Weird Pacing - Needed the extra 10 minutes in the episode
ambertravelsearth4 January 2024
Overall not too bad, but the episode didn't resolve and really ended at a strange spot. What happened to the monster? It feels like there were pieces that needed to be shown that don't have a place in the next episode. At only 33m, it felt like it needed that last 10 minutes to wrap up. I'm not sure what the reasoning is for that.

Annabeth is still kind of hard to understand at times, like she is rushing her lines. Probably just a kid thing and she'll get better as the show progresses. Overall the casting has been superb and the humor is exactly what you'd expect from a show aimed at kids.

The whole episode just felt aimless and disjointed compared to other episodes.

Short Episodes/Poor Pacing Is My Only Gripe
shylaheells4 January 2024
A few different times I had to stop and verify I hadn't accidentally skipped ahead or skipped an episode because where the characters left off in a scene and where they started in a new one was so disjointed. It feels like a lot was cut to accommodate these short episode lengths, and that leaves too much missing information for the viewer. These episodes need to be a bit longer to bring each scene or episode to a close in a way that makes the opening sequence of the next one seamless.

I hope this is an issue that is resolved for the next season because this show has a top notch cast and is too good to be Game of Throned off the air with poor show running decisions. Let the actors act, bro. We don't need that extended end credit sequence.

Apart from that, I am loving this iteration of the story, and hope to see the other related series adapted as well, especially Magnus Chase.

Congrats, guys! You knocked it out of the park. <3.

I wish it was longer!

This episode felt a lot like a classic filler. And yet it was such an important episode to really showcase the relationsip and the perspective the gods have with their children. It was also really beautiful to see Percy's hero building and his growing relationship with annabeth. We never really got to see them together like in the books in the original movies so I'm really looking forward to how they build that.

Moreover, the duality of how loyal annabeth is to her mom and how percy sees his dad is so fascinating. It gives such an honest look at parenting and how we see high powers in the world. I can't believe we're left off at a cliffhanger, quite literally. But introducing percy's powers little by little is really smart because they can use them as twists especially for people who've never read the books or watched the old movies. Although some parts are starting to feel a bit rushed and there are a few changes with the book that i'm noticing. I hope they stay true to the heart of the story and the characters.

weak episode
imizrahi20023 February 2024
It's funny how the feature review criticized the episode...and yet rated it with an eight. Go figure.

Anyways, this episode felt formulaic and like it was just going through the motions to move the story along...and when it began to gain traction, like when it seemed like percy and whatsherface were bonding, it moved on to something else...i hope the rest isn't like this because i was enjoying the first few episodes...i'll, of course, give it another two episodes before i decide whether to continue watching or bail...this was me stretching to make the required characters. How does one speak about something that there was not much to tell about? Ridiculous imposition, the minimum character regulation.

AMAZING EPISODE
svtflower3 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Man!!! Each episode gets better and better. I dont even know how to start this review.

First, we start with percy and sally in the pool and the acting is amazing!! They casted young percy so well. Then, we have a heart to heart between annabeth and percy, and annabeth opens up to him about her family!!! I love the scenes between them so far, chemistry is amazing.

And the comedy in this show is so fun as well, so enjoyable. With grover mocking annabeth whilst hes half asleep hahaha And when we get to the chimera part... boy oh boy does echidna terrify me. Shes a mother alright.

I truly adore how well the trio works together!!! The acting is so good. Annabeth and percy developing a bond , him sacrificing himself for both annabeth and grover... the ending scene correlating with the beginning scene... just so good.

I cant wait for the next episode. Im going to go rewatch episode four right now ahhaha.

Almost the best so Far!
thdoglovr5 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
The Only issue was it was a little too short. I feel as if the episode could have been longer, but that was the only thing that made it 2nd place!

The mother of all monsters was terrifying and I was on the edge of my seat the entire train ride. I thought the Alter of Athena was marvelous and the monster in the bag was crazy. The finale to the episode comes when Percy is hanging off a giant tower for his life, and it ends on a cliff hanger where Poseidon finally helps Percy out. This was the best way to end this episode and I can't wait to see more of it. Grover is growing on me! Love it. It Rules!

Episode was too short!
sdegennaro1310 January 2024
I'm so glad they made this into a series. They are doing a fantastic job but 33 minutes? That is not enough time with these characters and this story. I need more! I do hope they are planning to do more than this one book because these kids are incredible and perfectly cast. I look forward to all the adventures they will have together.

I'm not sure why it won't let me post a review that is this short so I'm going to just keep writing until they say I can post something about this show, it's wonderful cast and this fantastic story. I am waiting for Disney to green light season two. Please please.

