The Halo games have been a staple in the gaming industry since its debut in 2001 as “Halo: Combat Evolved.” Developed by Bungie and published by Microsoft, the game quickly gained a massive following and spawned numerous sequels and spin-offs.
The game’s success was so great that it soon made its way to the big screen with adaptations from the origin story of the game such as “Halo: Nightfall,” “Halo: Forward Unto Dawn,” and most recently, the upcoming Paramount+ series, “Halo.” The compelling storylines and outstanding performances from actors in these on-screen adaptations have received critical acclaim.

Hollywood is no stranger to video games, but if last week’s E3 was any indication, the worlds of gaming, television and film are becoming closer than ever before.
Major companies such as Apple and Netflix clearly see promise in the video game market, as they both had a presence at the industry’s Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles. Netflix showcased a “Stranger Things” game that will drop on July 4, the same day as Season 3 of that show premieres on the streaming platform, and in 2020 they will release a free-to-play mobile game based on the show.
The platform also will be getting a film based on popular shooter “The Division” starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Jessica Chastain and in the fall, Netflix’s upcoming “The Dark Crystal” series will get a video game tie-in. If these kinds of intellectual property-based games are successful, it’s likely that Netflix and its...

Justin Lin is a busy guy. Since leaving the Fast and Furious franchise (which he basically saved from a future of direct-to-dvd sequels and turned into one of the world's most bankable film series), he's directed Star Trek Beyond and lined up tons of other opportunities, ranging from Space Jam 2 with LeBron James to a Hot Wheels movie for Legendary. Now he's adding one more project to his plate: a digital series reboot of the 1980s TV series Knight Rider.
We received a press release explaining how Lin is teaming up with Machinima, his company Yomyomf, and NBCUniversal to bring this project to life. He'll produce the digital series with Yomyomf, and it's intended to launch sometime in 2017. Machinima's CEO said this in a statement:
"Knight Rider is an iconic franchise whose concepts of AI and autonomous vehicles were science fiction in the 1980s and are now science fact.

For several years now, two of the most financially successful film franchises have been the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Michael Bay’s Transformers series. Those films have cumulatively earned $10.2 billion and $3.8 billion, respectively. So one can’t really blame the folks over at Mattel and Dolphin Entertainment for hoping to combine the superhero storytelling of the former with the built-in appeal of a long-running toy line. Unfortunately, Max Steel reveals just how ill-conceived this approach is in telling an effective story.
Based on the Mattel toys (as well as the 2000 and 2013 animated series they inspired), the film stars Ben Winchell as Max McGrath, a teenage boy who soon begins experiencing dangerous energy bursts when he and his mother (Maria Bello) move back to his hometown, where tragedy occurred years earlier. Before long, the truth begins to unravel, and Max encounters a bizarre creature named Steel (voiced by Silicon Valley‘s...

Open Road Films and Mattel have released the first domestic trailer for their upcoming live-action adaptation of Max Steel. The movie is based on Mattle's action figure line and animated series from the late '90s/early 2000s. This latest trailer is a lot better than the last international trailer that was released about a week ago. That thing was a mess, but this one is cut together so much better. You actually get a sense of what is going on and what the film is about. That being said, I'm still not sold on Max Steel. That first trailer left a bad taste in my mouth. I need to see more.
I have hope that it will be good, though, mostly because the script was written by Christopher Yost. He is the screenwriter of films such as Hulk Vs., Thor: The Dark World, and Thor: Ragnarok. I've also enjoyed his work on X-Men: Evolution,...

"Protect him. He's the only thing that matters." Originally scheduled for release in 2015, this latest sci-fi toy adaptation is now arriving in theaters October 2016. The first international trailer from Japan has arrived online for the Max Steel movie, about the adventures of teenager Max McGrath, played by Ben Winchell, and his alien companion Steel. The film also features Josh Brener, Ana Villafane, Andy Garcia, Maria Bello and Mike Doyle. Since this trailer isn't cut for Us audiences, it seems a bit jittery, jumping right into the action and showing some of the more sci-fi heavy scenes without much context. It looks like he merges with this alien thing to become "Max Steel", and must fight off the bad guys after them. Doesn't look so bad. Here's the first international trailer for Stewart Hendler's Max Steel movie, found on YouTube: Max Steel is directed by Stewart Hendler (Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn...

