- Ben Leaps into the body of Dr. Alexandra Tomkinson, in Seattle 1994, who is helping bring in people from a fire. One woman is going into labor, and her doctor can't get there so Ben helps her delver. The woman delivers successfully.
The next day, Addison meets Ben in the locker room. He tells her that he helped deliver a baby. She confirms who he is, a first-year resident. A woman comes in, talking to her ex on her phone about their son Mas, and Addison confirms that the woman is Dr. Sandra Turk, a third-year resident who is Ben's mentor and is going through a custody battle. Sandra points out that Ben's shift ended an hour ago, and Ben explains that he got roped into delivering a baby. Sandra tells him to go home and get some rest, and he can't save everyone. After she leaves, Addison tells Ben that he's there to save three people.
Ben goes to the registration desk and asks Nurse Carolina where the three patients--Kimberly Cole, Eli Jackson, and Louis Tann--are. Carolina can't find them in the system, and Addison tells Ben that they're supposed to be there, just as they come in as victims from train crash. Ben and the other staff, including Sandra, triage them.
Ben helps Sandra with one victim, and confirms from her ID that she's Cole. One of the doctors, Harper, tells Sandra to give Cole Respiratrex, a surgical anesthetic, and Sandra hesitates and then tells Harper isn't a problem. Ben notices and tells Addison about Sandra' hesitation. Addison confirms that the drug has side effects, and the hospital was one of the five incentivized to use it. Sandra tells Ben that Cole's chances are 50/50, and she'd be more confident if Harper had prescribed a more proven anesthetic. Ben changes Harper's prescription, and Sandra warns Ben that if could end his career if Harper finds out.
Addison confirms with Ziggy that there's an 85% chance Tompkins loses her job if Ben gets caught, and Ben hopes he can save the three lives without ruining Tompkins in the process.
In 2023, Magic questions Janis at the Project. He points out that they both want to bring Ben home, and they should work together. Janis wants her freedom in return for her knowledge, and Magic takes her manacles off. She says that she'll tell Magic what she knows one she talks to Ben.
Carolina tells Ben that one of the patients he asked about, Eli Jackson, came in with a brain tumor. Ben tells Jackson that it's a good thing he came in because they spotted the tumor and can treat it. Jackson wants Ben to discharge him, and the last five years have been lonely without his wife, who passed away. Ben tries to convince him that he still has something to live for, while Sandra secretly listens at the door. She comes in and addresses Jackson by his name, and Jackson confirms that he's Sandra's father.
Sandra and Ben get a page about more crash victims. Once Sandra leaves, Jackson tells Ben not to tell her about the tumor because he doesn't want his daughter to know. Ben agrees as long as Jackson stays there until he comes back. Out in the hallway, Ben tells Addison about Jackson and she confirms that Jackson's refusal to seek treatment meant he died because the tumor metastasized, and Ben has to change his mind.
Ben finds Sandra treating Tann, who is okay but wants to know where his wife is and she was on the train with him. Sandra calls Ben over, and he sees that Tann has a metal piece in his forehead. Sandra talks to Ben and tells him that the ORs are all taken and they'll have to remote the metal there. Addison tells Ben that in the original history, Sandra nicked an artery and Tann died on the spot. Sandra says that Ben should talk to Tann and keep him calm and distracted.
Ben talks to Tann, who says that he and his wife got separated in the crash. Ben tells him to focus on the good news until they know for sure, and Tann calms down. Once Tann does, Ben gets him to talk about how he met his wife. Tann does so and Ben talks about how he and his fiancé met, much to Sandra's confusion. Ben and Tann continue talking, and they both say that they'd be lost without their significant others. Sandra successfully removes the metal, and Addison congratulates Ben on saving one of the three lives he's there to save.
Jenn gets Janis some drinks, and says that it's a peace offering for what happened in Belize. They continue drinking and Jenn says that Richard Martinez addressed Ben by name. Janis says that if Martinez recognized Ben, there's an order. She shuts up and Jenn wonders what she means, but Janis refuses to say anything more. When Jenn figures that Janis doesn't trust anyone there, Janis says that there's one person besides Ben that she'll talk to.
Ben prints out files about Jackson and Sandra finds him. She says that Ben should find a way to make the patient go to Oncology without knowing who the patient is. Sandra admits that she and her father aren't on the best terms, and when he was younger, her father was a lawyer who defended corporations against chemical spills and sexual harassment charges. He never had time for his family, and his bad example is what drove Sandra to become a lawyer. Sandra says that they could never reconcile.
Harper comes in and says that someone changed his prescription. Ben immediately says that he did, and says that the drug Harper prescribed has a risk of side effects. Harper says that the drug is FDA approved, and Cole doesn't have preexisting condition. Addison appears and tells Ben that Cole has an undiagnosed case of muscular dystrophy, and Ben tells Harper. Harper asks Sandra if she agrees with Ben, and she freezes up. He says that they're going to continue the drug, and afterward they're going to have a talk about Ben's future at the hospital.