Best Episode Yet
arconner7 January 2024
I got to the end of this episode and thought to myself "wow, that was amazing." It wasn't until after the episode I realized it was so short - because I was reading the reviews complaining about the runtime.

And yeah, the episode in hindsight felt short, but in the moment I was so enthralled by the story, the acting, the adventure - and I think that's what a lot of people are missing when they go into each episode.

Watch the recap. Allow yourself to submerse back into Percy's world each week. Have a little excitement going into each episode instead of looking for anything and everything to tear apart, and maybe you'll start enjoying the show for what it is.

It's an adaptation for television, folks. It's not going to be the same as the books. At least it isn't as unfaithful as those gosh awful movies.

If you think about it, this format is a way for Rick to retell his story in a way he sees fit for television.

And yes, it sucks that the episodes aren't longer, and that's something Rick has mentioned (trying to fit a 370 page book into 8 episodes), but they'll never get the chance to be anything longer when y'all keep hating on what they are able to give us right now. They're testing the audience. Maybe show some love and excitement to indicate they have the audience to constitute longer episodes in the future seasons?

Anyways, I loved this episode. Each one gets better and better. Can't wait for the next one!

WERE HERE WERE FINALLY HERE
soyjay3 January 2024
This was a great episode and the first of the series that made me crave for the next one immediately. I'm actually blown away. I'm so glad Riordian is back in this new more age accurate way. Also who else agrees this story was meant to be told episodically instead of film. Great actor for echidna! She scared me and I'm too old for that nonsense. Also BEST PORTRAYAL OF CHIMERA!!!! I think the kids needed a little bit to settle in but now we have better chemistry and better delivery on their lines. I really love this series already and think Walker Scobell is the absolute perfect kid as Percy!! Can't wait to see more 9/10 episode wow.

Straying further from the books and quality.
jed-37719-974844 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Episode 4 firstly cuts our runtime from 40+ minutes to less than 40 minutes. The deviation from source material is becoming ridiculous and absurd especially when it comes to our characters. I could live with the storyline changed and how our story unfolds if the characters were actually true to what they were supposed to be. Percy is a whiny child in the tv show who constantly complains about how unfair the gods are (Specifically his father for not seeing him) leading to an entire dialogue dump for more than half the episode. In the books Percy is supposed to be cunning, sarcastic, witty. The tv show however gives us glimpses of this then reverts to a show clearly made for children rather than it's intended mature audience.

How does it just keep getting better every week?!
rheapathak27 January 2024
This episode hit different for soooo many reasons. Definitely the best one so far-it blew my mind to bits.

Sitting and seeing so many iconic elements come to life from the book, was almost surreal-but if I had to pick the parts that stunned me the most in this episode, it would probably be as followed.

-Echidna: I didn't think it would be possible for one of the monsters in the storyline to be cooler and scarier and more realistic then Medusa was in the previous episode, but Suzzane Cryer just smashed through all of my expectations. She was so sweetly dangerous-it gave me goosebumps. I'm heartbroken that we won't be able to see more of her acting in later episodes.

-Percy getting poisoned: I swear that whole situation had me sitting on the edge of my seat. Especially with how pale he got-it just made the effects of the poison so much noticeable and cinematic. And walker scobell played out being weak and in pain so well!

But apart from just the acting, I really think this was a key part in the story, because for the first time, we get to see the side of Percy, who is more than willing to sacrifice his life to save his friends. And the drama of that scene where he locks himself with Echidna and the Chimera...my heart was POUNDING.

Special mention of the incredible effects of this episode-ESPECIALLY the Chimera...like it looked so realistic!!!!!

And the falling from the arch scene-so dramatic. I loved it so much.

Please keep it up guys!!! U give me something to look forward to every week😆

Percy Looked a Little Pale
e_daneva7 January 2024
I Plunge to My Death is an amazing episode. I have watched all the episodes in this series and all of the episode were really good. Yes, all 4 of them. With an exception of I Become Supreme Lord of the Bathroom ( S1 E2 ), every episode seems to get better in my eyes. Every episode ( besides S1 E2 ) has more heart and more action than the last episode. Even though I liked this episode a lot, I noticed something about one of the characters. That character was Percy. In some scenes Percy looked a bit pale. He had big bags under his eyes, and his face looked slightly white. I don't mean the whole episode, but I mean some scenes near the end. I mean, this stuff happens through. Believe it or not, I got hit in the face with a snowball right today and right now there's a lot of red stuff on my face. Really I wonder why the actor for Percy looked like that. In all though, I give this a 8.8 out of 10.

