I'm going to review this as "season one" even though, at time of writing, whether or not the show gets a second run hasn't been confirmed.
Tired of playing second fiddle on a show he does all the work for, Alex Horne takes a meeting with Channel four and inexplicably lands himself, and his musical band, a pilot for a live chat show. As he convinces family friend Thora (Desiree Burch) to produce the broadcast, he's undermined by the channel four representatives, executive producer Ash (Georgia Tennant) and intern Lucy (Camille Ucan).
I am again caught with what to say in my review here. On the one hand, the show is a charming and warm, slightly meta experience. It's filled with comedians that I like, given solid earnest performances. The band plays well, and their songs are clever. I like Alex Horne and in a very real sense I 'like' this show.
But it's not funny.
And as it's supposed to be a comedy show that's actually quite a big problem. I must say that the full songs are perhaps the highlight of the run - both it's cleverest and funniest element. The Pea song, which is, I think in the second episode is the funniest element of the whole series. The rest of the time I sat there, with a slight smile on my face, not hating the experience, but not loving it either. I mean, I'd probably do the same for a second season, if one was forthcoming, such is my warmth for Alex and the rest of the team, but if it could be funnier, that would be swell.
