- Iris, a Bosnian immigrant, is arrested on the suspicion of killing a judge for deporting her brother. Vincent insists that Iris is innocent, so trusting his instincts, Cat works behind the scenes to uncover the truth.
- Vincent has moved, just to avoid the insane risk of Cat's surprise visits, especially for the cold case of her mother's murder. Yet he contacts her, to JT's despair, when he notices NYPD detective Wolansky arrests innocent Bosnian illegal immigrant Iris for the murder of judge Hanson, who was about to deport her kid sister. Cath's sister Heather decides against moving out, even enjoys intimate nocturnal company, while Cath promises to get out of her way with the obsessive search for mother's killer. As Vincent feared, it already alerted the genetic manipulation company's henchmen. Still he uses his superpowers to catch the judge's real murderer, lets Cath take the credit and agrees terms to contact him again.—KGF Vissers
- [Daytime, Manhattan, an underground parking garage]
A female law clerk is leaving at the same time as a male judge. They joke with each other as they walk to their cars. Suddenly a car races forward and hits the judge, backs up and runs over him, then speeds away in front of the horrified woman.
[Daytime, New York City, a university quad]
A petite woman is jogging as she looks warily over her shoulder.
[The scene may be intended to be Columbia University Medical Center but is actually Victoria College at the University of Toronto. The building Gate House is part of Burwash Hall. In real life it was the university residence of Donald Sutherland in the 1950s as he studied to be an engineer (before he became an actor), and in the movies it was said to be the inspiration for the 1978 movie "Animal House", also starring Donald Sutherland]
Cat Chandler (Kristin Kreuk) approaches JT Forbes (Austin Basis). He is annoyed that she won't stay away for Vincent's safety. She says she just wants to hear from Vincent and know that he is OK. She can't visit him. She can't call him.
Cat writes out a simple little note and asks him to pass it to Vincent. "Hi. How are you?"
[Cat's Apartment]
She walks in on her sister, Heather (Nicole Gale Anderson), wrapped in a sheet, talking to her boyfriend, who is wearing only boxers. There is a brief awkwardness. Cat tells her it is OK; she is making herself at home. Heather tells Cat to fill out the RSVP to their Dad's wedding and include a plus one. Their Dad worries that Cat is alone in the world.
[The Underground Garage]
Cat meets her partner, Tess Vargas (Nina Lisandrello) at the murder scene of Judge Hanson (Roger Shank), the immigration judge. The hit-and-run car was registered to an Iris Sodkovic (Lara Jean Chorostecki), a waitress at the Club Veraband and a Bosnian immigrant. The Judge just deported her brother three days ago. Two male detectives are to take the lead; Cat and Tess will back them up.
[Daytime, Street scene]
Cat and Tess kneel to examine the bumper of a parked car. There is blood. The two male detectives tell them to just sit tight while the guys go make the arrest. While Cat and Tess wait they spot Iris coming out and they give chase. She runs shouting she has a Green Card. They arrest Iris for the murder of Judge Brian Hanson. She is startled to hear that he is dead.
[Police Precinct]
Cat asks Tess why Iris would be talking about her Green Card if she just murdered a judge? And maybe the driver didn't back up over the judge to kill him. Maybe he wanted to make sure the plates were seen - to frame Iris.
Tess says this is not our case even though we did catch her.
Cat slips into the interrogation room to talk to Iris. She asks her if anyone can verify that Iris was walking home? Iris says evasively she cannot tell.
[Nighttime, New York City]
Cat arrives home to her apartment. It is dark and empty. She hears a noise in the bedroom: a rustling of the blinds. She enters the bedroom with her gun drawn and finds a note. "Catherine: She didn't do it."
[A Dark Warehouse]
Vincent Keller (Jay Ryan) is doing impossibly difficult pull-ups in the dark. JT complains that Catherine and Vincent have decided to keep in touch. Just then Cat shows up. JT throws up his hands and walks away, grumbling to himself.
Cat wants to know why Vincent thinks Iris didn't do it. He says he saw Iris walking the streets at the time of the murder but, of course, he can't come forward as a witness. Cat thanks him for the information and leaves.
[Police Precinct, Forensic Lab]
Evan Marks (Max Brown) is polishing and cleaning to loud music. Cat watches him from the door, smiling. Evan says he is expecting a visit from the examiner. She asks about evidence in the Hanson case. She notices a valet parking stub from the same area as the club where Iris worked.
[Club Veraband]
Cat shows the Judge's picture to Sam (Yani Gellman), the bartender, who remembers him. He gets the Dane (David Richmond-Peck), the owner, who says the Judge was Iris' guy; she worked on him to get a Green Card for her brother.
[Iris' Apartment]
As Cat breaks in, she tells Tess on the phone she thinks Iris didn't do it.
The closet holds a Men's Extra-Large shirt - not Judge Hanson's size. In the back of the closet a hidden door leads to the basement. She hears coughing below and finds two little girls, Iris' sisters, Cena (Emilia McCarthy) and Mila (Martine Campbell).