Once Harper leaves, Sandra defends her not pushing back. She says that Harper is the board's lackey and they're in the pocket of the pharmaceutical companies that are backing the drug. There's nothing they can do to change things, and Sandra refuses to risk her career in the middle of a high-cost custody battle for her son.
Once Sandra leaves to take another call from her ex, Addison reports that Ziggy says that hundreds of people will die from Respiratrex, and Ben has to get Harper to stop using it. The one doctor who could change Harper's mind is afraid of losing her family. Ben gets an idea and goes to talk to Jackson.
Ben finds Jackson preparing to check out. Jackson says that he wasn't the best person or father, and Jackson hurt a lot of people during his career. He figures the cancer is the universes way of paying him back for what he's done. Ben suggests that it's the universe's way of giving Jackson a way to make up for what he's done. He says that Sandra has a chance to save people from a dangerous drug, but she can't do it alone and needs her father's help.
Ben goes out in the hall and Addison tells him that Tann's wife Jeanne has just been pronounced brain dead. Since Sandra and all the other doctors are busy, Ben is going to have to tell Tann. Ben wonders how he can destroy Tann's life, and Addison says that she once had to tell a mother that her son died on a mission Addison led. Addison told the mother that her son was a hero, making the world a better place, and Addison told her the truth from wherever the truth comes from.
Ben tells Tran what happened, and Addison looks on as Tran breaks into tears.
Later, Ben tells Sandra that her father has agreed to take up the fight against the hospital board to stop the use of Respiratrex. Sandra says that she never asked Ben to do that, and insists that some wounds never heal. She says that it's too late for them to make things up between them, and they get a Code Blue that Cole is dying. They go to her room, and the nurse confirms that Cole is dying. Sandra has Ben defibrillate Cole, who revives. Sandra figures that Cole needs a heart transplant, and Addison checks the donor registry.
Sandra asks Ben what's going on, and Ben tells Sandra that her father has a tumor in the brain. Ben insists that Jackson needs a treatment, but he won't get it because he needs hope and they both know that only Sandra can give it to him.
Jenn meets with Magic, who blames himself for whatever happens next. He figures that Janis they're best chance of learning what happens next.
Addison checks in with Ben, and tells him that she and Ian checked the registry for 1994, and they found that the best donor won't be dead for three months. Ben figures that he and Cole are completely screwed, and throws papers from his desk in frustration. Addison tells Ben not to give up, and he was send there to find the connection between the three people. Ben has an idea. He goes to Tran and says that there's no chance of her coming out of her brain-dead state, and Cole needs Jeanne's heart. Tran admits that he doesn't know if he's ready to let go, and Ben tells him that what happened to all of them on the train wasn't fair. Bu if Jeanne could speak, she wouldn't want anyone else to die. Tran finally agrees, kisses his wife on the forehead, and Ben and Addison take each other's hands as best they can.
Addison confirms that Cole's chance of survival just plummeted. She tells Ben that the doctor doing the operation was delayed, so Harper scrubbed in, prescribed Respiratrex on Cole, and she died. Ben finds Sandra and says that he needs her help to save Cole's life. They go run the OR and Sandra tells Harper to stop, and Respiratrex is dangerous. Ben tells Harper that he's risking a major malpractice suit, Harper says that the hospital needs the sponsorship, and Sandra says that as doctors they've sworn to do no harm. Exposure to Respiratrex triggered Cole's muscular dystrophy and caused irreparable damage to her heart, and a second dose could kill her. Harper still doesn't believe it, and they show him the chart and Ben says that Cole's life is in Harper's hands.
Harper changes his prescription and goes on with the transplant, and Sandra congratulates Ben as he goes. Out in the hallway, Addison tells Ben that in the new timeline, Harper suspends the use of Respiratrex and other hospital follows his example, and the FDA discontinues the use of the drug. Ben thanks Sandra for backing him, and Sandra says that seeing Jackson alone convinced her that she finally understood how sad and lonely being a parent and losing one's child could be. Sandra figures Jackson doesn't deserve to die alone, and she'll convince him to seek treatment.
That night, Ben tells Addison hat doctors are heroes. She tells him that he's also a hero for all the lives he's changed and Ben tells her that there's still one life he's concerned about. Ben wonders if it was all for nothing and he let Addison down. She says that she can save herself, and she knows she won't be alone and she'll have Ben, just as he as there for everyone else. Because of that, Addison isn't afraid and Ben shouldn't be, either. With that, Ben Leaps.
Addison goes to see Janis as Janis requested, and Janis tells her that she wasn't thrilled that Ben came to her instead of Addison. She isn't sympathetic to their ignorance, and wants Ben to stop talking to Addison and has to keep anything he remembers to himself. Janis wants the team to stop doubting Ben, and there's a good reason he didn't tell them anything. The only place he can keep the information he has secret is in his mind. Once he says something out loud in a world with a Quantum Accelerator, everyone knows, including the people who sent Martinez. If Addison wants to help Ben, she needs to tell him to trust no one, even Addison.
Ben finds himself in an elevator, wearing a military uniform. His entourage takes him to a nuclear reactor.
