Fun if not hilarious
Of the three operas forming Il Trittico, Gianni Schicchi is my personal favourite. The whole opera is just a riot and I love the music. Of this production of Il Trittico, I put the Gianni Schicchi performance in the middle of the rank, not as good as Il Tabarro(by far the best of the way) but better than Suor Angelica(which I think suffered from an overall disappointing lead performance). It is fun, but I do think there are better productions of Gianni Schicchi around, the 2004 production from Glyndebourne I love especially. I do think the sets are rather drab and old-fashioned- sometimes old-fashioned can be part of a production's charm but here it just looked dated- and excepting the Zita of Elenora Jankovic who does have a lot of character the supporting cast lack vitality for me. However, the comedy does have many moments when it is entertaining, and there is some evidence of nice staging. The musical values are impeccable, with lively orchestral playing and conducted with a sure hand. The singing is wonderful, and the lead performances are great. Juan Pons brings to the table a riotous lead performance, while Cecilia Gasdia is a youthful and beautifully sung Lauretta. Yuri Marusin has a sympathetic-sounding voice, though I think there are Rinuccios out there that give more force to the role than him. Overall, this Gianni Schicchi was fun but it could have been even more. 8/10 Bethany Cox