[Nighttime, under the warehouse fence again]
Cat tries to convince Vincent to treat the sick little girl. There's no risk because the girls are in hiding too. Cat asks if he remembers what it was like, helping people?
[Daytime, the Basement]
Vincent examines the little girl and finds pneumonia. He calls JT to get supplies. Cat is indignant: "You have a phone?" But her eyes show gratitude and admiration.
[The Precinct]
As Cat enters, Evan tells her Iris has already confessed to the hit-and-run. Cat rushes in to talk to her and says she knows Iris didn't do it. Her little sisters were her alibi but Iris can't mention them because they are here illegally. Whoever did it knew that Iris would make the perfect patsy.
The boss, Joe Bishop (Brian White), comes in and orders Cat out of the room. The confession may be in jeopardy now because of her actions. She is suspended and Tess is confined to a desk.
Cat can't mention what she knows about the little sisters.
[Out in the Squad Room]
Tess is irate that Cat dragged her down as well.
[Nighttime, on the streets]
Vincent snatches Cat back into the shadows. She yells that he is lucky they took her gun. Vincent says the girls told him that just before the hit-and-run, a man came to the apartment and got Iris' keys. He had a "knife in his arm". Cat says she is going to the club to look for this guy. Vincent says be careful, she has no gun or partner now.
[The Nightclub]
Cat enters amid loud music and dancers. She sneaks downstairs to the offices and begins to search. Dane catches her and Cat bluffs, allowing him to assume she still has a badge. She says two eye-witnesses say he was the one who took Iris' keys and he denies it. She leaves and he picks up the phone.
[Outside, above the skylight in the rain]
Vincent listens to Dane's call.
[Outside, in the alley in the rain]
Dane comes out for a smoke and Vincent slams him, asking who he was calling. Cat rushes up, upset that Vincent can show up and get involved on his own terms but she can't even call him. She can't figure out how this is supposed to work.
Then she notices a photo on the outside wall of the club that shows Sam, the bartender, with a "dagger" tattoo on his forearm.
She tells Vincent she will take it from here and leaves. Vincent hears the unconscious man's phone beep. He reads a text message that says the problem will be "cleaned up".
Cat apologizes to Tess for treating her as a non-partner. Tess says Cat could ditch her for a week and still be the best partner she ever had.
Cat tells the whole story of the two little girls: smuggled in by Sam, the bartender, who had been brought up on charges by Judge Hanson for smuggling illegals. Then Sam saw Iris cozy up to the Judge and assumed she was giving him up to get favorable treatment for the sisters. Sam decided to kill the Judge and frame Iris.
Suddenly, the two detectives get a notice that Sam's phone location is Iris' apartment. They rush out to protect the girls.
[Iris' Apartment]
Sam enters with gun drawn. He finds the door to the basement but downstairs Vincent jumps him, covers his head and tapes him to a chair.
[Upstairs, in the lobby]
A police assault team is assembled, including Cat and Tess. Cat gives the description of Sam and they rush the apartment but she hangs back when she gets a call.
It is Vincent telling her what he has done for her and she yells we are already here and he needs to get out NOW.
Upstairs in the apartment the police break down the door. Downstairs, Vincent is trapped and he panics.
Cat enters the basement alone and knocks out the bad guy. She pleads with Vincent to calm down and leave the guy alive. If she can prove his guilt, Iris goes free.
Vincent looks hideous and dangerous but Cat cradles his face in her hands and looks into his eyes, calming him.
Finally, she walks the bad guy out leaving Vincent in the basement.
[Joe's Office]
Cat and Tess are hearing the latest. CSU placed Sam in the car, clearing Iris. But much of what Cat did was without warrants. Tess says come on, she broke the case. Joe says what she did was break a lot of rules but in the end, he's glad she did. As punishment she gets only a week's desk duty. Then he smiles and shakes Cat's hand. Well done. Case solved.
Cat walks Iris out. Cat got the sisters political asylum because they are witnesses. Then the two little girls rush in to greet Iris.
Cat gets a call from Evan. His inspection went well.
[Dark streets]
A limo pulls up and a man with a briefcase enters. He is the supposed inspector. He tells the other man that the samples taken from Evan's lab prove that Vincent Keller is very much alive. The other man is the government agent from before: Silverfox (Peter Outerbridge). He says Catherine Chandler is going to bring Vincent right to them.
[Cat's Apartment]
She finds the window open and a note on the floor: "fire escape". Outside, she finds Vincent waiting. He says "I'm fine. How are you?"
They sit and chat about the two little girls and how good it felt to help them.
She says she gets it; in order to be in contact with him, it has to be on his own terms. But she suggests one term: a week can't go by without one of them reaching out to say "I'm still alive."
But, he says, you can't go to my place unless it is a "dire emergency". She asks how will she know what qualifies and he hands her a cell phone and says to call him and ask.
[Back inside at her desk]
Cat fills out the RSVP card to her Dad's wedding and marks only one. Then she calls and leaves her Dad a message. It does not mean she is all alone in the world.
