Dawn Porter’s “Luther: Never Too Much” will open the 31st edition of Hot Docs, which on Tuesday announced its full slate of 168 films — including 120 features — from 64 countries, screening across an array of returning and new programming configurations from April 25 to May 5.
“Luther,” which also launches Hot Docs’ Pop / Life sidebar of films about music and musicians, is a bio-doc about singer Luther Vandross. Warmly received at its Sundance premiere this year, the film “exposes some uneasy truths about the music industry and the media we may now know,” according to Variety’s review.
Excitement around Hot Docs’ official lineup announcement was dampened by the hot revelation Sunday evening on the social media feed of Myrocia Watamaniuk that she and nine other festival programmers had decided as a group “to exit the 2024 Hot Docs Festival.” No specific reasons for the exit were given in the post nor were they forthcoming.

Wednesday’s eventful leap to Princeton University in 1955 also placed Ben in the awkward situation of working alongside Tom, the army man who currently oversees the Quantum Leap project and happens to be dating his ex-fiancé Addison. He wasn’t exactly thrilled about it, but their forced proximity delivered several amusing moments and showcased a different side to the usually optimistic time leaper.

Amy Seimetz wouldn’t say if she was among the many women directors that Marvel reportedly contacted about directing “Black Widow,” the long-awaited spin-off around the sole female superhero from “The Avengers,” but her coy smile gave a lot away.
“I’ve taken meetings on a lot of these things, and then I back away, because I don’t want to get stuck,” she said. “It’s not really my voice, and I think it’s important for women to do commercial movies, but when they do commercial movies, they continue to have a sphere to develop their voice, as opposed to suddenly jumping to a Marvel movie.”
It’s a philosophy that speaks to her unique career trajectory. It was late afternoon at New York’s Bowery Hotel, where the restless 37-year-old was in town from Los Angeles to be honored by Rooftop Films at the nonprofit screening series...

Now right before Nycc we had casting news of Naomi Scott being chosen for the role of the Pink Ranger. Now we were expecting more to follow shortly but it appears Lionsgate will be keeping that a bit closer to the vest. But now they have released more news because now, we have our Red Ranger.
Dacre Montgomery confirmed through Lionsgate's official Instagram this relative newcomer will be be taking on the role of the leader of the Power Rangers team. Now the only credits I can find for him at this time are Family Tree, a pilot from 2011, and Betrand the Terrible a short film. Some might see this as a bad thing but to me it may mean he went in there and blew the audition out of the water. Okay so that 3 or possibly four roles let to announce. Keep it here on Cinelinx for any casting...

Earlier this month, when we learned that Christopher Guest was working on a new mockumentary called Mascots, we figured (we were going to say “guessed” but didn’t want to hear all the groaning) that a good chunk of his regular acting troupe would be part of it. And so it is coming to pass, with Guest veterans Jane Lynch, Parker Posey, John Michael Higgins, Jennifer Coolidge and Bob Balaban all busy making deals to star. Also mentioned in The Hollywood Reporter’s story is Chris O’Dowd, who is in talks to reunite with Guest after starring on his short-lived TV comedy Family Tree. From the sounds of it, fellow regulars Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara might be unavailable as they’re working on Levy’s Canadian comedy show Schitt’s Creek, though we’d figure they’ll make the time if Guest asks, even if it means...

Actor-filmmaker Christopher Guest has revolutionized the "mockumentary" format, satirizing rock spectacle (This Is Spinal Tap), stage musicals (Waiting for Guffman), dog shows (Best in Show) and folk music (A Mighty Wind). For his latest project, he's teamed with Netflix to poke fun at a more obscure topic: the grueling grind of mascot competitions. The streaming service announced Mascots on Tuesday, Deadline reports, teasing the movie with a poster outlining the basic plot.

While Christopher Guest is a familiar face to film fans for his numerous roles, including that of Nigel Tufnel in This Is Spinal Tap and the six-fingered Count Rugen in The Princess Bride, his work behind the camera has been similarly prolific, garnering him critical acclaim throughout his career. Having co-written This is Spinal Tap, Guest made his directorial debut in 1989 with The Big Picture, going on to direct numerous other films, with his last feature, For Your Consideration, coming in 2006. Guest moved to television shortly after, with his series Family Tree running for one season on HBO in 2013, and many fans wondering when he’d return behind the camera. Guest’s next project has now been announced, but it’s also poised to be on a small screen, as his next film will be a Netflix original.

