noughties, which began with the first Scary Movie and mercifully concluded (or so we thought) with 2013’s The Starving Games. Now, the duo are back in business, and have turned their attention to the galaxy far, far away with Star Worlds Episode Xxxive=MC2: The Force Awakens The Last Jedi Who Went Rogue.

Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer have made their careers from parodies, coming into their own on Date Movie and Epic Movie, flogging the horse all the way to The Starving Games and the upcoming, or at least proposed, Who the F#@K Took My Daughter?.
This is much the way Zucker-Abrahams-Zucker started out… actually, it’s closer to the way the ended up, with Friedberg and Seltzer’s films being less Airplane! or Naked Gun than Mafia! or An American Carol.
The latest of these spoofs is Superfast, which casts lookalikes for Vin Diesel and Paul Walker in a gag-driven reprise of some of the Fast and Furious series most egregious cliches. Here’s the trailer that I found hanging out, pretty much undisturbed, on Vimeo.

Hi everyone! This is a feature we’ve been running in every issue of Deadly Horror & Sci-Fi Magazine and I thought this would also be a great resource for our readers here at Daily Dead as it can be often very difficult to keep up with everything arriving on VOD platforms each and every month.
Be sure to check back on the first week of each month to get all the details on what genre films you can look forward to on VOD!

Jerry (Ryan Reynolds) is an affable singleton who works on the factory floor at a bathtub factory, ever eager to get along with his co-workers, especially Fiona, (Gemma Arterton) and Lisa (Anna Kendrick) from accounts. After work Jerry goes home to his pet cat, Mr. Whiskers, and loyal dog Bosco, where the three of them hang out, watch TV and discuss the day’s events.

Filmmakers Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer, the duo behind critically reviled spoofs like "Date Movie," "Epic Movie," "The Starving Games," "Meet The Spartans" and "Vampires Suck," have setup their next project.
The pair will co-write and direct "Who The F#@k Took My Daughter," this spoof aiming mostly at the Liam Neeson-led "Taken" film series.
In the spoof, Ryan Miller is a tough, no nonsense, black leather jacket-wearing type whose daughter is kidnapped. He sets out to hunt down the abductors and rescue her. Peter Safran will produce.
The pair's previous films have grossed a total of $350 million in worldwide box office thus far, though their two most recent films - "The Starving Games" and "Best Night Ever" - were bombs which only made a few million each.

I want to be a filmmaker. After going to school and writing, editing and learning how lights and a camera work, I have made the choice to follow that passion for the rest of my life. Perhaps that's why seeing these parody films today is so enraging. Knowing that there are people out there getting to live their dream by making shit like A Haunted House and The Starving Games truly pains me. One of my friends proposed the theory that maybe they're intentionally making bad films to see how long...

The best movie culture writing from around the internet-o-sphere. Just leave a tab open for us, will ya? “A Critical Confusion” –Brad Stevens’ sharp take down of Will Self’s mirror-holding view on the extinction of criticism. Inside, inside baseball. “The Best Man Holiday and the Language of Expectations” — Linda Holmes laments the industry’s continual underestimation of films starring black ensembles and/or made by black filmmakers. It’s time to stop being surprised when they do well. “Here’s How Indie Movie Rental Stores Are Surviving the New Frontier” — Sean Axmaker at Indiewire adds Scarecrow Video to the list of profiles in courage against the backdrop of Blockbuster busting. “The Starving Games is the Worst Hunger Games Spoof Ever: A Liveblog” — Mike Ryan watches the new Friedberg and Seltzer so you don’t have to. Here's a red-band trailer for the latest parody movie Best Night Ever. It comes from Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer who also brought us the parody films Date Movie and The Starving Games. I haven't seen either of those films, as I'm not a big fan of these crappy films.
Best Night Ever parodies films such as Bridesmaids, The Hangover, and Spring Breakers. It seems like yet another ridiculously pointless parody that I won't see. Here's the synopsis,
Claire is about to get married and she goes to Las Vegas with her sister and two friends for her bachelorette party. Things quickly spiral out of control in this unforgettable, shocking, and uproariously funny new film from the producer of the Paranormal Activity franchise and the co-creators of Scary Movie.
The movie comes out on VOD December 26th and hits theaters January 31st.

Warning: The following is a red band trailer that contains nudity and other adult content. It is Nsfw. Bachelor parties have long been a source of inspiration for comedy but with The Hangover, hard R pre-wedding cavorting became big business. Bridemaids and Bacherlorette gave this concept a female touch, while Last Vegas brought artificial hips and erectile dysfunction drugs and into the mix. But now, the guys who brought you ridiculous spoofs like Meet the Spartans, Vampires Suck and The Starving Games have taken their turn at bonkers bachelorette parties with Best Night Ever. Coming from horror masters Magnet and Blumhouse Productions, I suspected this trailer would be for a girls night gone wrong in the way of serial killers or enraging a ghost bride or something. But nope! This feature written and directed by spoofmakers Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer is a flat-out comedy, where there is plenty of...

