The song that is played when Ben first jumps Mr. Sandman has other time travel connections. In Back to the Future (1985) when Marty Mcfly gets to the town he lives in circa 1955 the song is playing.
Dr. Sam Beckett also leaped into a mental hospital as a patient in the original Quantum Leap (1989) episode Shock Theater - October 3, 1954 (1991), which is the same year as this episode. But Sam was in Pennsylvania and Ben is in Georgia.
When Dr. Mueller was asking Ben who the President was he guessed JFK (John F. Kennedy). Later Mueller almost does a lobotomy on Judith the woman that Ben needs to save. In real life JFK had a sister named Rosemary who had a botched lobotomy in 1941. Their father arranged it and didn't even tell their mom until it was over.
In this episode, Addison worries that Ben won't fit in the air ducts because of the size of his host. In the prior series Sam was physically there, while the host or leapee was in a waiting room . The Most notable example of this is in Nowhere to Run - August 10, 1968 (1992) when he leaps into a double amputee and stands up, creating the illusion of someone floating in the area. It according to quantum Leap writer/director/cast member Shakina Nayfack, there is no longer a waiting room and it seems Ben is inhabiting his hosts body. Where Ben's body is is unclear.
The episode title., "Ben, Interrupted", seems to be a variation of the film title Girl, Interrupted (1999), starring Winona Ryder and Angelina Jolie, which was about life in a women's mental healthcare facility.