What happened?
collinunruh3 January 2024
I thought the first two episodes of the show were good but this particular episode was uneventful for no reason; it feels like a filler episode without them committing to writing a new dumb plot for a filler episode and instead choosing to take a section from the book, add in unnecessary new content around that section, and put in a cliff hanger instead of resolving the scene in a way that advances the plot. The dialogue is consistent with the rest of the show and wasn't bad, but hardly touches on new themes. This episode could genuinely been far better if they concluded the monster fight in it. I was saddened by the apparent choice to stretch out the number of episodes in the series instead of crafting well-portioned stories for the episodes.

Major Deviations (Snowballing)
jzsharp-730313 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
After the first three episodes having longer run times, this one felt super rushed. The complete deviation of bringing Echidna into the train and driving them to the Arch for safety undermines the character of Annabeth. In the books, Annabeth is an architectural nerd and drags Percy and Grover there during a stop, not as a means of seeking safety. Furthermore, Athena doesn't rebuke Annabeth and leave her to die in the books. The combination of rewriting the story and the terrible dialogue are preventing the characters from being anything more than one dimensional. We finally see some other emotions from Annabeth, but it still seems forced and strained. Percy remains very whiny and not sarcastic and snippy.

A disappointingly brief episode (wait to watch Ep 4 when Ep 5 is released!)
JabezGill3 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
This episode was short and not munched happened

Summary: 1. Humanity is killing the centaurs... (the magical beasts they can't even see.

2. The Mother of Monsters is after them... 3. Something something, St. Louis Arch, something something hunting buffalo something something isn't humanity the worst?

4. The gods are mad about the Medusa head thing 5. Percy is poisoned but his Dad Moana's the water and saves him.

6. Roll credits.

Biggest set design complaint - they get off the train car and run across the tracks... and it is VERY obvious that the train hasn't moved in a decade... that exact train and track area is used in several Disney shows and films and movies...

Overall, this episode was "33 minutes" which really means it's more like 25-26 with pre and post credits. Nothing really happens, a few conversations but nothing groundbreaking or insightful, nothing we haven't figured out on our own or heard in the first 3 episodes - and like many other reviewers have said... this show insists on telling us about everything instead of showing us.

It's a kids show though, so to some extent I guess they have to handhold the viewer through the story.

Either way, if you're reading this before you watch episode 4 - wait until next week and watch 4 & 5 at the same time because it will probably be more enjoyable & feel like you've actually progressed in the story.

It's like watching a really cheap soap opera.
jeffersonjosedossantos4 January 2024
The fights always only last a few seconds to lower the costs, I get it, but the pace is unbelievable boring: they act like they gonna have 1000+ episodes like a mid afternoon Brazillian soap opera. The showruners seems to lack of ability to make things look interesting or going foward, so the episode feels stuck in the same place.

Most of the episode ais just kids with 0 charisma talking, in monotone, throwing a bunch of infos that most of readers already know, and new watchers don't know why they care.

And they still trying to push some cheap family drama "every family has problems" instead of focusing on what make the books shine: the witty action packed plot.

It's like eating plain bread: there is some value, but is not special by any mean.

Filler episode
ben-2455811 January 2024
Somehow nothing was memorable and there were parts that really should have been, felt more like a filler episode with 0 energy, genuinely more entertained by the Harry Potter map credits than any of this. More of the same issues as before. I wasn't a fan of the first 2 episodes but gosh it's getting worse at least at camp there was some atmosphere and distraction. It tends to be a bad sign when a fan of the book gets a new adaptation and doesn't bother to pause it when the kettle boils. Everyone praised it for being book accurate must be biting their tongue, why they felt the need to alter the reasoning for visiting the arch with no payoff is beyond me it just brings up issues that weren't there before. The monster bit is underwhelming, resolution to it unsatisfying and i felt a bit irritated by the stupid cliffhanger. They seem to be getting shorter runtime too and it's not as if they are packed to begin with.

I Plunge to My Death
Prismark1020 March 2024
This is not quite a mid seasons filler but it is a short episode. On that level it is more action packed but it also comes across as a rehash of an earlier episode.

Percy Jackson, Annabeth and Grover continue their quest as their train arrives to Los Angeles. Once again another entity has boarded the train.

Could it be the train guard who accuses them of wrecking their compartment. Or could it be that helpful woman who is also a tad creepy.

The action scenes were thrilling enough with Echidna. The mother of monsters and her pet, Chimaera in pursuit. Percy Jackson might be out of options.

Percy's rescuer was not much of a surprise. There were small character moments with Annabeth but I am sure this could had been combined with another episode.
