Only the Lonely
bobcobb30113 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Not the strongest story, but a fun episode simply for the defending yourself bit. We rarely see it in high-profile cases in real life, but it is almost always fun when they do it on TV.

Mark Feuerstein has played a couple roles on Law and Order and its sister shows, but he did a good job here as an egotistical man with wealth who tried to exploit the system.

A predictable verdict, but nevertheless another fun episode of the show. I think this season is better without Kevin Bernard constantly bringing down the mood, although I know there are some out there that were a fan of his character, not me though.

Don Juan Wannabe Is Like a Ted Bundy
shelbythuylinh15 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Mark Feurerstein who usually plays good guys is cast against type. As a Don Juan wannabe that cons his so called girlfriends out of their wealth and take everything and is so smug and arrogant.

But he also does the best to represent himself in court after firing his lawyer. As he may have looking down a life sentence when one of those girlfriends are murdered there. He is like a Ted Bundy wannabe as well that uses his looks to get what he wants and may have crossed beyond a line.

Both Nolan and Mauron have to get a reluctant witness who has a reputation to protect and that she is a trailblazer for women, on the stand against her will there to see that the serial killer.

As both the trailblazing attorney and the defense suspect also seem to know each other and she is hiding more than she is letting on.

Directed by Elisabeth Rohm

Warning: Spoilers
Law and Order alumna Elisabeth Rohm returns, but this time to direct Only the Lonely. Mark Feuerstein guest stars as the accused, and he's very slick as he becomes a self-represented defendant. I remember first seeing Mark in the early 2000s movie Woman on Top that also starred Penelope Cruz. Anyway, rather ironically this episode, Only the Lonely, kind of deals with the woman on top in many ways legally and socially. Alysia Reiner guest stars as attorney Grace Pollard, and Connie Shi plays Detective Violet Yee.

Anyway, the ending was rather bittersweet and we know that not everyone was going to be happy.

So much wrong,,,,
reasonabledreams6 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
There is so much wrong w/ this, I hardly know where to begin. Years later, seeing this show it's really flawed. But this episode is the worst.

1st casting: This frequently seen actor lacks any physicality to fit a charming ladies man who cons & dominates successful women & He's short, small, narrow shoulders, and so average looking, he should be the assistant manager at the local Burger King or pizza delivery guy. If they can afford him, they can afford a really hit gigolo. At least they'd get what they paid for.

Sam Waterston is 82. No way he'd still be working heading NY DAs office The judge makes ridiculous rulings. You'd think he was a Trump appointed judge at Rittenhouse's trial. But this guy has no political backing.

The best part, is one of his victims making a power statement on stand about fighting for women to be all they can be, including sexually vulnerable humans.

Watching the killer conman prance around, of course representing himself, bec he's so clever & charismstic, trying to appear sincere & innocent is appalling. Doesn't he look in the mirror?

It's really hard to take this show seriously.

Murderer conman Accuses 2 others as the possible killer. This kind of speculation with no evidence, & prosecution doesn't object, or judge doesn't stop him. And he says, ots nor my jib to find the murder, it's his, the prosecutor. Actually it's the detectives job to find the murder. No one objects.

Slightly Not as Awful as the Other Ones in the Reboot
bkkaz18 November 2022
Derp Donovan and Lurch do some derpy and lurchy investigating, bland as usual. Camryn Manhands lumbers out of her office. The severe looking computer tech glowers along severely.

Speaking of Manhands, I keep waiting for her to say something like, "It won't make the slightest difference to me, Derp, but the consequences to you and Lurch will be devastating. In your mind, I'll be dead, and with no one to guide you out, you'll be stuck here in permanent psychosis. The walls of reality will come crashing down around you."

By the way, the time from opening to the first five-minute batch of commercials was five minutes. That includes the opening credits sequence. So, five minutes of show, five minutes of commercials. Then, four minutes of show followed by a four-minute commercial interruption. I you thought the advertising is getting worse and more annoying, you're absolutely right. This choppy pattern runs through the whole "hour." It's just one of the reasons the stories on these new Law and Order shows are so thin. That and the terrible writing.

This is yet another episode featuring tech millionaire types. Apparently on Law and Order, regular people no longer commit crimes. There are some Asian suspects -- the severe looking computer tech added suspiciously quickly after the show's been criticized for a significant lack of Asian American diversity notwithstanding, Law and Order continues it's shameful track record of a lack of positive Asian American representation.? Shame on you, Dicky Wolf, shame on you!

With the constant interruptions, there's no rhythm to the stories anymore and certainly no character development. It's like buying the can of tuna at the supermarket and finding it only half filled and then mostly with water. Just not as derpy and lurchy.

AOC gets a girls moment lamenting her lack of a relationship while Manhands has to butt in and prove someone would marry her. There's also more SVU infection, with yet another reminder about champions of sex crimes and the like.

The beady, wall-eyed villain represents himself in court. For some reason, the Garden Gnome sees this as some kind of threat, though given the general lack of the Gnome's legal prowess, I suppose that's to be expected. He spends a lot of time in court with his hands folded and glowering at the guy.

I am starting to warm up to AOC more, though. She's beginning to project some warmth, and the writers are giving her more to do than spout clumsy expository dialogue. It's a shame the writing is so poor, as she could have been a good ADA in the older version of Law and Order. They should have cast her as the main ADA and let the Garden Gnome get her coffee. Sam Waterston's DA doesn't seem to work anymore. All the conversations with him -- and they're starting to be actual conversations -- are while he's heading for an elevator. As far as drama goes, this is getting tiresome, though Waterston's constant effort to escape the reboot seems more than sensible.

Lastly, are all the judges now just members of the production crew? None of them seem to have the gravitas or depth of character as they were in the old show. They just seem like somebody in a robe who can barely act. The judge in tonight's case might have been better cast as Bob, the guy who resupplies the vending machines. His female predecessor earlier in the episode is not much better, coming across as a snippy department store manager.
