Totoral Media Lab, producers of Chilean docu “Bastard – the Legacy of a Criminal” (“Bastardo – la Herencia de un Genocida”), one of the four non-fiction features participating in Cannes’ Docs in Progress Showcase Chile, has inked a co-production pact at the Marché du Film with Stefilm, Stefano Tealdi’s Italian production house, and Sweden’s Laika Films and TV, represented by Andreas Rocksén and Catalina Donoso.
In addition to the deal, which all but assures its completion, the docu produced by Totoral’s Clara Taricco and Antonia Valenzuela and directed by Pepe Rovano has snagged the Torino Film Lab Audience Design Fund, which aims to implement innovative audience development and outreach strategies at the point of distribution.
Expressing pride for receiving international recognition through the Torino award, Rovano hailed “Bastard’s” “message of reparation and story of injustice and human rights violations.”
“Bastard” follows Rovano as he seeks a biological father he never knew.

When a phone call from out of the blue brings Leo (Joey Millin) back into contact with his sister, Virginia (Madison West), long estranged from her family due to years of drug abuse, he arrives to find her alone in a bare apartment in the midst of an apparent overdose. After the convulsions and nausea subside, Virginia insists to Leo that she has been clean for 8 months due to the help of a mysterious group. She confides to her cynical brother that her edginess and paranoia actually stem from a sinister ritual conducted by the group that took her in at her lowest and eventually revealed themselves to be a cult. Mumbai, Oct 16 (Ians) Actress Shweta Tripathi Sharma feels the popular crime drama Mirzapur has broken her girl-next-door image.
"My main reason to do 'Mirzapur' was that I wanted to be seen as a credible actor more than a cute heroine. The world and the character was so far away, which is what drew me to this show. After 'Haramkhor', in which I played a teenager, I became synonymous with these young cutesy parts. But a performer has to be able to do all sorts of things. I consciously made a choice to do stories and films where I am not playing a soft part," she shared.
In "Mirzapur", she plays the role of Golu Gupta. In the upcoming season, she will be seen as a headstrong girl.

A creative slump, a year-long stint in jail, the seizures, the bitter, prolonged label battle—the ‘10s were a tough decade for Lil Wayne. These trials have little bearing on the direction of his 13th studio album Funeral, in which he eschews introspection and sets out on a mission to bury other rappers across a digressive 24-song tracklist. This album is the work of latter-day Mixtape Weezy, who is eager to treat songs as exercises, to prioritize spectacle over substance, to showcase his technical daring and singular lyrical imagination.

One of the most frustrating aspects of covering festival and indie films has been the limited access for a wider audience – very often review comments run along the lines of: “Tell me where I can see this!” 2015 was a year that finally saw some great shifts in this, with a number of festival films finally getting a theatrical release – some of them films that had been on the festival circuit for a couple of years, some of them hot off the 2015 festival rounds. Audiences for both festival and indie films are small, but they’re growing, and access to this year’s “best of” selection should be easier for interested viewers. 2015 was, indeed, a great year for these films – enjoy our choices for Festival and Indie Bests!

Does love make monsters of men? Or, as Shlok Sharma's debut feature Haraamkhor suggests, does the idea of love merely magnify the monstrous tendencies latent within men? This is one of many complex ideas that weave through Sharma's film, but it is probably the one that will fill the thoughts of viewers as they leave the cinema. Haraamkhor is not an easy story to tell, and there are times where the methods of storytelling and the tonal shifts appear incongruous with the core story. However, when viewed as a whole, rather than the sum of its seemingly disparate parts, Haraamkhor works quite well in communicating opposing truths about the nature of love and what it does to people.Haraamkhor (The Wretched) is the story of Shyam, a...

Nfdc Film Bazaar is introducing a new segment for films in need of gap financing this year. Eighteen projects will be pitched to potential investors to find finishing funds at the first Investor Pitch in Goa this year.
“We learnt that independent films invariably run out of budget at post-production stage. So we thought of organizing a pitching session of such films from Nfdc Recommends section and presenting them to investors, producers and distributors. Here prospective investors can get to watch full films,” says Deepti DCunha, the curator of Investor Pitch.
In order to try out the idea, Nfdc invited selected filmmakers from the Viewing Room section last year for a pitching forum. Filmmakers were asked to showcase the trailers and talk about their films for about five minutes.
One of the filmmakers who pitched his film at the forum last year was Lajwanti director Pushpendra Singh. He met Delhi-based...

Faith Connections (France/India) directed by Pan Nalin will have its World Premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival 2013.
In Faith Connections, Nalin travels to Kumbh Mela, one of the world’s most extraordinary religious events. There, he encounters remarkable men of mind and meditation, some facing an inextricable dilemma; to embrace the world or to renounce it. Faith Connections explores such diverse and moving stories as a young runaway kid, a Sadhu, a mother desperately looking for her lost son, a yogi who is raising an abandoned baby, and an ascetic who keeps his calm by smoking cannabis — all connected by one faith against the spectacular display of devotion.
The documentary has been produced by Gaurav Dhingra (Peddlers, Haraamkhor), Raphael Berdugo (Eros, Caramel) and Virginie Lacombe (Le fils de l’autre, Soongava – Dance of the Orchid).
Pan Nalin, who hails from Gujarat, earlier made Samsara and Valley of Flowers.
