Sketches by Armando
owen-watts4 August 2021
This curious 2012 special features Armando wandering around aimlessly waxing lyrical about his particular love for Charles Dickens - like half a meandering outtake from his surreal deadpan channel 4 series mixed with a strange out-of-control segment from the culture show. It's quite an idiosyncratic dash through the author and his life and works and Armando spends quite a lot of the time in his characteristically dry mode. Chuck in a couple of comedians, lawyers and strange British people and you have a fascinating little curio of a doc - made even more meaningful by preceding his own adaptation of Copperfield by eight years or so. I was a deep fan of Iannucci in my youth - and in my adulthood I'm becoming quite fond of Dickens - so in a way this doc (or his film, rather) serves as the gateway between those two worlds.
