Heart of Gold: Bonus
Cruising with the Players (2006)
*** (out of 4)
Throughout the rehearsal period for NEIL YOUNG: HEART OF GOLD, director Jonathan Demme would take the band members out into a car and just drive around Nashville so that he could film their thoughts on Neil Young, the album and the eventual concert. Grant Boatwright, Spooner Oldham, Ben Keith, Emmylou Harris, Gary Piggs, Diana DeWitt, Chad Cromwell and Rich Rosas are among the artists interviewed as they share stories about working with Young, preparing to do songs that have never been performed live and of course talking about the album itself. Once again, fans of the film and especially Neil Young are going to enjoy this 11-minute piece because it really gives you a good idea of how this project came together. The artists talk about getting the call from Young and how at first he didn't have any songs written but overtime everything would eventually come together. Boatwright tells a good story about meeting Young and selling him a guitar that Hank Williams had played. Harris talks about Young's experiments and how he is pretty much his own genre. Keith talks about how Young is constantly going all out no matter what he's doing or playing. There's certainly nothing Earth-shattering here but fans of Young should enjoy this look at the album and concert.