Your Top Three is a series here at Movies.com where we choose a topic and you give us your top three picks. Apparently The Starving Games opened last Friday, but this latest spoof movie from Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer (Epic Movie; Vampires Suck) was released in such a limited amount of theaters that the distributor doesn't even seem interested in reporting box office figures. Reviews of the movie, all of them negative, also didn't start showing up until days later. But it's also available from iTunes and On Demand if you're into those guys' humor. I'm not judging. I haven't seen any of their work, except for Scary Movie, which they cowrote. Their brand of parody isn't everyone's cup of tea, of course. So what is? The difficulty...

The Spoof, or Parody, movie has long been a mainstay of the comedy genre. Though it offers writers and directors the chance to transcend the formula they are imitating there is a very fine line between success and failure. An understanding of the form is as important as a healthy disregard for it, and many of the examples below do push the genres they spoof to ridiculous extremes. As we usher in the release of The Starving Games on DVD and VOD this week we wanted to look back at past efforts of this enduring genre.
There’s a case to be made that some of the films gathered under the umbrella of the Parody Movie are so successful they become notable examples of the genre they spoofing. Edgar Wright’s films in particular are loving tributes to a their particular genre but in each case they become far more than a mockery.

Cody tells HollywoodLife.com about spoofing Josh Hutcherson and reuniting with Brant Daugherty in ‘The Starving Games.’ Plus, what was Mike really up to during his absence from ‘Pretty Little Liars’?
You know him best as Aria’s brooding brother Mike on Pretty Little Liars, but Cody Christian is done playing A’s twisted games (for now) as he switches gears to another game with a very different set of rules. The Starving Games, a hilarious spoof on The Hunger Games, is officially being released on demand and in select theaters Nov. 8 — and Cody tells HollywoodLife.com to prepare for a side of him you’ve never seen before.

>> Were you a fan of The Hunger Games before you did this movie?
[Laughs] Eh, not really. I mean, it’s a good movie. I watched it with my girlfriend, and she really liked it.

It’s the gesture that matters this late in the game, not the art: “The Starving Games” is the sixth directorial effort from Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer, and they are nothing if not consistent. Their interests in parody have always ranged from whatever’s generally zeitgeist-y at the time, though they’ve begun specifying their targets with “Vampires Suck” and their latest, both of which deflate the trends of recent young adult novel adaptations. It was pointless when the duo was satirizing everything under the sun, but at least in “The Twilight Saga” and “The Hunger Games,” they’ve selected targets that aren’t postmodern or self-critical in any imaginable way. When Stanley Tucci and Toby Jones get in those ridiculous “Hunger Games” wigs, is it any more respectable than working actors making some chump change in a major 2013 release that bothers to parody the Na’vi in “Avatar...

Maiara Walsh and Cody Allen Christian star in the first Master of Camouflage clip, followed by Brad Daugherty in The Katmiss Fandom clip from The Starving Games. The film from frequent spoofers Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer (Meet the Spartans) also includes Brant Daugherty, Ross Wyngaarden, Dean West and Diedrich Bader. Catch it in theaters, VOD and Digital Download on November 8th, 2013. Set in the most depressing corner of a post-apocalyptic future, our hero Kantmiss Evershot (Maiara Walsh) volunteers to take her manipulative younger sister’s place in the 75th annual “Starving Games.” In doing so, she must leave behind her smoldering just-a-friend Dale (Daugherty) and team up with the geeky baker’s son Peter Malarkey (Christian) in a fight for her life. But wait, there’s more! She could also win an old ham, a coupon for a footlong sub at a six-inch price, and a partially-eaten pickle!

It seems best to convey reactions to the latest trailer for Aaron Seltzer and Jason Friedberg’s newest Hollywood send-up, The Starving Games, by way of emoticon, simply because Friedberg and Seltzer seem like the emoticon equivalent of filmmakers (silly, useless, faddy, and devoid of actual emotion). That said, the best emoticon to describe this trailer is :/. Frankly, we’re disappointed in its flaccid attempts to integrate punchy pop culture references into its Hunger Games rip-off narrative. This trailer doesn’t even branch out beyond its “source material” until 36 seconds into its 2:27 runtime (and that’s not even for a spoofy moment, just a weird character break from their fake Katniss Everdeen). What the hell, parody dudes? Given our recent ripping of Seltzer and Friedberg’s career, it seems strange that we’d bemoan the lack of cheap shots in this latest trailer, but if those two can’t cobble together a film entirely made...