Now Christopher Guest joins the Netflix conga line. Walking his way behind Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, Ricky Gervais, Chelsea Handler, Adam Sandler, the Wachowskis and Mark & Jay Duplass, just to name a few, the mockumentary actor-director has agreed to put Mascots, his first movie since 2006, on the streaming site according to Variety. In the past, the filmmaker already mocked dog shows, home town theater, the movie industry and folk and hair metal music before by making Best in Show, Waiting For Guffman, For Your Consideration, A Mighty Wind and starring in /co-writing This is Spinal Tap, respectively, and with his latest faux documentary Guest takes the piss out of... mascot conventions. The movie, to debut sometime in 2016, takes audiences to the 8th World Mascot Association Championships as men and women compete to bring home the Gold Fluffy Award, the competition's top prize. The premise and concept aren't necessarily as universal...

Christopher Guest will return to the world of mockumentaries for a new Netflix movie.
He is making his first feature film in nine years with the 2016 project Mascots.
Guest's forthcoming comedy will be told in the faux-documentary style within the world of competitive sports mascots.
Netflix describes the project as having "all the drama, intrigue, and occasional excitement of the 8th World Mascot Association Championships, where a group of 'unusual' men and women, with big heads and furry suits, compete to win the prestigious Gold Fluffy Award and be crowned best mascot in the world."
Mascots marks the director's return to the faux-documentary style in a feature for the first time on film since A Mighty Wind.
He more recently used the style on television for Family Tree, which was cancelled by HBO after a single season in 2013.
No word yet if Guest's regular ensemble cast - which includes Jane Lynch,...

It’s been a while since we’ve had a new comedy from Christopher Guest – 2013 TV effort Family Tree only lasted a season and his most recent film was 2006’s For Your Consideration. So we’re happy to learn that Netflix is backing a new movie, announcing that Guest is working on Mascots. Not much is known about the plot or who might be in it, but Netflix’s tweet about the film contains the following basic concept: “Welcome to all the drama, intrigue and occasional excitement of the 8th World Mascot Association Championships, where a group of ‘unusual’ men and women, with big heads and furry suits, compete to win the prestigious Gold Fluffy Award and be crowned best mascot in the world.”It definitely feels like it’ll be along the lines of Best In Show et al, and will hopefully live up to the consistently entertaining standards...

Arrow's Oliver Queen will never have a goatee
We think we can take this as the final word on Green Arrow's traditional chin fluff.
100% no. Never. Our show could go 14 seasons and a goatee will never appear. Hope that clears things up. Forever. https://t.co/pudAfBIhsD

Bryan Singer is a bit of a social media fiend when he's shooting, so we can't pay attention to every picture that goes up.
But we couldn't resist flagging up this impressive set piece, which must be from the titular villain's base in X-Men: Apocalypse or we don't know comics at all.
Is Bendis teasing a second Iron Man series?...

Welcome to the fourth installment of our summer trip through "The Sopranos" season 1. When I revisited early seasons of "The Wire," as well as the whole run of "Deadwood," I did separate versions of each review for newcomers and veterans, but over time realized that the newcomers weren't commenting much, if at all, and that it therefore made sense to simply do one review. Any significant spoilers for episodes beyond the one being reviewed will be contained in a separate section at the end of the review; so long as you avoid that, and the comments, you should be fine. Thoughts on the fourth episode, "Meadowlands," coming up just as soon as I take a five minute cool down period... Dawn Wiener is dead, long live Dawn Wiener! Todd Solondz‘s second feature film, Welcome to the Dollhouse, is hailed as the filmmaker’s big breakthrough — a bold, gross, weird and uncomfortably honest look at one awkward tween’s coming-of-age in nineties New Jersey. The film starred Heather Matarazzo as Dawn “Wiener Dog” Wiener, an outcast desperate to fit in with her bone-headed peers, her terrible family and a classmate who repeatedly attempts to rape her. As is Solondz’s signature, the film is admirable and unique, even if you feel like you need a shower after watching it. The Hollywood Reporter now reports that Solondz is “sort of” working a sequel to the 1995 Sundance Grand Jury Prize-winning feature film, as the filmmaker is currently casting for Wiener-Dog, billed as “an ensemble indie that is tied together thematically by a dachshund.” Moreover, “the script tells several stories featuring people who find their life inspired or changed by...
