A sign of a classic movie is that it still holds up well against subsequent remakes\reimagining. “The Boxer from Shantung” to the best of my knowledge has been reworked at least twice in “Hero” by Corey Yuen and more recently as “Once Upon a Time in Shanghai”. To it's credit the original holds its own and, in many respects, remains the superior entity despite the evolution of action cinematography and film technique.

With plenty of genre efforts already made, it would seem very few original ideas are left in the ground to unearth for zombie films yet the concept of mixing together ‘The Raid: Redemption’ with ‘Fight Club’ is certainly an intriguing mixture. Nowhere near as unique or creative as it could’ve been but still highly enjoyable nonetheless, this mashup from emerging Taiwanese genre director Joe Chien has a lot to like due to that.
Arriving at an ordinary apartment building, police officer Andy and his team, Captain Ma and Li Wei find the rumors are true in that they’ve been unleashed into a zombie outbreak. Trying to fight their way through the horde of zombies inside, several other survivors Jenny and David also manage to stay alive inside the building and together fight their way to safety, only to see several years later that the zombie...

I’m gonna be totally honest: when I found out about this movie, I got excited. Two crusaders in the 12th century ending up in China, kicking all kinds of butt: that sounded like my kind of movie. Next to that, I was surprised to see Hayden Christensen (of course known for playing Anakin Skywalker in the Star Wars Prequels) back on the screen, especially in this kind of setting. And Nicolas Cage looked pretty bad-ass in the stills I came across. Then I found out that Andy On (Once upon a time in Shanghai) was in the mix as well as the bad guy! Wow, this might actually turn out to be something pretty cool.

A festival the likes of Fantasia is not to be tread lightly. For a variety of evident reasons it is a behemoth of an event, lasting far longer than the vast majority of other movie festivals and offering a slew of genre features and shorts ranging from lighter fair some may deem to be mainstream to supremely hard core, provocateur material. As with any event of similar ilk, not everything showcased earns the passing grade. Quite the contrary in fact; when 150 or more motion pictures are shown to the public, at least some are guaranteed to be utter tosh if not downright risible. Swimming through the ocean of bad, decent and good movies for a three-week period will invariably result in one stumbling upon some standout efforts. Below are five that won me over easily, sometimes in rather shocking ways.

Montreal’s genre festival ran from July 17-Aug 6 and saw audiences of more than 129,000; its Frontières co-production market also drew a record attendance, up 30% on 2013.
With more than 129,000 people attending screenings and events over its 18th year, Fantasia International Film Festival co-director Mitch Davis (pictured) has marked the event as an “extraordinary” year.
Speaking to Screen, Davis was particularly pleased that the smaller films shone through.
“We showcased just over 160 feature films, which is more than our norm and is, frankly, no subtle number,” said Davis. “The worry in doing that is the chancing that certain so-called smaller films could somehow fall between the cracks.
“I’m thrilled to say that this didn’t happen. It’s often the smaller independent discovery titles that we have some of the strongest love for and we go the extra mile to make sure they stand out and even then, anything could happen. Happily, a good...

Once Upon a Time in Shanghai
Directed by Ching-Po Wong
Written by Jing Wong
China & Hong Kong, 2014
Inspired by the Shaw brothers classic Boxer from Shantung, Once Upon a Time in Shanghai is an exceptional action film with the right doses of heart and humour. Set in 1930s Shanghai, the film is about the arrival of country boy with incredible talent in martial arts and his rise within the local criminal party. Though not rife with originality, the film packs a punch thanks to the charisma of the leads and the impressive choreography.
Visually, the film evokes a throwback to a bygone era. Though not shot in black and white, the film adopts an extremely low saturation to evoke a sort of faded nostalgia. This works best in the film’s action sequences, allowing the actor’s movements through space come to the forefront. Black and white within the action...

The Wong Ching Po directed, Yuen Woo Ping choreographed martial arts film Once Upon A Time In Shanghai is rapidly approaching its theatrical release in Chinese speaking territories and that means the arrival of the proper theatrical teaser and trailer. And that means Philip Ng, Andy On and Sammo Hung throwing down old school style.Yeah, this is a throwback in the right way - a period set exhibition of fighting skills featuring a bunch of guys who can really, really fight all under the watchful eye of one of the better young directors in the area. The story is as basic as it comes - Ng plays a laborer just trying to make a living in Shanghai who ends up relying on his fighting skills...

The long wait is over, we finally have an official trailer for the upcoming kung fu flick Once Upon A Time In Shanghai. The movie stars kung fu legend Sammo Hung, Andy On and Phillip Ng and is choreographed by Yuen Woo Ping.
The movie is a Shaw Brothers release which i am very excited about and i have high expectations about this with some good action in the trailer. The way the action has been shot, it reminds me a little of Ip Man, so if its anything like that, were in for a great movie.
Synopsis: In the early 20th century, labourers from all over the country were rushing to thr flourishing city of Shanghai. Ma Yongzhen (Philip Ng), a youthful man from Shangdong, arrived at this prosperous city working as a dock labourer. He moves to Shanghai in the hope of becoming rich. But...

Distribution Workshop posted a couple of new images on their Facebook page today from Wong Jing's upcoming crime epic The Last Tycoon (previously known as Once Upon A Time In Shanghai), featuring impressively stately poses from Chow Yun Fat and, if I'm not mistaken, a pretty old-looking Huang Xiaoming. From these images it appears that Wong is pitching for a similar aesthetic to Johnnie To's underworld hit Election or even Wilson Yip's Ip Man, albeit with a 1920s setting. The film, written and directed by Wong and produced by Andrew Lau, recreates the true misadventures of Shanghai mobster Du Yuesheng (Chow), who had close ties with Kmt leader Chiang Kai Shek. The production boasts an impressive cast that stars Chow and Huang alongside Francis Ng, Sammo...

For those of you keeping score at home. This is not the Once Upon A Time In Shanghai starring Chow Yun-fat and Sammo Hung, and directed by Wong Jing. This is, however, another Once Upon A Time In Shanghai also starring Sammo Hung with Philip Ng [Bodyguards and Assassins and Naked Soldier], and produced by Wong Jing.Someone at Jing's Mega Vision Pictures is not keeping track of film titles. This movie will be directed by Wong Ching Po [Revenge: A Love Story] and was chosen by Wong Jing because "...his visual style is very unique and I want him to bring a new visual element to kung-fu fighting". On top of that he brings in action director and legend Yuen Woo Ping to handle the choreography. So colour...