For some reason we can't quite fathom why someone in Hollywood keeps giving Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer money to make spoof movies. That trend continues with today's reveal of the new trailer for The Starving Games. If you couldn't tell, this latest comedic (and we use that term loosely) outing uses The Hunger Games as its inspiration. Kantmiss Evershot joins the games -- and in theory, hilarity would ensue. In typical Seltzer and Friedberg fashion, this new trailer takes an everything-but-the-kitchen-sink approach to its jokes. Apparently, the idea is that if you just keep flinging lame gags at the audience, at least a few of them have to hit. In this new clip, we get jokes about "Tebowing" (about six months too late, guys), a...

Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer. Don't know them? Count yourself lucky. They're the ones who gave us Meet The Spartans. And Epic Movie. And Vampires Suck. They're two comedy directors/writers without a comedic bone in their bodies. Now, we have the next addition to this wonderful series of brilliant satires: The Starving Games. Yeah, that's not even a remotely funny title, but it's miles better than what we get in the actual trailer.

This was inevitable, no? Spoof-meisters Aaron Seltzer and Jason Friedberg have carved out their niche making fun of blockbusters (and broad blockbuster genres) in movies like Epic Movie, Disaster Movie and the Scary Movie series. The Starving Games targets, obviously, The Hunger Games right as Catching Fire ramps up its publicity campaign. The new trailer just arrived on YouTube, and it.s . well, as dated and immature as you might have expected. Hugh Janus? Really? That joke might have been funny 15 years ago, when Bart Simpson used it to prank Moe the bartender on The Simpsons. Then there was that time a weatherman fell for that prank on live television! Ok, I take it back. There probably is a huge audience out there for these types of jokes. The trailer actually give away what I assume is the entire movie. Then again, it.s basically just the original Hunger Games...

This looks hilarious! Even funnier than The Hunger Games! You knew this was coming: a raucous spoof and they’re calling it…..(get this)……The Starving Games! The title alone cracks me up! Kantmiss Evershot?!.… President Snowballs?!…..Who thinks up this stuff?!? It was Written and Directed by Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer (the geniuses behind Vampires Suck!) so you know it’s gonna be funny! The Starving Games opens in Select Cities, VOD and Digital Download on November 8, 2013.

As the press for parody duo Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer’s “The Starving Games” points out, you knew this was coming. And so here it is, the trailer and poster (and some stills) for their upcoming “Hunger Games” parody, “The Starving Games”. Unlike their previous efforts, though, the film will be going mostly straight to VOD with some limited theatrical releases. You know how comedies are supposed to put all, or most of their funniest gags in the trailer to pull in the audience? Well, if these are all of the movie’s funniest gags, they’re kind of in trouble. The Avengers cameo, for instance, wow, that’s kind of painful. Fans of The Hunger Games will be pretty pissed at this one, but I don't think filmmakers Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer (known for quite funny 300 spoof Meet the Spartans and Twilight spanker Vampires Suck, care much. The names of the characters in The Starving Games are quite funny, with Maiara Walsh of TV's Switched at Birth and Zombieland series playing Kantmiss Evershot as opposed to Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen in the super-successful Hunger Games franchise, the second film of which opens on November 22nd via Lionsgate. Hysterically, there's even Hugh Janus and...Jason Statham? I mean hell, there's even Iron Man and Nick Fury in this poster below. Also in the cast are Cody Allen Christian, Brant Daugherty, Ross Wyngaarden, Dean West and Diedrich Bader.

Aaron Seltzer and Jason Friedberg, the filmmakers behind the much maligned film spoofs like "Date Movie," "Disaster Movie" and "Epic Movie," are at it again.
After taking on "300" in "Meet the Spartans" and the "Twilight" franchise in "Vampires Suck," they're now turning their attention towards the "Fast and Furious" franchise with "Superfast".

Lili Mirojnick ("Cloverfield") and Andrea Navedo ("How to Make it in America") have scored the Jordana Brewster and Michele Rodriguez roles, while Daniel Booko will play the Vince-style role Matt Schulze played in the first and fifth 'Furious'.
Peter Safran will produce and filming begins in October in Los Angeles.

From the people who brought you Date Movie, Epic Movie, Disaster Movie, Meet the Spartans, and Vampires Suck... Scared yet? You better be because they’re back with their latest allegedly comedic con job cleverly entitled The Starving Games.
From Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer, the writing-directing duo that are to great comedy what a scorching case of herpes is to great sex, comes The Starving Games, which we first heard about last October and hoped might disappear (no such luck obviously). If you’re familiar with their previous films, then you should pretty much know what to expect here, albeit this one is even cheaper looking than their previous endeavors.
As you can imagine from the title, the bulk of the movie is a spoof of The Hunger Games. That doesn’t mean they didn’t find a way to clumsily work in such other time-stamped pop culture references as Angry Birds,...