If The Lego Movie, Transformers and G.I. Joe just isn't enough toy based movies for your kids to enjoy, then you're probably in the mood for Max Steel. The first photos from the film based on the toy and animated series of the same name have arrived showing off Ben Winchell as Max McGrath, a teenage boy who learns he has hidden powers that when combined with an extraterrestrial friend named Steel, (see, it's the title!) produce the universe's most powerful energy. Andy Garcia and Maria Bello also star in the film, because everyone needs a paycheck. This looks pretty cheesy, and likely just for kids, but they don't really make films like this just for the young ones anymore, so maybe it'll be fun for them. Photos below! The Good Wife star, Mike Colter, is set to take on a lead role in the Ridley Scott-produced digital Halo film for Xbox Entertainment.
The film is expected to follow the same format as Machinima's web-series, Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn. The Wrap reports that the story is set in the 26th century, and it centers on a surgically-enhanced super soldier who is Not Master Chief.
Colter will play a character named Marlowe, "a rising star in a futuristic army who is troubled by aspects of the military industrial complex he inhabits. Approaching combat situations with caution and logic, he inspires loyalty in his fellow Spartans."
The script for the feature was written by Prison Break creator, Paul Scheuring. It's also expected to premiere before the end of the year. Just so you know, this is a completely different Halo project than the TV series that Steven Spielberg is currently developing.

Xbox One and Xbox 360 will introduce original TV content in early 2014, Microsoft has announced.
Microsoft TV executive Nancy Tellem told Variety that original programming would be added by the second quarter of 2014 at the latest.
"We're hoping we will be able to put something up in the first quarter, at minimum second quarter," Tellem revealed.
The former CBS executive said that progress on TV shows had been slower than anticipated, but the wait would be worth it.
"We aren't Netflix, we aren't Amazon, we're a different animal," Tellem continued.
"We're neither or we're a little like them. It all depends. The lack of black and white and 'this is the template' and 'this is what we're following' is very difficult. As we continue to do deals everyone's going to get more comfortable."

I don’t know if I’m completely floored by this news or was subconsciously expecting it all along. Either way, Steven Spielberg is producing a live-action series set in the Halo video game universe. Part of my confusion is from my immense appreciation and distrust for Spielberg, who has directed some of my all time favorite films, but on the flipside has produced absolute crap like the Transformers movies and that one TV show that was supposed to be about Broadway musicals but was instead about anything and everything else at times. In a way I expect the best from Spielberg, but sometimes the things he producers are just disappointments.
“But this is Halo we’re talking about,” some of you will no doubt say, as if that were some universal recipe for a work of art. Yes, Halo, as a video game, is phenomenal. But you know what else?...

The Xbox announced its new console today. Among other announcements came the news that a legendary director is stepping in to help create content for the new system. Steven Spielberg will create a live action Halo series which will be available on the Xbox One. Spielberg will create the series in tandem with 343 Industries, the studio that also produced last year's smash hit web series Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn. "I'm thrilled to announce a live-action partnership with 343 Industries and one of the best storytellers of all time: Mr. Steven Spielberg," said 343 Industries Gm Bonnie Ross. Spielberg is not the first renowned director attached to a Halo project. A feature film based on the franchise has been attached, over the past decade, to filmmakers like Guillermo del Toro, Peter Jackson, and Neill Blomkamp. Spielberg, however, plans to complete the project. "For me, the Halo universe is an amazing opportunity to...

Machinima Prime's biggest hits have all been based on existing properties. One after another, series like Mortal Kombat: Legacy, Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn, and Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome have left their mark on the channel's young, predominantly-male audience. Looking to branch out, Machinima Prime has released its first sci-fi series not based on an existing property. It's called Omega, and it caters to the same gaming-savvy crowd as the channel's other releases. Though Omega is not based off of a video game series, it might as well be; its main characters are a group of heavily armored alpha men and a token woman who, instead of military garb, wears a tastelessly low-cut tank top. The plot revolves around an alien invasion, but the aliens also have the capacity to turn humans into zombies, allowing Omega to hit multiple pop genres at once. See for yourself by checking...

He won’t direct any of these short films but will be a hands-on executive producer with Rsa president Jules Daly. With Machinima, they will select directing clients of Rsa and figure out what stories to tell. "Machinima has provided a strong springboard for genre content on the web. The network distributed Mortal Kombat: Legacy, which revived the moribund Mortal Kombat franchise. It started with a short film and is now in its second season and led to a feature film in development. Since the birth of YouTube in 2005, the platform that hosts Everything, including actors, artists and comedians — has spread like wildfire, launching careers and shining a spotlight on many outstanding talents beyond that dog on the skateboard. Eight years later, rather than being a springboard for these creatives to move to TV or labels, the Internet has become another medium for them to showcase their work. The third annual Streamy Awards will honor that work this Sunday.
Chris Hardwick, comedian and host of The Talking Dead on AMC, will host the show. He is an advocate for the global, niche audiences online shows reach.
