Pretty Well Crafted
Hitchcoc7 July 2023
I feel for the reviewer. For nearly a century, script writers have messed around with perfectly good names and plot lines. The recent Louise Penny series is an example of what a mess can be made. Still, for those of us who are not readers of this series (I've read numerous books by Michael Connely but not this series) it works as a nicely crafted lawyer/police drama. It also has a resolution in the first regular episode. We don't have to wade through ten weeks to finally get some answers (although I don't know what's down the line). The sociopath who threatens Michael is a prototype but works well here. Elliot Gould is very good in his advlise and I appreciate that it was kept from us until after things were resolved. Of course, there is a good narrative hook to finish things off. I enjoyed this although I certainly sympathize with other criticism. Oh, and I don't think that the money in Connelly's wallet is in any danger of being depleted.

Very anticlimactic

Warning: Spoilers
I'm binge watching the show and so far I like it but I was disappointed by the way the story with the man with the tattoo ended. When he broke into Mickey's house and we found out who he was it seems like he was a very clever psychopath. I was looking forward to watching Mickey and him battle and Mickey eventually outsmart him but they ended this story in about five minutes. It was very anticlimactic. So as it turned out he wasn't clever at all, he was just being stupid. I get that as a defense lawyer Mickey has dealt with dangerous people before but this murderer was clearly threatening him and his family. I don't know about the legal side of things. I always thought that if there's a conflict of interest the lawyer has to go with his first client but I guess in a situation like this he has no choice but to drop the first guy. It was just solve too fast and way too easy for my liking. I was expecting this guy to be more of a threat especially considering it was so hard to find him. I don't know if it's the same as the storyline in the books and I don't mind watching short legal stories among the main one but I had high hopes for this storyline and I didn't feel like it paid off.

Really?

Warning: Spoilers
This turn of events takes things back to the original story of the film "The Lincoln Lawyer", with the victim of the murder in that story, but her name was Donna Renteria. Now, for the readers of the Mickey Haller novels we have the poor Jesus Menedez character being charged again with the murder for which his conviction was overturned back when his name was Jesus Martinez.

They had to change the names of Martinez and Renteria because the story wouldn't happen with Jesus' conviction being overturned by the conviction of Louis Roulet. Jesus couldn't be charged again with that murder because someone else had been convicted of it, so the names of the victim and the falsely convicted man had to be changed a little so there would be a story there.

That works for viewers who haven't read the novels of seen the film on which the series is based, but not for those of us who remember the novel and its film version. I'm feeling a little cheated here. I also feel some sympathy for Michael Connelly who now has to see his character further assaulted by this series screenplay. I only hope that Michael got paid again for this series.
